What Was the Fairey Swordfish?

Designed in the early 1930s, the Swordfish was already considered obsolescent by British procurement analysts when the Second World War began in September 1939. Its single Bristol Pegasus radial engine produced approximately 750 horsepower. Maximum speed, fully loaded, was around 138 mph - less than half the 300-plus mph of the Hurricane and Spitfire entering service simultaneously.

The three-man crew - pilot, observer, and telegraphist air gunner - sat in open positions with no canopy and no enclosure. At altitude over the North Atlantic in winter, the cold was severe and unrelenting.

The Royal Navy called it the Swordfish. The crews called it the Stringbag.

That nickname came from affection, not mockery. A string bag holds whatever you stuff into it, and so did the Swordfish. It carried torpedoes, bombs, mines, depth charges, and later in the war, rockets and radar pods - configurable for nearly any mission the Fleet Air Arm needed. It was also genuinely forgiving to fly. Its slow stall speed mattered enormously when putting an aircraft back on a carrier deck in a North Atlantic swell at night. The Bristol Pegasus was tough enough that you could shoot holes through it and it would often keep running.

The Royal Navy knew it needed a replacement and ordered one. In autumn 1940, the Swordfish was what they had.

Operation Judgment: The Night Attack on Taranto

Why the Italian Fleet Had to Go

By autumn 1940, Mussolini’s Italy had been at war since June. The Regia Marina held a commanding position at the center of the Mediterranean with six battleships in commission, plus dozens of cruisers and destroyers. This force threatened British supply lines to Malta and Egypt and potentially the entire North African campaign. Admiral Andrew Cunningham, commanding the British Mediterranean Fleet, needed to change the arithmetic.

Solving the Shallow-Water Problem

Rear Admiral Lumley Lyster had been developing the concept of carrier air attack for years. The plan called for a night torpedo strike against the Italian fleet in harbor at Taranto - night specifically, because Italian anti-aircraft batteries would have been devastating in daylight.

The harbor presented a technical problem. Taranto was shallow - fourteen to seventeen fathoms in the anchorage areas. A standard air-launched torpedo dives on water entry before finding its running depth; in shallow water, it hits the bottom before leveling out. British ordnance teams fitted special wooden fairings to control the entry angle and set the weapons to run at just over 25 feet. None of this had been tested against real ships in a real harbor. The math said it should work.

Reconnaissance flights through the autumn mapped the harbor in detail: battleship anchorages, anti-torpedo net positions, balloon tether points, gun battery locations. The operation was named Judgment and assigned to HMS Illustrious and her Swordfish squadrons.

The Strike

On the evening of November 11, 1940, HMS Illustrious turned into the wind off the Greek coast. Twenty-one Swordfish were prepared in two waves. Small disasters then unfolded, as they always do before combat operations - a fuel leak here, a mechanical problem there. By the time both waves were airborne, numbers were below the original plan.

The first wave of twelve aircraft, led by Lieutenant Commander Kenneth Williamson, crossed the Italian coast and descended toward Taranto harbor just before 11 p.m. Barrage balloons were up. Guns were manned. Searchlights swept the approaches. Anti-aircraft tracer arced across the darkness in streaming lines. Through all of it, the Swordfish came in at fifty feet above the water, threading between balloon cables that could tear a wing off without warning.

Williamson put a torpedo into the Conte di Cavour, a battleship commissioned in 1915. It hit. The Conte di Cavour settled to the harbor bottom and was never returned to effective service. Other torpedo aircraft followed through the fire. Two hits on the Littorio, one of Italy’s newest and most powerful battleships. One hit on the Caio Duilio. Dive bombers attacked oil storage and cruisers in the inner harbor.

Williamson was shot down on the way out. He and his observer were pulled from the water by Italian sailors and spent the rest of the war as prisoners. He learned what he had accomplished from his captors.

What Taranto Cost and What It Won

Two aircraft lost out of twenty-one launched. Against a defended fleet harbor at night. In exchange, the Italian fleet lost roughly half its effective battle strength in a single evening.

The Italians withdrew their surviving battleships to Naples. Malta’s supply lines held. The balance of naval power in the Mediterranean shifted in ways that mattered for the duration of the North African campaign.

How Taranto Shaped the Attack on Pearl Harbor

In Tokyo, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto was reading the intelligence reports from Taranto. He had been developing a concept of his own: a carrier strike against the American Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor. He had been studying shallow-water torpedo attacks and night operations. After Taranto, he had a proven case study. Japanese planners examined the British approach in detail.

