What Is the Five P Check?

The Five P check comes straight out of the FAA’s work on single-pilot resource management and appears in the Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge. The premise is simple: when you’re the only pilot up front, you’re also the dispatcher, the flight attendant, the mechanic’s last set of eyes, and the meteorologist.

Nobody is going to tap you on the shoulder and ask whether you’ve thought about something. You have to build that habit yourself, and the five buckets give you a structure to do it.

The five buckets are Plan, Plane, Pilot, Passengers, and Programming. They all start with the letter P, which makes them easy to recall when your brain is busy.

The key difference between this and a preflight checklist is repetition. You don’t run the Five P check once and call it done - you run it at decision points throughout the flight, each time asking: is anything different now than when I planned this?

When Do I Run the Five P Check?

The FAA suggests five decision points during a flight. Think of each as a brief pause to step back and reassess:

  2. Before you take the runway
  3. At the top of climb, when you level off
  4. Before you begin your descent
  5. Before you enter the traffic pattern at your destination

The whole check takes about ten seconds at each point. You might fly a hundred hours and have every check come back green - and that’s fine. You’re not hunting for a problem; you’re building the habit so that on the one flight where something has quietly changed, you’re the pilot who notices it early.

The Plan: Is My Flight Plan Still True?

The Plan is the big picture: your route, weather, fuel, timing, terrain, and airspace - everything you worked out the night before.

Here’s the trap. The plan you made last night is not the flight you’re actually flying today. Weather is a living thing, and the forecast you briefed at 6 a.m. has already drifted by the time you launch at 9. So the question at each checkpoint isn’t did I make a plan - it’s is my plan still true?

Consider a real scenario. You planned a two-hour flight with a tailwind, but the winds aloft are backwards from the forecast and you now have a headwind. That two-hour flight is looking like two hours and thirty-five minutes.

If you catch that at your top-of-climb check, you have time to add a fuel stop and make it a calm, boring decision. Miss it, and you might not notice until you’re staring at a fuel gauge you don’t like over terrain you don’t want to be over. The tool moves your decisions earlier, when you still have options.

The Plane: Is the Airplane Doing Its Job?

The Plane is the machine - fuel state, oil temperature and pressure, the electrical system, avionics, and any equipment your plan depends on. On an instrument flight, it’s also where you confirm the airplane is legal and capable for what’s ahead.

Your engine instruments are not decoration. On a long, smooth leg, scan them on a schedule rather than glancing only when something feels wrong. By the time something feels wrong, the story is already halfway written. A cylinder head temperature that’s been creeping up for twenty minutes is trying to tell you something.

The buckets also talk to each other. Say your alternator light flickers, then recovers, and the airplane keeps flying fine. Before descent, you run the Plane and remember your destination is forecast to go marginal - and you might need every bit of your electrical system for an approach. That flicker suddenly changes the whole calculus. That’s the Five P working the way it’s supposed to.

The Pilot: How Sharp Am I Right Now?

The Pilot bucket is about you, and it’s the one pilots skip because it’s uncomfortable to look in the mirror in the cockpit.

You’ve likely heard of the I’M SAFE checklist - Illness, Medication, Stress, Alcohol, Fatigue, Eating. That’s your Pilot check in a nutshell, but it isn’t just a ground item you knock out before launch. Fatigue at hour one is a very different animal than fatigue at hour four. Stress before takeoff is not the stress you feel after forty minutes of dodging buildups with tired hands on the yoke.

So when you hit the Pilot bucket at top of descent, ask honestly: Am I still ahead of the airplane, or starting to fall behind? The descent and approach is where workload spikes, and it’s exactly when a tired, task-saturated pilot starts dropping things.

Recognizing that before you’re in it lets you slow everything down. Ask for delaying vectors. Request a hold. Nobody ever crashed from taking one more lap in the hold to get their head straight.

The Passengers: Who’s Nudging My Judgment?

Passengers are a resource and a risk at the same time - and no, solo pilots don’t get to skip this one.

On the resource side, a passenger can hold the chart, run the handheld, spot traffic, and read you the checklist. Use them.

On the risk side, passengers create pressure, and that’s where scenario-based decision making goes sideways. You promised your buddy you’d have him home by dinner. Your family is waiting at the destination. Now you’re looking at a line of weather and negotiating with yourself instead of making a clean go/no-go. That’s a version of get-there-itis, and it has killed a lot of capable pilots.

The Passenger check is where you name that pressure in your own head: I am feeling pushed to make this work. Now that I’ve named it, I’ll decide on the merits, not on the promise.

If you’re flying solo, the Passenger check flips into a question about the people on the ground: Who’s waiting on me, and are they nudging my judgment without even being here?

The Programming: Am I Ahead of the Automation?

Programming is your avionics - GPS, autopilot, electronic flight instruments, and the tablet running your moving map. This P is the newest, and it matters more every year.

The automation is fantastic right up until it does something you didn’t expect, and then it becomes the most dangerous thing in the airplane. Not because it fails, but because you spend the next ninety seconds heads down, poking at buttons, trying to figure out why the airplane turned the wrong way - while nobody is flying and nobody is looking outside.

The Programming check is where you get ahead of that. Before your descent, load and brief the approach while you still have time, altitude, and brainpower. Set up the boxes when it’s calm, not when you’re hit with a runway change on short final.

And the golden rule underneath all of it: aviate, navigate, communicate. If the automation ever confuses you, don’t debug it. Click it off, hand-fly the airplane, and sort out the magic later. The airplane doesn’t care why the autopilot got weird - it just needs somebody to fly it.

How the Five P Check Works in a Real Flight

Picture a late-afternoon flight home. VFR, good day, two hours planned.

Before engine start, you run the Five P. Plan is solid, weather’s good at both ends. Plane is fueled and airworthy. Pilot - you slept fine and feel sharp. Passengers - your spouse is aboard and happy to spot traffic. Programming - the GPS has your route loaded. Green across the board. You go.

At top of climb, you level off and run it again. The tailwind you counted on isn’t there; in fact you’ve got a light headwind, and a broken layer is building to the west that wasn’t in the morning forecast. Everything else checks fine, but you file that one Plan change away and start watching the western sky.

Before descent, you run it a third time. That broken layer has organized into something with rain under it, drifting toward your destination. Plan says your VFR arrival might turn marginal. Pilot - you notice you’re more tense and your workload is up. Passenger - your spouse asks if you’re still okay, and you feel the tug of not wanting to disappoint, so you name it. Programming - you pull up the weather at a good alternate still sitting in clear air behind you.

None of this is an emergency. But because you ran the check, you’re not surprised. So when the tower reports the field just went below VFR minimums, you don’t panic and you don’t press. You calmly divert to the alternate you already looked at, land in good weather, and wait forty minutes for the cell to pass before finishing the trip.

That is scenario-based decision making done right - not one heroic call at the last second, but a series of small, early, boring decisions that kept the last-second call from ever having to happen.

Why the Five P Check Matters for Your Checkride

Aeronautical decision making is the part of flying that’s hard to put a price on or a number in the logbook. You can drill steep turns until they’re perfect, but judgment gets built one flight and one honest self-check at a time.

The Airman Certification Standards call this out directly - risk management and single-pilot resource management are threaded through the whole thing. On your checkride, the examiner wants you to identify hazards, assess the risk, and manage it out loud. The Five P check gives you the structure to do exactly that, and if you run it during training flights, it’ll be second nature by the time a Designated Pilot Examiner is sitting next to you.
