The Fighter That Shocked the RAF
When the Fw 190 first appeared over the English Channel in September 1941, the RAF’s front-line squadrons did not know what they were facing. The Spitfire Mk V was Britain’s best fighter at the time - the refined product of Reginald Mitchell’s genius - and it was suddenly, unmistakably second-rate.
The new German fighter could outclimb the Spitfire Mk V at low and medium altitudes. It could outroll it at virtually any speed. In a dive it pulled away cleanly. In level flight it was faster - not marginally, but decisively. Pilots filing reports were asked whether they might be confusing the new aircraft with a modified Messerschmitt 109. They were not.

He thought about what an aircraft actually felt like to fly in combat, in bad weather, from rough forward airstrips. He thought about the mechanic maintaining the engine in a frozen field in Russia.
Tank wanted to build around the BMW 801, a large air-cooled radial engine the Germans had developed but no one had successfully integrated into a first-line fighter. The conventional wisdom said radials meant drag - a wide frontal area penalized speed and performance. Tank believed he could engineer around it: a precisely contoured cowling, a cooling fan built into the design from the start, and an airframe so clean around the engine that the drag penalty became manageable.

Kurt Tank’s Legacy
Tank survived the war and emigrated to Argentina, where he contributed to the development of the Pulqui II jet fighter. He later worked in India. He died in Germany in September 1983.
He never received the same recognition as Mitchell or Hawker. But he built an aircraft that many serious aviation historians consider the finest all-around fighter of the Second World War - and pilots with warbird hours who have flown the Fw 190 still describe the cockpit visibility, roll response, and handling qualities in terms that would have pleased him.
