A diversion is the skill of abandoning your carefully filed flight plan the moment it stops being safe and getting to a suitable alternate airport instead. On a checkride, the examiner is not grading precision - they want to see judgment, priorities, and a pilot who keeps flying the airplane while making fast, reasonable estimates of heading, distance, time, and fuel. Point the nose first, then do the small calculations with your thumb and the chart.

Why the Diversion Task Matters

The diversion isn’t the examiner trying to trick you. It exists because someday the weather really will close in on your destination, a passenger will get sick, or the honest math on fuel and groundspeed will tell you that you aren’t going to make the airport you filed for.

It is the single most useful cross-country skill you will ever own, because it is the skill of throwing away the plan and staying safe anyway. Everything you drew on the ground was a good idea in the conditions you expected. When the conditions change, the good idea changes with them.

What Does the ACS Actually Require for a Diversion?

The Airman Certification Standards (ACS) task is called Diversion, and students routinely build it into something bigger than it is. The standard asks you to:

  • Select a suitable airport or point and promptly divert toward it
  • Make a reasonable estimate of heading, groundspeed, arrival time, and fuel
  • Maintain control of the airplane the entire time

That last item is the one written in invisible ink: fly the airplane first. Nobody expects you to draw a perfect course line and compute a wind-corrected heading to the degree while hand-flying a Cessna 172 in bumps. If you put your head down for two minutes to do that, you’ll drift off altitude and heading and fail the very task you were trying to pass.

How Do I Handle a Diversion Step by Step?

The order is the whole secret. When the examiner folds up your flight plan and says “divert to that airport,” run this sequence.

1. Fly the airplane and turn to a rough heading now

Pick a heading that’s roughly right and turn to it immediately - before you calculate anything, before you touch a pencil. A rough heading flown right now is worth more than a perfect heading flown two minutes from now. Aviate, navigate, communicate, in that order.

To get the rough heading without math, use your thumb and your eyeball. Find your present position on the sectional, find the diversion airport, and relate the line between them to north-south-east-west. Is the airport up and to the right? You’re going roughly northeast - turn to 045 and refine from there. Lay your thumb, a pencil, or the edge of your kneeboard along that line and eyeball it against a line of longitude, which runs straight north-south. You can answer “which way do I point the airplane” in about five seconds.

2. Estimate the distance

You don’t need a plotter. Every sectional has a scale, but the faster trick is the lines of latitude: one degree of latitude equals 60 nautical miles, so each minute of latitude equals one nautical mile. The tick marks between latitude lines on the side of the chart are a ruler that’s already printed and already to scale.

Pinch off the distance with your fingers, hold it against the latitude scale, and round. If it’s 22 nautical miles, call it 20. Good enough.

3. Figure groundspeed and time

This is where people freeze, but you already know your groundspeed - you’ve been computing it off checkpoints for the last 20 minutes. If you were making 100 knots over the ground, use 100 knots. The wind hits your new heading at a different angle, so it isn’t exact, and it doesn’t need to be. No examiner busts you for using 100 when the true number was 94.

Then do the easy math. 100 knots is a little under two miles a minute. Twenty miles at two miles a minute is about 10 to 12 minutes - your estimated time en route. Note the clock, add the minutes, and you have your estimated time of arrival.

4. Confirm the fuel

If you know your burn, this is one more easy step. Say you’re burning 8 gallons per hour. Twelve minutes is a fifth of an hour, so that’s about 1.5 gallons to reach the field. Compare it to what’s in your tanks and say it out loud so the examiner hears you close the loop: “I’ve got 20 gallons, I need under two to get there, we’re in great shape on fuel.”

Throughout all four steps you never stop flying for more than a glance. Point the nose, glance down, do one small thing, look back up, fly. Point, glance, fly. That rhythm is what the examiner is really grading.

What Does a Real-World Diversion Look Like?

You’re a student pilot on your long solo cross-country at 4,500 feet, and the visibility ahead is going milky. The ceiling that was forecast scattered is looking broken and coming down. Your destination is still 40 miles ahead, right under the murk. This isn’t a checkride - it’s Tuesday, and it’s real.

Do not press on hoping it clears. That hopeful little voice has flown a lot of good pilots into bad situations. Instead, glance back toward the bright sky behind you, where you remember a long paved runway about 15 miles back. Thumb on the chart: it’s behind you and slightly left, roughly 225, southwest. Turn now. Fifteen miles at 100 knots is nine minutes to sunshine and a runway. That’s being pilot in command in the truest sense.

The pilots who get hurt are almost never the ones who diverted early. They’re the ones who kept the original plan long after the sky told them to let it go.

How Can I Practice Diversions Before the Checkride?

  • Play the diversion game constantly. Wherever you are, ask: if I had to be on the ground in ten minutes, where would I go, which way would I turn, how far is it? Do it a thousand times in your head and the checkride diversion becomes a non-event.
  • Always know your present position. A diversion is nearly impossible if you don’t know where you are when it’s sprung on you. Half of a good diversion is never getting lost in the first place - track your progress and know your spot within a couple of miles at all times.
  • Learn to love the rough number. Ninety percent right in ten seconds beats 100 percent right in two minutes head-down, every time. Round everything: 22 miles is 20, 94 knots is 100, 11.5 minutes is 12.
  • Narrate out loud. Say “I’m turning northeast for the airport, about 20 miles, making 100 knots so call it 12 minutes, plenty of fuel.” It shows your judgment, keeps you organized, and helps you catch your own mistakes.
  • Use the tablet, but master the thumb first. A moving map draws a course and distance instantly, and in the real world you should use every tool you have. But panels fail, batteries die, and tablets overheat on the glareshield. The pilot who can point a thumb at a chart and turn toward safety never has a bad day because a screen went dark.
