The Crosswind Landing, the Wing-Low Sideslip, and the Habit of Kicking Out the Crab Too Soon

A successful crosswind landing comes down to four beats in the right order: crab down final to track the centerline, transition to a wing-low sideslip in the roundout, touch down on the upwind main wheel first, and keep flying the airplane through the rollout. The single most common mistake is kicking out the crab too soon - straightening the nose hundreds of feet up and then fighting a long, tiring sideslip all the way to the numbers. Do the transition in the flare instead, where you have the most control authority and the least time to get tired.

Why Is a Crosswind Landing So Hard?

The airplane flies through a mass of air, and that air is moving. When the wind comes from the side, the whole block of air you’re flying through slides sideways over the runway - even though the airplane is flying just fine through the air itself.

So two things happen at once. You fly forward through the air, and the air carries you sideways across the ground. If you do nothing about it, you touch down drifting sideways.

An airplane is not built to land moving sideways. The landing gear wants to roll straight ahead. When the wheels touch while the airplane is crabbing or drifting, the tires screech, the airplane lurches, and in the worst case a main gear digs in and creates a side load that can collapse a strut or start a swerve you’re now fighting on the ground.

Here’s the whole problem in one sentence: the airplane must be moving straight down the runway, and pointed straight down the runway, at the moment the wheels touch.

Crab vs. Sideslip: What’s the Difference?

There are two ways to handle a crosswind on approach, and most of the confusion lives right here.

The crab. On final, you turn the nose into the wind just enough that the airplane tracks straight down the extended centerline. The nose is cocked off to the side, but your ground track is perfect. It’s comfortable, it’s coordinated, the ball is centered, and passengers never feel a thing. The crab is a beautiful way to fly the approach.

The sideslip (wing-low). You lower the upwind wing with aileron and hold the nose straight down the runway with opposite rudder. The airplane now flies slightly sideways through the air on purpose. The lowered wing counteracts the drift, the rudder keeps the nose aligned, and you’re set up to land.

Here’s the key fact that trips people up: you can fly the whole approach in a crab, but you cannot land in a crab. At some point before the wheels touch, the airplane has to be aligned with the runway and the drift has to be killed. So every crosswind landing, no matter how you fly the approach, ends the same way - in a sideslip, with the upwind wing down, the nose straight, and one main wheel touching first.

When Should I Transition from Crab to Slip?

This is the real question, and getting it wrong is the most common mistake instructors see: students kick out the crab too soon.

Here’s what goes wrong. You’ve been taught - correctly - that you can’t land in a crab. So around 300 feet you get nervous, stomp the rudder to straighten the nose, and suddenly you have a decision you’re not ready for. You’re a quarter mile out, low but not landing, and the airplane immediately starts drifting toward the downwind side because nothing is stopping the drift anymore.

So you bank into the wind to stop it, and now you’re holding a full sideslip for fifteen or twenty seconds while you float down final. Your arms and legs get tired, you start over-controlling, and by the time you’re over the numbers the landing falls apart.

You do not have to transition early. Fly the crab down final. Stay comfortable, stay coordinated, keep tracking the centerline. Then, in the roundout - as you level off just above the runway and bleed off speed - smoothly transition to the wing-low sideslip. Lower the upwind wing, walk the nose straight with rudder, and hold it into the flare.

You’re only in the slip for a few seconds, right when it matters, right when you have the most control authority. Say it out loud in the cockpit until it’s a habit: crab down final, slip in the flare, touch down on the upwind main first.

How Do I Touch Down in a Crosswind?

In a proper crosswind landing, you do not touch down on both mains at once, and you definitely don’t land flat on all three. The order is: upwind main wheel first, then the downwind main as the airplane slows and the wing loses lift, then the nosewheel last.

Students want to level the wings just before touchdown because landing on one wheel feels wrong. Everything in your body says the wings should be flat. But if you level the wings, you stop stopping the drift, and you touch down sideways in the last half second.

