Ditching a general aviation aircraft on water is survivable. Studies of GA ditching accidents consistently show the vast majority of water landings are survivable when the pilot had a plan and executed it. The determining factor is not where you go down - it is whether you thought about this scenario before you left the ground.

Which Pilots Actually Need to Know This?

The Great Lakes alone cover nearly 95,000 square miles. Florida has thousands of lakes scattered across nearly every part of the state. Add every river crossing, reservoir, coastal hop, and international water crossing to the Bahamas, Catalina Island, Hawaii, or coastal Alaska - and this topic applies to far more pilots than those who fly offshore routinely.

Beyond the geographic reality, the Airman Certification Standards for private pilot require demonstrated knowledge of emergency procedures that includes water landings. An examiner can and will ask about this during the oral exam. Understanding ditching makes every pilot more complete, regardless of where they normally fly.

What Goes in a Pre-Water-Crossing Brief?

Pre-flight planning is where the decisions get made that give you options later. Five minutes before departure, cover these items.

Life vests. Every occupant needs one. An inflatable personal flotation device costs between $40 and $80 - the cheapest insurance in aviation. If you are flying an unfamiliar aircraft, physically locate the vests before you start the engine.

Brief passengers on vest inflation. The single most critical point: do not inflate the vest inside the aircraft. A fully inflated vest creates positive buoyancy that works directly against you when the cabin is filling with water. It can make pushing yourself down and out through the door nearly impossible. Inflate outside, after you are clear of the cabin. Have passengers repeat this back to you.

File a flight plan. Even for short water crossings, even if you have flight following. A filed plan means someone is looking for you on a schedule. If your radio and ELT both fail after impact, that plan is what starts the search.

Know your ELT. Where is it physically located in the aircraft? Does it auto-activate on impact? Where is the manual activation switch? Know this before you need to find it in a hurry. A personal locator beacon in the flight bag is worth serious consideration for any regular over-water flying - PLBs have a demonstrated record of accelerating rescues over water.

When Should You Make a Mayday Call Over Water?

The moment you recognize a serious problem over water, the Mayday call comes early - not after troubleshooting is complete, not after you confirm the engine is definitely not recovering.

Mayday, Mayday, Mayday. Three times on your last known frequency, or on 121.5 MHz, the international emergency frequency monitored by most ATC facilities and search and rescue. Follow with aircraft type and callsign, your best position, the nature of the emergency, souls on board, and fuel remaining. Squawk 7700.

You do not need a complete picture of the problem before transmitting. Even a partial call - just your callsign and position - gives rescuers a starting point. A complete call is better, but any call is infinitely better than none.

How Do You Choose a Ditching Heading When There Are Swells?

This is where pilots who learned ditching only at a surface level get into trouble. The instinct is to land into the wind, exactly as on a runway. That is correct when water is calm and wind is light. When there are swells, the calculation changes significantly.

Open water almost always has a primary swell direction - long, organized waves from the dominant wind or storm system influencing the water. Secondary swells run at different angles from a different source, with shorter wind waves layered on top. All of this is readable from altitude.

The Aeronautical Information Manual establishes the priority order for ditching heading selection, validated by decades of accident experience:

  1. Wind - first consideration
  2. Primary swell direction - second
  3. Secondary swells and surface conditions - third

When winds are light (under approximately 25–30 knots): swell direction dominates. Land parallel to the primary swell even if that means accepting a crosswind. Riding along the wave shape rather than punching through it perpendicular dramatically reduces the risk of the nose burying and the aircraft cartwheeling.

When winds are strong (above 30 knots): the headwind component starts to dominate. The benefit of reduced groundspeed at touchdown outweighs the benefit of a smoother surface.

If altitude permits before committing, fly one wide circle over the area. From above 2,000 feet, swell lines are clearly visible. From 200 feet on final, you are mostly guessing. Use the altitude while you have it.

The touchdown goal is the trough - the flatter area between swells - with the water surface running parallel beneath you, not the crest. Timing the flare to contact water in a trough puts you on the most stable surface available.

