A diversion is the mid-flight decision to abandon your planned route and fly to a nearer suitable airport, usually because of weather or another change in conditions. On a checkride, the examiner isn’t grading precision - they want to see you pick a suitable airport, turn toward it quickly, give a reasonable estimate of heading, time, and fuel, and never stop flying the airplane. You can do the whole thing in under a minute using your thumb to measure distance and a simple two-miles-a-minute rule for time.

What Is a Diversion and What Does the Examiner Actually Want?

In the FAA Airman Certification Standards (ACS), the diversion is its own task under cross-country flight planning. The examiner wants to confirm you can select a suitable airport and route to it, produce a reasonable estimate of heading, groundspeed, arrival time, and fuel burn, and do all of it while you keep flying.

That last part is the whole game. The examiner is not looking for perfection. A heading off by three degrees won’t fail you.

Students fail the diversion because they put their head down in the cockpit, start drawing lines with a plotter, and forget they’re the only thing holding the airplane up. If you turn toward a good airport, give a ballpark time estimate, and never stop flying, you’ve passed the task.

How Do I Handle a Diversion Without Panicking?

Build a repeatable method that keeps your head up. It comes down to five moves: fly the airplane, pick the airport, thumb the distance, eyeball the heading, turn.

Step one: Fly the airplane. The moment “divert” is called, your instinct is to look down and solve the problem. Don’t. Point the nose in the general direction you think you need to go, level the wings, and trim. Buy yourself a stable platform first. Then think.

Step two: Pick the airport. Don’t chase the perfect field with the long runway, cheap fuel, and a restaurant. You want suitable and close. Look for an airport near you that fits the airplane - long enough runway, airspace you’re comfortable with, and ideally into the wind if weather is a factor. Nearest and adequate beats far and perfect, every time.

Should I Use the GPS “Nearest” Function or Do It by Hand?

Use both. Your GPS has a Nearest page - on a Garmin, hit Direct-To or the Nearest page and it lists the closest airports with distance and bearing. That’s a legitimate tool, and the examiner will let you use it.

But learn the manual method too, because the day a diversion really counts might be the day the alternator quit, or the day you’re task-saturated flying into deteriorating weather and scrolling menu pages is the last thing you need. You want a backup that lives in your hands and needs no batteries.

How Do I Measure Distance and Heading With My Thumb?

On most sectional charts, the distance across your thumb - tip to first knuckle - is right around ten nautical miles at sectional scale. Everyone’s thumb is different, so calibrate yours on the ground: use the latitude scale or mileage markers to find ten miles, and see where that lands on your thumb.

Lay your thumb from your present position to the divert airport. Two thumb-widths is about twenty miles. Now you have distance.

For direction, skip the plotter. Look at the nearest line of longitude - those run north-south - and eyeball the angle from your position to the airport. Straight up the chart is roughly north (360), right is east (090), down is south (180), left is west (270). If the airport is up and slightly right, that’s around 020 to 030. Turn the airplane to it. You’re now diverting.

How Do I Estimate Time and Fuel in My Head?

Here’s the most useful number in cross-country flying that almost nobody teaches as a rule of thumb: most trainers cruise around 120 knots, which is two miles a minute. Divide the distance by two and you have your time.

  • Twenty miles away? Ten minutes.
  • Thirty miles? Fifteen minutes.

Know your airplane’s number before takeoff. A Cessna 152 at 90 knots is a mile and a half a minute. A Cessna 172 at about 120 knots is your clean two-a-minute.

For fuel, work from your burn rate. If your airplane burns eight gallons per hour, that’s a gallon every seven and a half minutes - call it a gallon every eight minutes to keep the math easy. A ten-minute leg costs a little over a gallon.

Then ask the real question: do I have that, plus my reserves, plus a comfortable margin? If yes, you’re golden. If it’s getting tight, that itself tells you how urgent this diversion really is.

Do I Need to Correct for Wind on a Diversion?

Eyeballing the heading off the chart gives you a course, not a wind-corrected heading - but on a short diversion of twenty or thirty miles, the wind correction is usually small enough to ignore up front. Point the nose, watch the airport, and if you’re drifting to one side, crab into it.

Pilotage cleans up dead reckoning. You look outside, find the airport, and fly to the thing you can see. That’s the beauty of a diversion: you usually get to look at where you’re going.

A Real-World Diversion, Step by Step

You’re a student on your long solo cross-country. Everything’s fine, then the visibility ahead goes soft and the horizon turns hazy. The build-up mentioned in your briefing showed up an hour early. Nobody’s grading you - this is real.

You don’t panic. You level the wings, hold heading for a second, and think. You remember an airport back and to your right, maybe fifteen miles away, with a long runway and clear of the weather. You thumb the chart - about fifteen. You eyeball the direction: it’s behind your right shoulder, roughly south, so about a 170 heading. You start a gentle turn.

Fifteen miles at two miles a minute is seven or eight minutes. You’ve got plenty of fuel. You take a breath, pull up the ATIS or AWOS on the way in, and now you’re not a scared student - you’re a pilot executing a plan. Practice it until it’s boring, so that when it’s real, it’s boring.

Three Habits That Make Diversions Safe

Divert early. A good diversion decision is almost always an early one. The pilots who get in trouble aren’t the ones who divert - they’re the ones who press on, hope it improves, and turn only when they’re already boxed in with weather closing behind them. The best time to divert is the moment you first think, “I don’t love this.” That little voice is data. Start running the numbers even if you don’t turn yet, and have the airport picked before you need it.

Tell somebody. If you’re talking to ATC - and on a cross-country you often are - use them: “Approach, I’d like to divert to such-and-such airport for weather, request direct.” They’ll give you a vector, a frequency, and a heading to the field. A controller would far rather turn you toward a good airport than watch you push into something ugly. On the checkride, using every resource - including the humans on the radio - is exactly the judgment the examiner wants.

Keep flying the airplane. Every cross-country task, the diversion most of all, is a test of whether you can think and fly at the same time. Do your figuring in small bites: head up, pick the heading, turn; head down five seconds, thumb the distance; head up, fly; head down, do the time math; head up, fly. Never let the arithmetic pull you into a descent you didn’t notice.

Practice the Diversion Before You Need It

The cross-country phase is where a lot of a student’s money and worry lives, and the diversion feels like the scariest part because it’s the part you can’t fully plan. But that’s backwards. The diversion is the one skill that proves you don’t need the perfect plan - you can handle it when the plan falls apart.

Next time you go up, even on a nice day, play the game. Pick a spot on your route, cover the GPS, and say, “Divert. Now.” Thumb the distance, eyeball the heading, do the time in your head, turn - then check yourself against the panel and see how close you got. Do it a dozen times, and the day someone taps the chart and says “get us down,” your hands will already know what to do.
