The wing-low slip - lowering the upwind wing and holding opposite rudder - lets you touch down with the wheels rolling straight instead of skidding sideways. It’s the method FAA examiners want to see, and most botched crosswind landings come from one mistake: letting the airplane touch down while it’s still drifting.

Why Does the Wind Push My Airplane Off the Centerline?

Your airplane flies through a body of air, and that air is moving over the ground. When the wind blows across the runway, the airplane drifts with the air - sideways relative to the pavement.

Your nose can be pointed perfectly straight down the centerline and you’ll still slide off to the side, like a crab walking down a beach. That drift is the core problem every crosswind technique is trying to solve.

What’s the Difference Between the Crab and the Wing-Low Slip?

There are two ways to handle a crosswind, and each has its place.

The crab points the nose into the wind just enough that the airplane’s path over the ground stays on the centerline. It feels strange from the cockpit - you’re tracking straight while the nose is cocked to one side - but it works beautifully on the approach.

The problem is the touchdown. Your wheels have to roll straight down the runway. If you touch down still crabbed, the main tires hit the pavement moving sideways. Best case, you scare yourself. Worst case, you put a side load on the landing gear it was never designed to take.

The wing-low slip solves this by arriving at the pavement with the nose straight and the drift already killed. It’s the method the examiner wants to see on both the private and commercial checkride.

How Does the Wing-Low Slip Actually Work?

The slip does two jobs with two different controls, and here’s what trips everyone up: your hands and feet are doing opposite things for two completely separate reasons.

Job one - stop the drift with aileron. Lower the wing into the wind. If the wind is from your left, roll in left aileron and dip that left wing toward the wind. The bank creates a sideways component of lift that pushes the airplane back into the wind, canceling the drift. You’re tracking the centerline again, but now with bank instead of a crab.

Job two - keep the nose straight with rudder. The moment you bank, the airplane wants to turn. But you want to land straight ahead, so you step on the opposite rudder. Wind from the left means left aileron, right rudder.

Say it until it sticks: aileron controls the drift, rudder controls the nose.

What’s the Easiest Way to Remember Which Control Does What?

Don’t memorize it as a formula - “left this, right that.” That approach fails under pressure. Instead, fly the airplane and watch two things out the window:

  • Is the airplane drifting toward the edge of the runway? Add aileron until it stops.
  • Is the nose crooked? Add rudder until it’s straight.

You’re not solving an equation. You’re correcting two independent errors in real time, with two different hands and feet, until the airplane does what you want.

Do I Have to Switch From Crab to Slip All at Once?

No - and this is a relief for most students. You do not need to nail a dramatic crab-to-slip transition from a thousand feet.

Fly the crab down final where it’s comfortable and efficient. Then, somewhere in the last hundred feet or so as you start the roundout, smoothly transition: lower the upwind wing, feed in opposite rudder, and settle into the slip for touchdown.

Crab for the approach, slip for the landing. Both are legal, both are in the Airman Certification Standards, and you use whichever serves you in the moment.

What Does a Real Crosswind Landing Look Like, Step by Step?

Picture a runway with the wind out of the left at 15 knots, gusting to 22, about 40 degrees off the runway heading.

  1. Come down final in a comfortable crab. Airspeed controlled, tracking the centerline.
  2. Start your roundout, then lower the left wing and feed in right rudder.
  3. Settle into the slip - upwind wing down, nose straight, drift killed - and let the airplane settle onto the runway.
  4. Let the upwind main touch first. Because the left main is the low wing, it touches first, then the right main, then the nosewheel as you slow. Do not chase a flat, level touchdown. In a crosswind, the upwind wheel touching first is exactly correct - it’s the airplane telling you your correction is working.

Why Do I Have to Keep Correcting After the Wheels Are Down?

You are not done when the wheels touch. The wind doesn’t quit blowing just because you’re rolling, and your controls get less effective as you slow down.

As you decelerate, keep feeding in more aileron into the wind until, by taxi speed, it’s deflected all the way to the stop. Full aileron into the wind.

The old examiner’s rule for taxiing: climb into the wind, dive away from it. Wind from ahead and to the side - turn the yoke toward it as if climbing. Wind from behind and to the side - turn away. That’s the difference between taxiing normally and having a gust lift a wing on you.

What Is the Examiner Actually Looking For on the Checkride?

Knowing the grading criteria takes the mystery out of the ride. The examiner wants three things:

  1. A stabilized approach. Airspeed under control, on a reasonable glidepath, configured, and tracking the centerline. If you’re all over the place on final, the landing is a coin flip.
  2. The centerline - not near it, on it. They want to see the airplane touch down on or within a defined distance of the centerline, with the longitudinal axis aligned with and over the centerline. Nose straight, no drift.
  3. Crosswind correction through rollout and taxi. That aileron going to the stop as you slow. If you land beautifully and then let the yoke go neutral, you’ve shown the examiner you don’t understand why you did what you did. Fly it all the way to the tiedown.

What’s the Single Most Common Crosswind Mistake?

It’s not too little correction. It’s letting the airplane touch down while it’s still drifting.

Students get target-fixated on the flare and forget to kill the drift first. The airplane lands moving sideways, skips - or that side load hits the gear.

If you take one thing away: kill the drift first. If the airplane is still moving sideways over the pavement, it is not ready to land, no matter how close the wheels are.

When Should I Go Around Instead of Landing?

The go-around is the most important skill in this entire discussion - and it’s not a stick-and-rudder skill at all. It’s a decision.

Every airplane has a demonstrated crosswind component in its pilot’s operating handbook. Understand what that number is: it is not a limit. It’s the maximum crosswind the manufacturer’s test pilot demonstrated during certification - a skilled pilot on a good day. It’s a reference, not a promise about you, in this airplane, on a gusty afternoon.

So set your own personal number, and keep it lower when you’re new. When the wind exceeds it, or when you’ve set up twice and it just isn’t coming together, go around. Add power, fly away, and either try again or divert to a runway pointed more into the wind.

There’s no trophy for forcing a landing in a wind you’re not ready for. The examiner would far rather see a smart go-around than a salvaged bad landing. A go-around is not a failure - it’s the mark of a pilot who’s in command.

How Do I Practice Crosswind Landings Effectively?

You can use these on your very next flight:

  • Pick the right runway. If your airport has more than one, look at the wind and choose the one with the smallest crosswind component. Pilots often use the calm-wind runway out of habit while a better into-the-wind runway sits right there.
  • Practice in a wind you can handle. Skip the 20-knot day. Pick an 8–10 knot crosswind and fly slips down the length of the runway a few feet up - holding the centerline with the nose straight - without even landing. Feel how aileron kills drift and rudder holds the nose. Go around and repeat.

You’ll learn more in a half hour of that than in a month of hoping the wind stays calm.

Be patient with yourself. You’re coordinating two controls doing opposite jobs, in gusty air, close to the ground, at the moment everything feels most urgent. If it takes a while, that’s completely normal. The pilots who land beautifully in a crosswind are simply the ones who stuck with it long enough for their feet to figure it out. Trust the rudder.

The crosswind landing separates the pilot who only flies on perfect days from the one who can actually use the airplane. The day you stop fearing the crosswind is the day the whole country of airports opens up to you.
