A groundspeed check at your first checkpoint tells you whether your flight plan is still true. By comparing the actual time it took to reach that checkpoint against your planned time, you can calculate your real groundspeed, recompute your ETA, and catch a fuel-eating headwind while you still have every option available. The flight plan you build on the ground is an educated guess; the first checkpoint is where you turn that guess into a fact.

Why Your Flight Plan Is Only a Guess Until You Verify It

You planned the whole cross-country: winds aloft, nav log, fuel burn, the complete sheet. But the airplane doesn’t care what you wrote down, and neither does the wind.

The winds aloft forecast is exactly that - a forecast, issued for a large block of sky and a wide window of time. The actual wind at your altitude, right now, can be stronger, from a different direction, or both. It very often is.

Your nav log is not a decoration. It is a hypothesis, and your first checkpoint is the experiment that tests it.

Where Should Your First Checkpoint Be?

Your first checkpoint matters more than any other point on the route, so choose it carefully during planning.

You want it far enough out that you’ve had time to climb, level off, set cruise power, and settle down - but close enough that you find out early if something is wrong. For most trainers, 10 to 15 nautical miles off departure is about right.

Make it unmistakable. Pick a big lake, a town with a highway junction, or a river bend where two rivers meet. Avoid a lone water tower that looks like every other water tower in the county. The moment you see it, you should be certain that this is the spot.

How Do I Run a Groundspeed Check at My Checkpoint?

Here is a worked example using round numbers. Say you planned a 120-nautical-mile trip, forecast a wind out of the west at 20 knots, and cruise at a true airspeed of 110 knots. Your nav log says the first checkpoint, 18 nautical miles out, should take 10 minutes.

Follow these steps:

  1. Note the actual time the moment you cross your departure fix - the real clock time, not the plan.
  2. Fly your heading, settle into cruise, and watch for the checkpoint.
  3. Positively identify the checkpoint the instant you reach it.
  4. Compare actual time to planned time. Suppose it actually took 12 minutes instead of 10.

That extra two minutes is not a rounding error - it’s the airplane telling you the wind is stronger or more on the nose than forecast. Twelve minutes instead of ten is 20% slower than planned, and over 120 miles that compounds into real time and real fuel.

Now compute groundspeed: distance divided by time. 18 nautical miles in 12 minutes.

The Mental Math Trick for Groundspeed

You don’t need to be a mathematician. Twelve minutes is one-fifth of an hour, so multiply the distance by five: 18 × 5 = 90 knots. Your actual groundspeed is 90 knots, not the 110 you planned in still air - and now you know it for a fact, because the airplane just measured it for you.

The same trick works for any clean fraction of an hour:

  • 6 minutes → multiply distance by 10
  • 10 minutes → multiply by 6
  • 12 minutes → multiply by 5
  • 15 minutes → multiply by 4

When you plan, try to place your checkpoint near one of those times to make the math almost free. When the numbers are ugly, your E6B - round or electronic - gives you groundspeed in about three seconds. There’s no shame in using the tool. An examiner won’t dock you for using an E6B; they’ll dock you for not knowing your groundspeed at all.

How Do I Recompute My ETA After a Groundspeed Check?

Now use that real groundspeed. You have about 100 nautical miles left. At 90 knots, that’s a little over an hour - call it 1 hour and 7 minutes for the rest of the trip.

Add that to the time you’ve already flown, and you have a new, real ETA - built on what the airplane is actually doing today, not what the forecast hoped for this morning. This is what separates flying the plan from flying the airplane.

Why a Headwind Is Quietly a Fuel Problem

This is where the groundspeed check stops being a navigation exercise and becomes a safety decision. Your fuel plan was built on your planned groundspeed. If you’re going slower, you’re spending more time in the air, and time in the air is fuel out of the tanks.

Work it through: you planned 1 hour 5 minutes, but the groundspeed check now points to about 1 hour 20 minutes - 15 extra minutes you didn’t plan for. At 8 to 9 gallons per hour, that’s a little over 2 gallons you didn’t budget.

Two gallons sounds trivial with full tanks, but you won’t land with full tanks - you’ll land near the bottom of your plan. FAR 91.151 requires day VFR flights to plan to arrive with at least 30 minutes of fuel in reserve at normal cruise. A headwind eating your groundspeed is also quietly eating that reserve.

The first checkpoint is the earliest possible warning that your fuel plan needs a second look - not over the destination, when your options are gone. Early, you can slow down and lean for range, pick a closer alternate, plan a fuel stop, or turn around. Every one of those doors is wide open at the first checkpoint, and they start closing with every mile after it. The value of the information is highest when you have the most options - and you have the most options early.

What If I’m Faster Than Planned?

Sometimes the tailwind is your friend. Say the plan called for 10 minutes and you cross the checkpoint in 8 minutes. Great - the trip will be quicker and you’ll land with more fuel than expected.

Do the check anyway. Knowing your real groundspeed still gives you an accurate arrival time, which matters if you’re beating weather, beating sunset, or calling whoever’s picking you up. And confirming the plan is working is its own kind of comfort. Confidence in the cockpit comes from information, not from hoping.

The Three-Question Scan for Every Checkpoint

Build this into a habit at every checkpoint, not just the first:

  1. Where am I? Positively identify the checkpoint and confirm your position.
  2. How am I doing on time and speed? Note the actual time, compare to the plan, and if the picture has changed, redo your groundspeed and your estimate to the next point.
  3. How am I doing on fuel? Check the tanks, check your burn against the clock, and answer honestly: am I still going to land with my reserve intact?

Once you’ve practiced it, this scan takes about 30 seconds and turns your nav log into a living tool that works for you the whole flight.

What the Checkride Examiner Wants to See

The Airman Certification Standards (ACS) for the private pilot cross-country tasks are explicit. The examiner wants to see you navigate by pilotage and dead reckoning, identify checkpoints, and verify position, groundspeed, and ETA - and they specifically want to see you correct your ETA and fuel plan when actual conditions differ from the plan.

The ACS assumes conditions will differ. It isn’t testing whether your plan was perfect; it’s testing whether you noticed it wasn’t and did something about it.

So on the checkride, say it out loud. Point at the ground, name the feature, note the time, and tell the examiner your groundspeed and what it means for your arrival and your fuel. That’s exactly the evidence they’re looking for.

Four Real-World Tips That Make This Work

  • Pick unmissable checkpoints and space them sensibly. On a 100-plus-mile trip, you need a handful of solid ones roughly every 10 to 20 miles, not one every three miles. Too many and you’re heads-down; too few and you drift a long way before catching a problem.
  • Note your times consistently. Whether you run a stopwatch or write the actual clock time at each fix, pick one method and stick with it. Writing the actual clock time is reliable - the clock doesn’t lie, and you can’t forget to start it.
  • Do the easy math first, reach for the E6B second. Clean minutes get you a groundspeed in two seconds and free your eyes to keep flying. Save the flight computer for ugly numbers or precise fuel figures.
  • Decide ahead of time what would make you change the plan. Before takeoff, ask: if I reach my first checkpoint way behind, what’s my move? Where’s my nearest fuel and my alternate? Rehearse it on the ground and it’s not a crisis in the air - it’s a decision you already made.

Good cross-country planning isn’t predicting the future. It’s preparing for the version of it that actually shows up. The pilots who stay safe, legal, and ahead of the airplane keep asking, all flight long: is my plan still true? The first checkpoint is where you find out for the first time - and where fixing it costs you the least.
