The technique is straightforward once you understand the aerodynamics - and your examiner expects you to understand both.
What Actually Happens During a Forward Slip?
In normal coordinated flight, the airplane’s nose points in the same direction it’s traveling. The fuselage cuts cleanly through the air, drag is minimized, and everything is in balance.
A forward slip deliberately breaks that relationship. You lower one wing and apply opposite rudder simultaneously. The longitudinal axis - the line from spinner to tail - now points off to the side of your actual flight path. The fuselage is presenting itself sideways to the relative wind.
When a fuselage hits moving air sideways, drag increases dramatically. That increased drag lets the airplane descend at a steeper angle without gaining airspeed. You’re converting altitude directly into drag, not speed - which means you arrive over the threshold without a pile of excess energy to burn off.

Enter early. Recognizing you’re high at a thousand feet above your intended approach altitude gives you room to work. Recognizing it at three hundred feet is a significantly harder position.
Choose your direction based on which side keeps the runway most visible. If you lower the left wing, the runway will appear through the left side of the windscreen.
Lower the wing to between 15 and 30 degrees of bank, depending on how much altitude you need to lose and how quickly. Apply opposite rudder firmly enough to prevent the airplane from turning - the rudder holds the nose from following the bank.