You have to trust it. Hold the upwind wing down through the touchdown and land on one wheel on purpose.

What Do I Do After the Wheels Touch?

You are not done flying when the wheels touch. The airplane is still fast, the wing is still making lift, and the wind is still blowing. As you slow on the rollout, the wind has more effect on you, not less.

So keep adding aileron into the wind as you decelerate. By the time you’re at taxi speed, the aileron should be at full deflection into the wind.

There’s an old saying: climb into the wind, dive away from it - aileron into the wind on the upwind side, elevator neutral to forward as you slow. The flight controls don’t go to sleep when you land. Fly the airplane until it’s tied down.

What Does the ACS Require for Crosswind Landings?

The Airman Certification Standards (ACS) is the document your examiner grades you against. For the private pilot normal and crosswind landing task, the standard asks you to touch down at a proper pitch attitude, within 400 feet beyond a specified point, with no side drift, and with the airplane’s longitudinal axis aligned with and over the runway centerline.

Read those last two parts again: no side drift, aligned with the centerline. That’s the ACS telling you plainly that a crosswind landing that touches down crabbed or drifting is a bust - even if it’s smooth, even if nothing breaks.

The examiner is looking for specific things:

  • You maintain approach speed and control your descent.
  • You use coordinated aileron and rudder, which on a crosswind landing means the controls are cross-controlled on purpose - aileron holding the wing down, rudder holding the nose straight.
  • You touch down on the upwind wheel.
  • You keep flying it on the rollout with correct control inputs.
  • You show good judgment about whether the landing is safe at all.

Is the Demonstrated Crosswind Component a Limitation?

No - and this is a common misunderstanding. Every airplane has a demonstrated crosswind component in the pilot’s operating handbook, but it is not a limitation. It’s simply the strongest crosswind a test pilot happened to land the airplane in during certification.

It doesn’t mean the airplane can’t do more, and it doesn’t mean you can. If the wind is at or beyond that number, you are now the test pilot, and you’d better be sure of yourself.

On a checkride, the examiner would much rather hear you say “the crosswind is beyond what I’m comfortable with today - let’s use a different runway or wait it out” than watch you salvage a landing that was never going to work.

When Should I Go Around?

The go-around is the most important tool you have, and it costs nothing.

Picture it: you’re on short final, the wind gusts, the airplane balloons and drifts, you’re crossed up, out of aileron, and the centerline is sliding out from under you. This is the moment to leave - not the moment to fix it. Power up, pitch for climb, retract flaps in stages, and go around. Fly the pattern, come back, and try again with what you just learned.

There is no prize for forcing a bad crosswind landing onto the ground. A go-around isn’t a failure of the landing - it’s the successful execution of a decision. On the checkride, a well-flown go-around from a bad setup helps you, because it shows the examiner exactly the judgment they’re hoping to find.

How Can I Practice Crosswind Landings?

Three things to take on your next flight:

1. Practice the crab-then-slip sequence deliberately. On the next calm-ish day with a light crosswind, fly the approach in a crab and consciously make the transition in the roundout. Say it out loud: “Crab. Roundout. Slip. Upwind wing.” It sounds silly, but it builds the habit pattern that keeps you from kicking out early.

2. Learn the wind on the ground. Before you taxi, check the ATIS or AWOS and work out the crosswind component in your head. You don’t need perfect trigonometry - use a rule of thumb: 30 degrees off is about half the wind as crosswind, 45 degrees is about 70 percent, and 60 degrees or more means treat almost all of it as crosswind. For example, if the runway is 360 and the wind is from 040, that’s 40 degrees off the nose - a little more than half is crosswind. Do this every time until it’s automatic. The examiner will ask.

3. Practice the rollout. Everybody practices the touchdown and then relaxes. Make yourself keep adding aileron into the wind all the way to taxi speed on every landing, crosswind or not. Build the habit when it’s easy so it’s there when it’s hard.
