On a private pilot checkride, the examiner wants you to turn toward your alternate promptly, choose a suitable field, and give a reasonable estimate of heading, time, and fuel to reach it. The key is that a diversion is a decision made quickly and backed by rough numbers - not a precise flight plan calculated in the cockpit.

Why Your Flight Log Can’t Help You Diverte

Your carefully prepared flight log answers exactly one question: how to get from your starting point to your planned destination. It’s a script for a flight where nothing goes wrong.

But real flights don’t always cooperate. The engine runs rough and you want to be on the ground. A building cell sits directly on your route. Your passenger turns green. Your destination drops below minimums. Any of these means going somewhere your flight log never mentioned.

That’s a diversion, and it’s the one part of cross-country planning you cannot do on the ground. It’s also a required task in the Airman Certification Standards (ACS) under cross-country flight planning.

What Is the Examiner Actually Looking For?

The examiner is not looking for precision. They are looking for a decision.

There’s a persistent myth in flight schools that when the Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) calls a diversion, you’re supposed to pull out your plotter, measure the exact true course, apply magnetic variation, work the wind triangle, and announce a heading to the degree - all while the airplane flies straight ahead at two miles a minute in the wrong direction.

Don’t be that pilot. The number one mistake on a diversion is not a bad heading - it’s a slow one. Burying your head in the cockpit doing math while the airplane keeps flying away from your alternate is the real failure.

How Do I Fly a Diversion? A Step-by-Step Method

The method follows the same priority you use everywhere in aviation: aviate, navigate, then handle the fine print. Airplane first, rough direction second, details last.

Step 1: Turn the Airplane Immediately

The second you decide to divert, make a rough turn toward where you think the airport is. You do not need a calculated heading to do this - you just need to point the nose in the general direction.

If the airport is off your left wing, start a left turn and roll out pointing more or less at it. You’ve just done the single most important thing on the entire task: you stopped flying away from your alternate. Everything else gets refined while the airplane is already going the right way.

Turn first. Refine second.

Step 2: Pick the Right Airport - Fast

Sometimes the examiner names the airport. Sometimes they simply say “get us on the ground somewhere,” and the choice is yours.

Distance matters - closer is generally better - but it isn’t the only factor. Consider what lies between you and the field. A ridge line, a chunk of Class Bravo airspace, or a restricted area between you and the nearest airport can make that “nearest” airport the worst choice. A field five miles farther with clear terrain and open airspace is often the better divert.

  • Runway length appropriate for your airplane
  • Fuel availability, if that’s why you’re diverting
  • Towered or non-towered, and whether you’re set up to talk to the right people
  • Easy to find - a field on the edge of a good-sized town, or next to a lake or highway you can spot from twenty miles out, beats a hidden strip in the trees

Use your tools, too. The nearest airport function on a GPS or an app like ForeFlight or Garmin Pilot gives you a list sorted by distance with the bearing and mileage to each field. That’s a completely legitimate tool - use it. But learn to do it on a paper chart as well, because the day the screen goes dark is exactly the day you’ll need to divert.

Step 3: The Clock, the Compass, and Your Thumb

Once you’re turned and you’ve picked your field, you want three numbers: a heading, a time, and a fuel burn. You can get all three - close enough - without a single formula.

Heading. Don’t measure a precise course line. Eyeball the direction from your position to the airport and use the compass rose, a nearby airway, or simply north-up on the chart to get a rough magnetic direction. Northeast is roughly 045°; east is roughly 090°. Turn to that heading, hold it, and look outside. If the airport should be on the nose but is drifting right, nudge right. You’re navigating by eye and correcting - a rough heading you actually fly beats a perfect heading calculated too late.

Distance - the thumb trick. Every latitude tick mark on the side of a sectional represents one minute of latitude, and one minute of latitude always equals one nautical mile - every chart, every scale. Before the flight, mark ten miles on the edge of a piece of paper (or your kneeboard, or a pen) against the latitude scale. Now you have a ruler you built yourself. Lay it from your position to the airport and read off the distance - say, about twenty-five miles. No plotter required.

Time. Use your groundspeed as miles per minute. At about 90 knots you’re doing 1.5 miles a minute, so twenty-five miles takes roughly 17 minutes. At 120 knots you’re doing 2 miles a minute, so twenty-five miles is about 12.5 minutes. Round it - the examiner wants a reasonable number and your reasoning, not a stopwatch reading.

A clean mental anchor: at 60 knots, you cover exactly one mile a minute (60 miles in 60 minutes). Most trainers cruise faster, so you’re a little quicker than a mile a minute - shade your estimate down from there.

Fuel. You already know your airplane’s burn from planning. At 8 gallons per hour, that’s roughly one gallon every 8 minutes. A 17-minute divert burns a little over 2 gallons. But the real question isn’t just the fuel to get there - it’s whether you have that plus your reserve plus a margin. The answer had better be a comfortable yes.

Notice what just happened: the fuel number isn’t only for the examiner. It’s a decision tool. If the honest answer to “can I make it?” is anything other than a clear yes, pick a closer airport. That’s the whole game.

A Real Diversion Scenario, Start to Finish

You’re cruising at 110 knots, straight and level, forty minutes into your cross-country. The examiner points out the window: “See that buildup off to the right? I don’t want to fly through that. Divert to the nearest suitable airport.”

Here’s what a strong pilot does:

  1. Wings first. Start a gentle turn away from the weather and toward open air. You’re not even at the diversion yet - you’re just not flying at the thunderstorm.
  2. Pick the field. A glance at the chart (or the nearest function) shows an airport about 20 miles ahead and to your left, sitting on the corner of a decent-sized town, with a long runway, non-towered, and clear country in between. You choose it out loud: “I’m going there - it’s close, easy to spot on the edge of that town, terrain’s clear, and it has plenty of runway.”
  3. Roll out and confirm. You settle on a rough heading of about 320° (northwest) and look outside to confirm the town is coming up on the nose.
  4. Estimate. Twenty miles at just under two miles a minute is about 11 to 12 minutes. At 8 gallons per hour, twelve minutes is a shade under 2 gallons, and you have well over an hour of fuel aboard - an easy yes.

You’re turned, you’re pointed, you have a time and a fuel figure, and you’ve explained your reasoning - all in under a minute of actual thinking while the airplane flew the entire time.

Don’t Forget to Tell Someone

When you divert, you don’t just disappear. If you’re talking to anyone - flight following, a tower, approach - tell them: “Nashville Approach, Cessna One-Two-Three, diverting to the airport on my left due to weather.”

If you’re not talking to anybody, a diversion is a great moment to get someone on the line. A change of plan is exactly when a second set of eyes on the ground earns its keep. And if things are genuinely going wrong - the weather is worse than expected, or you’re unsure of your position - confess early and ask for help. There is no trophy for handling an emergency quietly.

Give Yourself Grace and Practice

The diversion feels impossible the first few times because it seems like you’re supposed to compress a whole flight plan into ten seconds. You’re not. You’re making a good decision quickly and backing it with rough numbers. The precision comes later, and it never needs to be perfect.

Practice it. On your next cross-country with your instructor, pick a random airport off to the side halfway there and divert to it. Turn, pick, estimate. Do it five times and it stops being scary - it becomes a tool.

That’s what the diversion really is: the skill that means the destination is never a trap. You can always change your mind, always find another door, always put the airplane somewhere safe.
