A crosswind landing is really two skills at once: keeping the airplane tracking straight down the runway centerline, and keeping the nose pointed straight down that same centerline. The wing-low sideslip solves both - aileron into the wind holds you on the line, and opposite rudder keeps the nose straight. The single most common checkride failure is letting the airplane drift sideways before touchdown, which loads the landing gear and scrubs the tires as they touch down moving in a direction they were never built to roll.

Why Is a Crosswind Landing So Hard?

In calm air, the airplane points where it’s going and goes where it’s pointing. You never separate the two. Add a wind across the runway and those two jobs start fighting each other, and you become the referee.

The crosswind is constantly trying to push the airplane sideways, downwind. If you do nothing, you touch down drifting across the pavement.

That matters because tires are only built to roll one direction: forward. Touch down moving sideways and all that lateral energy has to go somewhere - into the gear, into the tires as a violent scrub, and in a strong case it can lift a wing or start a swerve you’ll chase down the runway with your feet. Landing sideways is how good airplanes get bent by good pilots on clear days.

Crab or Sideslip: Which Crosswind Technique Should I Use?

There are two ways to kill the drift, and the examiner cares which one you use and when.

The crab. On final, you point the nose into the wind just enough that the airplane tracks straight down the extended centerline. The airplane flies slightly sideways to its own path, like a canoe ferrying across a river - nose upstream, boat tracking straight across. It’s coordinated, the ball is centered, and it feels normal. But you cannot land in a crab in most training airplanes, because a nose cocked to one side at touchdown puts you right back into that sideways scrub.

The sideslip. You lower the wing into the wind with aileron, and at the same time push opposite rudder to keep the nose straight down the runway. The airplane is banked, the nose is straight, and the lowered upwind wing stops the downwind drift. This is the one to own before your checkride.

Aileron keeps you on the line. Rudder keeps you straight. That’s the entire crosswind landing in one sentence.

How Do Aileron and Rudder Work Together in a Crosswind?

The key insight nobody explains clearly: these two controls do two completely separate jobs, and you’re allowed to move them by different amounts. They are not connected. Don’t move the yoke and rudder together as if they were.

The wind decides the mix. More wind means more aileron into it and more rudder to hold the nose straight. If the wind lets up in the flare, ease both back out. You adjust continuously, all the way to the pavement and through the rollout. This is a conversation with the wind that doesn’t end until you’re stopped.

Walk Me Through a Crosswind Landing Step by Step

Picture a Cessna 172 on final for runway 17. The wind is 220 at 15, gusting 20 - coming from your right, a healthy crosswind with gusts on top.

  1. Down final, fly the crab. Nose pointed slightly right into the wind, airplane tracking straight toward the numbers, coordinated.
  2. In the flare, transition to the slip. Lower the right wing into the wind and feed in left rudder to swing the nose straight. You’ve traded the crab for the slip: right aileron, left rudder, right wing down, nose straight down the runway.
  3. Hold it and let it settle. Touch down on the upwind main first (the right main), then the left main, then the nosewheel.
  4. Keep flying through rollout. As you slow and the rudder loses effectiveness, feed in more aileron into the wind - until by taxi speed the yoke is deflected fully into the wind.

What Are the Most Common Crosswind Mistakes on a Checkride?

Mistake 1: Rudder without aileron. The applicant kicks the nose straight with rudder in the flare but forgets the aileron. The nose looks great for half a second, then the airplane quietly slides sideways off centerline and touches down drifting. Many pilots never feel it because the nose is straight, so it looks right over the cowling. The fix: more aileron into the wind. Drifting right? You need more left aileron.

Mistake 2: Aileron without rudder. Too much bank, not enough rudder - the nose cocks toward the low wing and you touch down crooked. Same sideways scrub, different cause. The fix: more rudder to bring the nose straight.

Mistake 3: Quitting after touchdown. The wheels are down, the pilot relaxes, the yoke drifts to neutral, and the wind - which never stopped blowing - gets under the upwind wing on rollout. In a stiff crosswind that’s an unplanned pirouette. Keep the aileron going into the wind, increasing as you slow.

Mistake 4: Not going around. You get shoved off centerline, you’re not stable, and you try to force it onto the ground instead of adding power. There is no shame in a go-around; there’s plenty in a bent airplane. An examiner won’t fail you for going around when the approach falls apart - but may fail you for pressing a bad landing you should have walked away from. Say it out loud: “Going around.” Full power, pitch for climb, flaps as briefed, and come back to try again.

How Do I Spot the Drift Before It’s Too Late?

Look far down the runway, not over the nose. Drift is invisible when you’re staring over the cowling and obvious when you’re looking at the far end - you’ll see the whole runway sliding sideways underneath you. Keep your aim point close, but pull your drift cues from way down the runway.

What Does the ACS Require for the Crosswind Landing?

The Airman Certification Standards (ACS) spell it out. For a private pilot in a typical training airplane, the examiner wants you to touch down at a proper pitch attitude, within a specified distance beyond your intended point, on the centerline - with minimum float, no side drift, and the airplane’s longitudinal axis aligned with and over the runway centerline.

Read that twice: no side drift, longitudinal axis aligned with the centerline. That’s the ACS telling you in plain language to kill the drift and keep the nose straight. The whole lesson is written into the standard.

The examiner also wants a stabilized approach and your approach airspeed held within tolerance - typically +10 / −5 knots for the private pilot - off your target speed with gust factor added.

How Much Airspeed Should I Add for Gusts?

Add half the gust factor to your approach speed. Wind at 15 gusting 20 is a 5-knot gust factor, so you carry roughly 2 to 3 extra knots. That cushion keeps a lull from dropping you out of the sky short of the runway.

Don’t overdo it. Every extra knot is extra float, and float in a crosswind gives the wind more time to push you around before the wheels are down. Examiners notice a long float - carry what you need and no more.

How Can I Get Better at Crosswind Landings?

  • Go find a crosswind on purpose. You’ll never learn this on a calm day. Pick a runway with a known crosswind component and go practice - with an instructor if you’re rusty. Comfort comes from reps and reps only.
  • Practice the slip up high first. At altitude, pick a road or section line and fly a sideslip down it - wing down, opposite rudder, nose tracking straight. Get used to that crossed-up attitude before you’re doing it three feet off the pavement.
  • Look far down the runway. It fixes half the mistakes on the list.
  • Fly it to a full stop, then keep flying it. The landing isn’t over at touchdown - it’s over at the chocks. Keep the aileron into the wind and your feet alive through rollout.
  • Know your limits and the airplane’s. Every airplane has a demonstrated crosswind component in the POH. It’s not a legal limit in most light airplanes - it’s the most crosswind a test pilot demonstrated during certification - but it’s a strong clue about where things get sporty. Set your own personal limit well inside that number, on the ground when you’re calm, not in the flare when the airplane’s dancing. If the wind is beyond what you briefed, pick a different runway, go elsewhere, or wait. The airplane will still be there tomorrow.
