The go-around is not a backup plan - it is the plan. Every approach that goes unstabilized below 500 feet AGL should result in an immediate go-around, no debate. Understanding that principle, and the execution behind it, is one of the most critical skills a pilot can develop.

Why Do Pilots Resist Going Around?

The resistance is psychological, not logical - which is exactly what makes it dangerous.

The runway is visually compelling. When the numbers on the concrete are getting larger, the brain instinctively says “land.” Overriding that instinct requires deliberate training.

Social pressure compounds the problem. Nobody wants to look like they couldn’t stick the landing - whether an instructor is watching from the ramp, a passenger is in the right seat, or another aircraft is in the pattern. That ego is a hazard.

Go-around execution is also genuinely demanding, particularly on a hot day at a high-elevation airport. Some pilots unconsciously avoid them because the workload is higher than it appears from the outside.

And there is the time cost: fuel burned, another lap around the pattern, the inconvenience of doing it all again. That inconvenience is worth it every single time, without exception.

What Does a Stabilized Approach Actually Mean?

“Stabilized approach” is used frequently in training but rarely defined precisely enough to produce consistent behavior.

In a typical training aircraft - a Cessna 172 or Piper Cherokee - a stabilized approach on a visual requires four conditions to be simultaneously true by 500 feet AGL:

  1. On speed. The POH gives a target approach speed; in most light singles, that’s 60 to 70 knots on final depending on weight and configuration. At the gate, you should be within 5 knots of that number.
  2. Correct configuration. Flaps as specified, gear down on retractables, checklist complete.
  3. Stable descent rate. In most light trainers, 400 to 500 feet per minute. Not 1,000. Not 200.
  4. On centerline. Not chasing it - on it.

If any one of those four conditions is not met at the gate, the answer is automatic: go around.

Where Is the Go-Around Decision Point?

500 feet AGL is the gate. That is the line.

The gate exists because it provides time. Below 500 feet, you are committed. Above it, you still have options. Every correction made inside 500 feet consumes energy, attention, and altitude that you need for the flare - and corrections cascade. Fix one thing, something else goes out of tolerance, and suddenly you are at 100 feet addressing two problems at once with no room for error.

Students often push back: “But I had time to fix it.” Maybe. But that reasoning requires correctly assessing your margin, your correction rate, and the cascading effects of each input - simultaneously, under pressure, close to the ground. The gate eliminates that calculation entirely. Unstabilized at 500 feet means going around. The decision is made before the moment arrives.

How Do You Execute a Go-Around Correctly?

The FAA Airman Certification Standards (ACS) require you to recognize when a go-around is necessary, execute it promptly, establish the correct climb attitude, apply full power, configure the aircraft, and track the extended centerline - all in sequence, under pressure, with the ground close.

Here is the order that works:

1. Make the decision and say it out loud. “Going around.” Those two words commit you mentally and communicate clearly in a dual situation. Don’t skip this step.

2. Apply full power and pitch simultaneously. In a Cessna 172, that means pitching to approximately a 10-degree nose-up attitude to establish the climb. Power and pitch together - not one, then the other.

3. Confirm a positive rate of climb before retracting flaps. Reducing flaps reduces lift momentarily. If the airplane is barely climbing and you pull the flaps up all at once, you can settle back down. Confirm you’re actually climbing first.

4. Retract flaps incrementally. In a Cessna 172: full power, pitch for climb, carb heat to cold, then flaps up one notch at a time. Allow the aircraft to accelerate between each notch. Do not rush this step.

5. Establish climb speed. Target best rate of climb (Vy) in most situations. If there is an obstacle ahead, use best angle (Vx) until clear.

6. Communicate. On a tower-controlled field, advise ATC. At a non-towered field, make a CTAF announcement: “Cessna Two Four Seven Alpha Bravo, going around runway two eight.” Short and clear.

7. Plan the pattern. You are climbing from near the runway surface. Decide immediately: tight pattern, or extend the downwind to give yourself a longer, better-set-up final? Don’t climb without a picture of where you are going.

What Is the Examiner Looking for on a Checkride?

During a go-around on the private pilot practical test, the examiner is evaluating five things:

  • Timely recognition. Did you catch the unstabilized approach early, or did you wait until you were on the numbers?
  • Immediate action. No hesitation, no attempt to salvage the approach - just the decision and the execution.
  • Correct procedure. Power and pitch together, flaps up incrementally, carb heat managed correctly.
  • Aircraft control throughout. Directional control, no excessive bank, tracking the extended centerline during the climb.
  • Situational awareness in the pattern. Where are you going? What is your traffic picture? What is your plan for the next approach?

The go-around is not mechanically complex. The ACS does not require anything extreme. What the examiner is really evaluating is decision-making and habits under mild pressure - habits that form from the very first time you execute one without overthinking it.

How Does Density Altitude Affect Go-Around Performance?

Go-around performance is not constant, and the difference can be significant.

A Cessna 172 on a cool sea-level morning with one person aboard and light fuel will climb away from a go-around with a comfortable margin. That same airplane on a hot afternoon in August at a 4,000-foot-elevation airport with four occupants and full fuel is a fundamentally different situation. Power margin is smaller, climb rate is lower, and speed margins are tighter.

In high-density-altitude conditions, flap retraction must be especially precise - the airplane cannot absorb a momentary loss of lift at the wrong moment. Before every flight, calculate your density altitude and check your actual expected climb performance in the POH charts. If you are operating near the margins, the 500-foot gate is a hard stop, not a guideline. Less buffer demands more discipline, not less.

How Do You Build and Maintain Go-Around Proficiency?

Go-around proficiency erodes faster than landing proficiency. Pilots who regularly fly touch-and-goes develop comfortable landing mechanics while letting go-around habits atrophy. Then the one time they actually need one, the mechanics are rusty and the decision-making is slow.

Build go-arounds into every currency session deliberately. Before departing, set a personal rule: if any of the four stabilization criteria is not met at 500 feet AGL, the go-around is automatic. No debate. Practice the commitment, not just the mechanics.

Periodically, practice a go-around from very low altitude - down near the flare - then apply full power and climb out. Feel what the airplane does at low airspeed with full flaps and full power close to the ground. That is the muscle memory you need when real conditions put it to the test.

Why This Matters: The NTSB Data

Approach and landing accidents are consistently among the most common accident categories in general aviation, according to the NTSB accident database. In a significant portion of those accidents, the approach was not stabilized and the pilot chose to continue anyway.

You are allowed to go around. You are allowed to go around twice. You are allowed to divert to an alternate if conditions are giving you trouble all day. None of that is failure. That is the decision a competent pilot makes before the situation forces one.

The goal is not to land. The goal is to land safely. Those are not the same goal.
