German occupation authorities were holding approximately 400 French Resistance fighters inside Amiens Prison. Many had been tortured. Executions were scheduled for the following morning. A request reached RAF Bomber Command through underground channels: breach the outer walls, and the prisoners could attempt to escape.
618 Squadron, flying Mosquito Mk VIs, was assigned the mission - 18 aircraft in three waves. Wave one would breach the eastern and northern walls. Percy Pickard did not make it home. His Mosquito was intercepted by a Focke-Wulf 190 at low level near the French coast on the egress. At that altitude, there was no room to recover. He was 32 years old.
The Night Fighter Crews
Most Mosquito missions were not daylight precision strikes. The Mosquito served with the RAF until 1955 - a full decade after the war ended. It flew transport runs during the Berlin Airlift. Very few survive today. Wood is vulnerable to moisture and insects in ways aluminum is not, and time has taken most of them.
