De Havilland chose the Pratt & Whitney R-985 Wasp Junior: a nine-cylinder radial producing 450 horsepower, already famous as one of the most bulletproof powerplants ever built. That was deliberate - not the newest engine, the most reliable one. In the bush, an airplane that’s 95% as good but always starts beats the fancy one that leaves you on a sandbar.
