On the morning of June 4, 1942, American dive bomber pilots over the central Pacific executed what may be the most consequential five minutes in the history of naval aviation. Three Japanese fleet carriers - veterans of the Pearl Harbor attack - were effectively destroyed in a single coordinated strike. The airplane that delivered those blows was the Douglas SBD Dauntless, a utilitarian machine that went on to sink more enemy shipping than any other Allied aircraft in the Pacific war.

What Was the Douglas SBD Dauntless?

SBD stood for Scout Bomber, Douglas - and the designation described the aircraft’s purpose exactly. Find the enemy, attack the enemy, return and do it again. The design evolved from the Northrop BT-1 in the mid-1930s before Douglas refined it into its production form. By December 7, 1941, the Dauntless was already the primary carrier-based dive bomber in the U.S. Navy.

Powered by a Wright Cyclone radial engine developing approximately 1,200 horsepower, the Dauntless reached roughly 255 miles per hour in level flight. The Mitsubishi Zero could run it down with energy to spare. That was a known limitation - and an accepted one, because the Dauntless was never designed for level-flight combat.

Its defining feature was a set of perforated dive flaps along the trailing edge of the wing. Without them, a near-vertical attack dive would allow airspeed to build uncontrollably, destroying accuracy by the time the pilot reached release altitude. The perforations acted as dive brakes, keeping the aircraft stable and controllable throughout the attack.

How Dive Bombing in the Dauntless Actually Worked

A Dauntless attack dive ran at approximately 70 degrees nose-down. Pilots described it as controlled falling - airframe vibrating, altimeter unwinding the wrong direction, the sound of engine and wind shifting as the nose came through vertical. The crosshairs stayed on the target, small corrections made throughout the descent, bomb released below 2,500 feet, then a hard pull on the stick to recover before anti-aircraft guns could reacquire.

The rear-seat gunner faced aft throughout the dive, responsible for the radio and the flexible defensive gun. When enemy fighters pressed the attack during the pullout, he fought them off. During the dive itself, he was a passenger - watching the sea rise over his shoulder while the pilot worked.

The Strategic Situation Before Midway

By the spring of 1942, Imperial Japan had run nearly unchecked across the Pacific and Indian Oceans for six months. The Philippines, Wake Island, Guam, Singapore, Burma, and the Dutch East Indies had all fallen. Japanese carrier aviation had struck as far west as Ceylon.

Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto planned a decisive stroke: seize Midway Atoll, roughly 1,300 miles northwest of Honolulu, and draw the remaining American Pacific Fleet into a final engagement. The Japanese striking force - Kido Butai - centered on four fleet carriers: Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, and Hiryu. These were largely the same carriers that had launched the Pearl Harbor attack, and their air groups were among the finest in the world.

What Yamamoto didn’t know was that Commander Joseph Rochefort and his team at Station Hypo in Pearl Harbor had broken enough of the Japanese naval code to identify both the target and the timing. Admiral Chester Nimitz positioned his three operational carriers - Enterprise, Hornet, and Yorktown - northeast of Midway ahead of the Japanese approach.

Yorktown deserved special attention. Japanese intelligence had reported her sunk or out of action for months after her damage at the Battle of the Coral Sea in May. Workers at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard had actually worked 72 hours straight to restore her to fighting condition. She sailed for Midway with repair crews still aboard. The Japanese had no idea she was there.

Why the Initial American Attacks Failed

The morning of June 4 began badly. Aircraft launched from Midway Island - B-26 Marauders, Brewster Buffalos, older Vindicator dive bombers - pressed through experienced fighter cover and heavy anti-aircraft fire and accomplished essentially nothing.

Then the carrier-based torpedo squadrons went in.

The Douglas TBD Devastator was a torpedo bomber already past its prime. Its attack profile required slow, straight-and-level flight to give the torpedo a chance of running true. Against experienced Zero pilots, that combination was lethal.

  • Torpedo Squadron Eight from Hornet: 15 aircraft, 30 men - zero returned. One pilot, Ensign George Gay, survived wounded in the water and watched the rest of the battle unfold from the surface before rescue. He spent the rest of his life as the sole survivor of his squadron.