Thirteen months after Taranto, on the morning of December 7, 1941, 353 Japanese aircraft launched from six carriers and struck Pearl Harbor. The torpedoes ran shallow. The tactics were recognizable.

Twenty-one Swordfish biplanes had not just won an engagement in an Italian harbor. They had demonstrated that the era of the battleship as the supreme naval weapon was ending, and that the aircraft carrier was the new arbiter of sea power. Taranto was one of the moments where that truth became undeniable.

The Bismarck: May 1941

The Crisis

In May 1941, the German battleship Bismarck broke out into the Atlantic with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen. In the Denmark Strait, Bismarck found HMS Hood - the pride of the British fleet, the ship that represented British naval power to the world. Hood took a catastrophic hit in the after magazine. The ship broke apart and sank in roughly three minutes. 1,418 men were lost. Three survived.

The Royal Navy put every available ship to sea in pursuit. Bismarck had been damaged in the Denmark Strait engagement and was leaking fuel, but she was still making speed toward the French coast. If she reached Brest, she could repair, refit, and sail again.

The First Strike - and the Mistake

By May 26, HMS Ark Royal had maneuvered into position roughly 800 miles west of France. Swordfish from 825 Naval Air Squadron were on her deck in Force 8 winds and heavy swells, the carrier rolling fifteen degrees in each direction. She launched a strike anyway.

The aircraft found a ship in the murk and the spray, came in low through accurate anti-aircraft fire, and put torpedoes in the water. They turned for home and reported success.

The ship they had attacked was HMS Sheffield - their own cruiser, detached to shadow the Bismarck, whose presence had not been communicated to the strike crews. The torpedoes had been fitted that morning with contact pistols rather than magnetic pistols, and in the heavy swells they ran erratically. Some exploded prematurely from water pressure. The rest missed. Sheffield survived and sent back a signal reporting exactly what had just happened.

The aircraft landed. The contact pistols were removed. Magnetic pistols were fitted. The crews were briefed again - with considerably more precision on the location of friendly ships. A second strike of fifteen Swordfish launched in worsening conditions with the light already failing.

The Two Torpedoes That Ended Bismarck

Bismarck’s gunners were experienced and fully prepared. But the Swordfish created a targeting problem that a faster aircraft would not have. Fire control systems of that era were calibrated to lead a moving target - to put the projectile where the aircraft would be when it arrived. The Swordfish was attacking at roughly ninety knots. The standard fire control solution overled the target. The shells went ahead of the aircraft. Not because the pilots were doing anything especially brilliant - simply because ninety knots was below what the targeting solution was built for.

Two torpedoes hit the Bismarck. One amidships caused serious but manageable hull damage. The second struck near the steering compartment. Bismarck’s rudders jammed hard at fifteen degrees to port. Attempts to free them failed. The sea was too rough for divers to work outside the hull.

The most powerful battleship in the German fleet was now turning in circles in the North Atlantic.

On the morning of May 27, 1941, the Royal Navy battleships King George V and Rodney found her, along with cruisers and destroyers. The battle lasted roughly ninety minutes. Bismarck kept her guns firing until near the end. She sank after combined gunfire and torpedo attack. Of a crew of over 2,000 men, 114 survived.

The torpedo that sealed her fate came from a Swordfish. Open cockpit. Fabric and wire. 138 mph maximum speed in level flight. A design from the early 1930s, considered obsolete before the war began.

The Aircraft That Outlasted Its Replacements

The Fleet Air Arm genuinely tried to replace the Swordfish. The Fairey Albacore arrived in 1940 - a newer biplane with an enclosed cockpit, a more powerful engine, and modern systems in nearly every respect. The crews called it the Applecore and disliked flying it. The Albacore was retired before the Swordfish.

The Fairey Barracuda, a monoplane, came later and served with distinction in some operations, but it was maintenance-intensive and never earned the loyalty the Stringbag commanded from the people who flew it.

The Swordfish kept going. It hunted submarines in the Bay of Biscay with depth charges. It flew anti-submarine patrols from escort carriers on the Arctic convoys - in darkness, brutal cold, and seas that gave a man overboard very little time. Season after season, it kept flying.

The last operational Swordfish was retired from Royal Navy service in 1945. It had been considered obsolete before the war started. It outlasted the war. It sank more Axis shipping than any other Allied aircraft of the conflict.