How Do You Configure and Fly the Ditching Approach?

Flaps: full, in most light aircraft. This gives the slowest possible touchdown speed, and on the water every knot matters. Deceleration at water contact is abrupt and significant - water does not absorb energy the way a grass strip does.

Speed and attitude: Fly just above stall speed with a slightly nose-high attitude. The tail should contact the water before the nose. If the nose hits first, it buries, and the aircraft pitches forward violently.

Power: Use whatever engine power remains to control descent rate. If the engine is completely gone, manage energy as in any other forced landing.

On short final, within approximately 100 feet:

  • Mixture to idle cutoff
  • Fuel selector to OFF
  • Magnetos OFF

These actions reduce fire risk at the moment of impact.

Door: Unlatch before touchdown - not swinging open, just unlatched. Impact forces can distort the door frame enough that a latched door cannot be opened afterward. The pressure differential as the cabin floods can also work against you. Pop the latch and guarantee your exit before you need it.

Seatbelt and shoulder harness: Fully snug. Water impact forces are comparable to a hard ground landing.

Brace: Hands off the controls, pressing against the instrument panel or crossed in your lap. Feet off the rudder pedals. This protects ankles and knees from the pedal kick at impact.

The aircraft may skip on initial contact, especially with slightly excess speed or a crest touchdown. Stay braced through the skip and deceleration. When motion stops, you move.

What Do You Do After the Aircraft Stops Moving?

High-wing aircraft (such as the Cessna 172 and 182) often float for several minutes because the wings provide substantial buoyancy. Low-wing aircraft tend to sink considerably faster. Some aircraft settle upright; others nose over or flip inverted.

If the aircraft inverts: wait until motion stops before attempting to exit. Fighting the door while the aircraft is actively tumbling means working against both water resistance and rotational momentum simultaneously. Once motion stops, orient yourself - which direction is up - then exit.

This scenario is worth mentally rehearsing on the ground: could you locate the door handle by feel alone, in the dark, upside down, underwater? That mental rehearsal matters more than most pilots give it credit for.

Exit immediately and clear the aircraft. Get at least 30–40 feet away from a sinking aircraft - it can create a suction effect capable of pulling people and objects down with it.

Inflate vests now. Outside, in the water.

Activate the ELT manually if it is accessible.

Stay together if you have passengers. Float on your back with knees drawn up and arms close to your sides - the Heat Escape Lessening Position (HELP) - to meaningfully extend the time before cold water robs your core temperature. Even in summer, lake water can be cold enough to impair function faster than expected. In winter or over northern water, the timeline is dramatically shorter.

Use a handheld radio if you have one. Deploy a signal mirror or any other visual signaling device. Stay visible. Help is coming because you made the call early.

What Does the Private Pilot ACS Require on Water Landings?

The ACS expects applicants to demonstrate knowledge of emergency procedures including off-airport landings, and that includes water. An oral examiner may ask about factors for selecting a landing heading, aircraft configuration for ditching, and post-landing passenger management.

The examiner is looking for systematic thinking under pressure. A complete, organized answer walks through:

  1. Wind, primary swell direction, and surface conditions - in that order - for heading selection
  2. Full flaps, minimum airspeed, nose-high attitude at touchdown
  3. Door unlatched, belts tight, mixture and fuel off, magnetos off before impact
  4. Immediate exit, inflate outside, ELT activated, stay together

AIM Section 6 covers emergency procedures including specific guidance on water landings. It is worth a dedicated reading session for any pilot who regularly flies near coastlines or large lakes.

How Do You Evaluate Your Route Before a Water Crossing?

Pull up the route on your EFB. At each point over water, estimate your glide distance from your planned altitude. A Cessna 172 glides roughly 1.5 to 2 miles for every 1,000 feet of altitude. For each segment over open water, the question is: am I within glide range of land?

If not, is there an adjustment worth making? A slightly different routing? A higher cruise altitude for the crossing? The answer may be that the crossing at that altitude is acceptable - but you should know that before departure, not when the engine goes quiet and the silence fills the cockpit.
