What the SBD Dauntless Was - and Why It Worked

SBD stood for Scout Bomber Douglas, a name as functional as the aircraft itself. Crews had less flattering names for it. “Slow But Deadly” was common. Some called it the “Barge.” Neither suggested a war winner.

The design evolved from an earlier Northrop aircraft called the BT-1. When Douglas acquired the El Segundo division that built it, their engineers refined what worked and corrected what did not. By 1940, the Dauntless was in production and entering service with the Navy and Marine Corps.

It was a compact, two-seat aircraft powered by a Wright R-1820 Cyclone radial engine producing roughly 1,000 horsepower. Push most aircraft of that era into a 70-degree dive and they would either exceed structural limits or build speed so rapidly that recovery forces would black out the crew or tear the wings off.

Nimitz repositioned three American carriers northeast of Midway and ordered them to wait. The Yorktown had been badly damaged at Coral Sea, with initial repair estimates of 90 days. The Pearl Harbor shipyard completed those repairs in 72 hours. She was not perfect, but she could fly aircraft.

June 4, 1942: The Decision That Doomed the Japanese Fleet

Nagumo launched his first wave against Midway that morning. The island took damage but stayed operational - the runway remained open, and aircraft kept launching. His strike leader radioed back that a second wave would be needed.

Nagumo ordered his reserve aircraft - armed with torpedoes in case American ships appeared - to be rearmed with bombs for a second ground attack. In practice, this filled the hangar decks of four fleet carriers with half-armed aircraft, strung fueling hoses, and ordnance being moved in haste. Bombs and torpedoes sat in passageways, clear of the magazine hatches but nowhere near safe.

The torpedo squadrons arrived first.

Torpedo Eight from the Hornet, flying TBD Devastators, found the Japanese fleet. The TBD was genuinely obsolete - slow, unmaneuverable, and required the pilot to fly straight and level at low altitude to launch. That meant a straight line through every gun the Japanese fleet could bring to bear, with Zero fighters descending to meet them.

All 15 aircraft of Torpedo Eight were shot down. Not one torpedo hit. Of the 30 crew members, one survived: Ensign George Gay, who ended up in the water holding a black seat cushion over his head to hide from Japanese aircraft overhead. He watched the rest of the battle from sea level.

McClusky’s Decision and the Navigation That Found the Fleet

Lieutenant Commander Wade McClusky had been circling with 37 Dauntlesses from the Enterprise air group. He reached the intercept coordinates and found nothing. The Japanese fleet was not where the plot said it would be. His fuel was getting low.

He turned southwest.

McClusky spotted the Japanese destroyer Arashi, running at high speed on a northeast heading. She had been chasing an American submarine and was now racing to rejoin the main fleet. McClusky followed her wake.

Arriving from a different direction at nearly the same moment were 17 Dauntlesses from the Yorktown’s Bombing Three, led by Lieutenant Commander Maxwell Leslie. An electrical arming malfunction had accidentally released several bombs before the attack, leaving some of Leslie’s aircraft with nothing to drop. But Leslie pressed the attack, and those who still had ordnance were ready.

Two dive bomber groups. Different carriers. Different approach angles. No radio coordination. Almost no fuel remaining. And four Japanese fleet carriers spread below them, their hangar decks packed with aircraft, ordnance, and fueling hoses.

McClusky split his group. His two squadrons took separate targets. Leslie’s group went for the Soryu.

The Zeros were still climbing. They did not get there in time.

The Four Minutes: Dick Best and the Attack on the Akagi

Lieutenant Commander Dick Best, leading a section of Bombing Six, saw too many aircraft converging on the Kaga. He pulled up, redirected his division toward the Akagi - Nagumo’s flagship - and put his bombs into her flight deck. One bomb penetrated to the hangar below and detonated in the middle of the rearming chaos: torpedoes, bombs left in the passageways, fueling hoses. It all went up.

The Kaga took multiple hits. Same result.

Leslie’s group put three bombs into the Soryu.

Three carriers were burning, all within minutes of each other. Each became an inferno from the inside out, ignited by the improperly stowed ordnance that should never have been on those hangar decks. Nagumo transferred his flag from the burning Akagi to a cruiser. Her crew fought the fires for hours before she was scuttled.

The Hiryu and the Loss of Yorktown

The Hiryu survived the initial attack. Her aircraft launched two strikes against the Yorktown and damaged her badly enough to leave her dead in the water. American salvage efforts nearly succeeded - the Yorktown was still afloat and under tow two days later when a Japanese submarine put torpedoes into her. She went down on June 7, 1942.

That same afternoon of June 4th, Dauntlesses from the Enterprise found the Hiryu. Four bomb hits. She burned through the night and sank before dawn.

The Cost on Both Sides

The Dauntless After Midway

Ensign George Gay, the sole survivor of Torpedo Eight, was recovered by a Catalina patrol aircraft the day after the battle. He kept flying and kept serving.
