What Is the DC-3 Like to Fly?

The DC-3 is a taildragger, so it sits nose-high on the ground with the long snout blocking the view straight ahead. Pilots taxi in gentle S-turns just to see what’s in front of them. Everything in the cockpit is oversized - big yokes, a big throttle quadrant, big trim wheels.

Some operators modernized instead of replacing. Conversions like the Basler BT-67 strip off the round engines, hang modern turboprops, stretch the fuselage, and add new avionics - sending the airframe back out for decades more service. Turbine DC-3s currently fly research missions in Antarctica, operating off the ice in cold that would crack most airplanes.

The engineers never set out to build an immortal airplane. They set out to build C.R. Smith a machine that could earn money carrying passengers across the country.
