A real engine failure rarely sounds like the movies. Sometimes it’s a cough, sometimes a slow creeping roughness, and sometimes it’s sudden silence where the loudest thing becomes the wind over the windshield and your own heartbeat.

In that moment your body does something unhelpful. Your hand wants to freeze, your eyes lock onto the tachometer as if you can fix it by wishing, and the nose starts to drop - or worse, you instinctively pull back to hold altitude and drift toward a stall while you’re distracted.

That’s why you need a flow so simple and so drilled that you execute it before the fear even finishes arriving.

What Is the First Thing to Do in an Engine Failure? (A Is for Airspeed)

The first action is airspeed, and it’s the whole ballgame. The instant the engine quits, you push, lower the nose, and establish best glide speed. Not hold altitude. Not troubleshoot. Fly the airplane first.

Best glide is the speed that gives you the most distance across the ground for every foot of altitude you have in the bank. In a Cessna 172 it’s right around 68 knots, depending on model and weight, and a Piper Cherokee lives in a similar neighborhood. Look up your airplane’s number on the emergency page of the POH and memorize it like your own phone number.

Here’s what students get wrong: best glide does not mean slow. It’s a specific speed, and both sides of it hurt you. Too fast and you burn through altitude carrying speed you don’t need. Too slow and your glide steepens as you creep toward a stall - which in an engine failure is how a forced landing becomes a spin into the trees.

That’s why you keep a background awareness of what’s beneath you and off your wing throughout the whole flight. When it gets quiet, you’re not searching; you’re turning toward the field you already noticed.

How Do I Know I’ll Reach the Field?

Use an aim point. Pick a spot on the field and watch how it moves in your windscreen:

  • Sliding up toward you → you’re undershooting and will land short
  • Sliding down and away → you’re overshooting and will float past
  • Staying fixed in the glass → you’re going to hit it

This aim-point sight picture works the same on every approach you’ll ever fly, engine or no engine. When you have energy to spare, fly a normal traffic pattern to the field - a high key/low key spot above it, then downwind, base, and final, just like home. Don’t dive straight at it and arrive too fast, or dribble at it and arrive with nothing. Use the tools you already have.

How Do I Try to Restart the Engine? (C Is for Checklist, Cause, Communicate)

Now that you’re gliding, trimmed, and pointed at a field you can make, you get to play mechanic. Most engine failures - in training and in real life - are fuel or ignition, and they’re fixable if you catch them.

Run these memory items deliberately, touching and confirming each one:

  1. Fuel selector – switch tanks; is there fuel in the one you’re on?
  2. Fuel pump – on
  3. Mixture – rich
  4. Carburetor heat – on, if you fly a carbureted engine (carb ice is a quiet killer that presents exactly like this)
  5. Magnetos – check both, try each
  6. Primer – in and locked

Don’t rush the flow into a blur where your hand touches everything and confirms nothing. If the engine comes back, land at the nearest suitable airport and get it inspected - an engine that quit once will quit again. If it doesn’t come back, you’ve lost nothing, because you did all of this while gliding toward a field you already chose.

When and How Do I Call for Help?

Communicate last. The mantra is aviate, navigate, communicate - talking to a controller has never once kept a wing flying. When the flying is handled, do three things:

  • Squawk 7700 on your transponder - the emergency code - so every radar screen that can see you turns your target special
  • Say “Mayday, Mayday, Mayday” on the frequency you’re already on, or on 121.5, the emergency frequency guarded everywhere

And declaring an emergency costs you nothing. The regulations give the pilot in command the authority to do whatever is necessary to meet an emergency. The pilots who get in trouble aren’t the ones who declared - they’re the ones who were too proud to say the word and quietly ran out of options.

What About the Last 200 Feet?

The flow gets you to the field, but the final approach is its own skill. As you get close to the ground, several items go from optional to critical:

  • Fuel selector – off
  • Mixture – idle cutoff
  • Magnetos – off
  • Master switch – leave on until you need flaps, then off

You want to arrive with no fuel flowing and no spark, so that a rough arrival doesn’t become a fire. The airplane is replaceable; you are not.
