C.R. Smith, president of American Airlines, had a bolder idea than anyone else in the room. He wanted a sleeper aircraft - something that could carry passengers overnight across the continent in berths, like a Pullman railroad car with wings. The pitch: board after dinner in New York, wake up in Los Angeles.

Smith called Donald Douglas at 2 a.m. He asked for 20 aircraft that hadn’t been designed yet, on $2 million in credit that Douglas had no particular reason to extend. Douglas was already stretched. The DC-2 was selling. His engineers were occupied. He did not want the project.

First Flight: December 17, 1935

Douglas’s team built a stretched, widened, more powerful evolution of the DC-2. The Douglas Sleeper Transport (DST) made its first flight on December 17, 1935 - exactly 32 years to the day after Orville Wright flew at Kitty Hawk. Whether that symmetry was intentional is unknown. Douglas’s engineers knew their aviation history. They would have known the date.

The DST carried 14 passengers in sleeping berths. When the berths came out and seats went in, the aircraft held 21 passengers. That day-version became the DC-3.

Why the DC-3 Changed the Economics of Aviation

In the China-Burma-India theater, C-47 crews flew a route known as the Hump - from bases in northeast India over the eastern Himalayas to Kunming, China. Peaks topped 22,000 feet. Icing built on wings at terrifying speed. Mountain wave turbulence could throw a loaded transport out of controlled flight. Japanese fighters controlled the lower passes, making anything below 15,000 feet a serious hazard.

Between 1942 and 1945, American crews flew more than 600,000 tons of supplies over those mountains. More than 600 aircraft were lost on the route. The crews who flew the Hump understood what they were doing. They went anyway.

D-Day: The Night of June 5–6, 1944

On the night of June 5–6, 1944, more than 800 C-47s lifted off from airfields across southern England. In the back were paratroopers of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions - most of them young men who had never seen combat, weighted down with weapons and equipment, sitting in red jump-light glow over the dark water of the Channel.

Operation Market Garden: September 1944

Three months later, in September 1944, C-47s delivered the largest airborne operation in history into the Netherlands. Operation Market Garden aimed to seize a series of bridges and open a highway to the Rhine. The British 1st Airborne Division dropped at Arnhem and held for nine days while ground forces fought to reach them - and never quite did.

The bridge at Arnhem entered history as the “bridge too far.” The C-47 crews had done their job. The ground war had failed to close the gap. Those crews had flown the corridor day after day knowing what was waiting at the far end.

General Eisenhower said after the war that the C-47 was one of four pieces of equipment most responsible for the Allied victory. The other three: the bazooka, the jeep, and the atomic bomb. That is the company the Gooney Bird kept.

Why Pilots Called It the Gooney Bird

The name traces to the Laysan Albatross, which Pacific sailors called a gooney bird. The albatross is ungainly on the ground - enormous wings making takeoff and landing look improbable. The description fit the C-47 well enough that the name never left.