Why Those Torpedo Losses Were Not in Vain

The torpedo squadrons accomplished something that wouldn’t be understood until minutes later. The Japanese Zeros flying combat air patrol at altitude came down to sea level to intercept the Devastators. They swept through the American formations almost without loss to themselves - and in doing so, they vacated the sky at 14,000 feet.

That was the altitude Lieutenant Commander Clarence Wade McClusky was searching from.

McClusky’s Decision: The Moment That Changed the War

McClusky was leading the dive bomber groups off USS Enterprise. He had been searching well past his planned fuel limits. At least one pilot in his formation had already calculated that returning to the carrier was no longer realistic, regardless of what happened next.

He held on.

A single destroyer appeared below - Arashi - cutting a long white wake at high speed, heading back toward the Japanese fleet after staying behind to chase an American submarine. McClusky turned to follow the wake. It led him directly to Kido Butai.

What McClusky did was not strategy worked out at a planning table. It was judgment under pressure, in the air, low on fuel, with lives depending on his call. A cautious man turns back when the numbers say turn back.

The Five-Minute Strike: How Three Carriers Went Down

The Japanese carriers were caught at the worst possible moment. Aircraft recovered from the Midway strike were being refueled and rearmed below decks. Multiple ordnance changes - bombs swapped for torpedoes, then back to bombs - had left ordnance staged in the open on hangar decks with fuel lines running across the deck plates.

At almost exactly the moment McClusky tipped over into his dive, Lieutenant Commander Maxwell Leslie was bringing Yorktown’s dive bombers in from a completely different direction.

McClusky’s group targeted Kaga and Akagi. Lieutenant Commander Richard Best, leading Enterprise’s Bombing Squadron Six, redirected his element from Kaga when he saw McClusky’s aircraft already attacking her. His bomb - possibly two from his section - struck Akagi amidships. The secondary explosions through the staged ordnance below were catastrophic.

Leslie’s group dove on Soryu.

  • Kaga took four direct hits and was burning bow to stern within minutes.
  • Akagi - the flagship that had led the Pearl Harbor attack - took hits that triggered a chain of secondary explosions through her hangar deck. She burned for hours before her crew abandoned ship.
  • Soryu took three hits in rapid succession.

From the moment the first Dauntless tipped into its dive to the last bomb landing: approximately five minutes. Three fleet carriers effectively destroyed.

Hiryu and the End of the Battle

Hiryu, separated from the others, survived the initial strike. She launched two attack groups against Yorktown, which took serious damage and ultimately sank. That afternoon, Enterprise dive bombers found Hiryu and put four bombs into her. Hiryu sank the following morning.

Four fleet carriers - all veterans of Pearl Harbor - were gone in a single day.

McClusky’s Navy Cross and the Human Cost

McClusky’s aircraft flew through intense anti-aircraft fire throughout the attack. Some came back riddled. Some did not come back. McClusky himself was wounded during the dive and flew back to Enterprise in serious pain.

He received the Navy Cross. The citation directly acknowledged that his decision to extend the search past fuel limits - past what the mission plan called for, past what any reasonable calculation would have permitted - had been one of the decisive acts of the engagement.

The Dauntless’s Record for the Rest of the War

The SBD Dauntless kept fighting through 1943 and into 1944, from Guadalcanal to the Philippine Sea. In total, it sank more enemy shipping than any other Allied aircraft in the Pacific war - more than the torpedo bombers, more than the Army Air Forces’ heavy bombers working from high altitude.

It was replaced by the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver beginning in 1944. The transition was not smooth. Pilots who had flown the Dauntless were skeptical of the Helldiver from the start - faster and carrying more, but with handling characteristics that made experienced aviators uneasy. The Dauntless, by contrast, had a reputation for honesty: it telegraphed what it was about to do. That quality mattered considerably when diving at 70 degrees with a thousand-pound bomb and someone below was working hard to end the sortie early.

Where to See a Surviving Dauntless

A handful of Dauntlesses survive today. The National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola holds one, as does the National Air and Space Museum in Washington. A few others are held in private collections around the country, and very few remain airworthy.
