In a forward slip, that image is gone. The nose points somewhere off to the side, and your brain correlates that with being wrong.

Students who struggle with slips react by reducing inputs. The bank gets shallower. The rudder comes back toward center. The slip flattens, descent rate decreases, and not enough altitude is lost.

The drill that builds the picture: Go up to altitude with your instructor on a good day. Establish yourself on a simulated final approach toward a point on the ground. Does Stall Speed Change in a Forward Slip?

In a forward slip, the effective angle of attack is slightly higher than in coordinated flight at the same indicated airspeed, because the airflow over the wings is disturbed by the sideways fuselage position. This does not make slips stall-prone, but it does mean you should not fly them at the low edge of your approach speed.

The FAA Airplane Flying Handbook recommends maintaining normal approach speed or slightly above when slipping to a landing. If your normal approach speed is 65 knots, do not slip at 62 knots. Give yourself a few knots of margin. The drag from the slip handles your descent rate - let the speed stay comfortable.

How Do I Exit a Forward Slip Correctly?

Release aileron and rudder inputs smoothly and simultaneously, letting the nose swing back to the centerline at a controlled rate. As the nose returns, transition to your normal final approach sight picture for the flare. Time the exit so that you are in coordinated flight by the time you reach your flare initiation point.

When Is a Forward Slip Most Useful?

The classic scenario: you are on final, approximately 300 feet too high, the threshold is sitting below your intended glidepath, and you are eating up distance you cannot afford to waste. A forward slip can put you back on glidepath in seconds.

The most critical application, though, is the off-field emergency landing. If an engine fails and you need to put the airplane down in a field or clearing, your glide path may not cooperate. You may be set up correctly at 500 feet and realize you have too much altitude and too little field ahead. That is a terrible moment to discover your slips are not solid.

The forward slip in an off-field emergency does exactly what it does on a runway: it increases descent rate without increasing airspeed. You are still flying the airplane, still in control of where it goes, but you can change your descent profile significantly in the time it takes to apply the inputs.
