It had a wider fuselage with room for 14 sleeping berths - curtained bunks where a passenger could go to bed over Kansas and wake up near the coast. The DC-3 goes to war as the C-47 Skytrain
When World War II arrived, the U.S. military looked at this go-anywhere transport and ordered every one Douglas could build. They stripped out the airline seats, added a large cargo door and a reinforced floor, and pressed it into service as the C-47 Skytrain. The British called theirs the Dakota. To the troops, the name that stuck was the Gooney Bird.
It flew the Hump - the route over the eastern Himalayas from India into China, across some of the most brutal terrain and weather on earth. After the war, General Dwight Eisenhower was asked to name the most important tools of the Allied victory. Alongside the jeep, the bazooka, and the landing craft, he named the C-47 - not a fighter or a bomber, but the humble transport that showed up every day and did the work.
Why the DC-3 is still flying today
Douglas and its licensees built more than 16,000 DC-3s and military variants, counting all the versions produced worldwide.
And they’re still flying - not just in museums, but earning a living. DC-3s still haul freight into short, rough strips in Alaska, the Canadian north, the islands, and across Africa, where the runways are demanding, the loads are heavy, and nothing else fits the job as well. An airplane designed with slide rules and drafting tables is still doing honest work roughly 90 years after its first flight.
People have tried to build a replacement for as long as the type has existed. There’s an old joke that the only replacement for a DC-3 is another DC-3 - and there’s truth in it. Nothing since has quite matched its combination of toughness, simplicity, versatility, and the ability to fly out of a cow pasture with a real load in the belly.
