A crosswind landing works by using two independent controls to solve two separate problems: aileron controls your position over the centerline, and rudder controls where the nose points. You fly the approach in a crab (nose turned into the wind, airplane tracking straight), then transition to a wing-low sideslip in the flare so the upwind main wheel touches down first with no sideways drift. The landing isn’t finished at touchdown - you keep feeding in aileron until you’re parked.
Why Crosswind Landings Are So Hard
The airplane does not care which way the runway points. It only cares which way the air is moving. The runway, meanwhile, is bolted to the ground pointing exactly one direction.
That’s the entire problem. The air wants to take you one way, and the runway insists you go another. Your job is to be the negotiator in the middle who satisfies both at the exact moment the wheels touch.
There are only two tools for this, and most student trouble comes from not knowing which tool does which job.
What Is the Crab and When Do You Use It?
Picture yourself on final with the wind coming from your left, pushing you toward the right side of the runway. If you point the nose straight down the centerline, the wind carries you sideways and you drift right. Watch the runway and you’ll see it sliding across your windscreen. That drift is the enemy.
Instead, you turn the nose slightly into the wind - to the left in this case. The nose now points a little left of the runway, but the airplane as a whole tracks straight down the centerline. You’re flying sideways to the runway but perfectly aligned with your ground track. This is the crab, named for how you look from the ground: body turned one way, moving another.
The crab is comfortable and coordinated. The ball is centered, the airplane is happy, and you can hold it all the way down final without breaking a sweat. In jets and big twins, the crab is most of the story - they kick it straight at the last second and let the gear sort it out.
But in a Cessna 172 or a Piper Cherokee, you have a problem. If you touch down still in the crab - pointed left while rolling straight ahead - the wheels hit the pavement moving sideways. Landing gear hates that. It scrubs the tires, side-loads the structure, and in a taildragger it’ll try to swap the nose for the tail. The crab is a beautiful approach tool, but it cannot be how you touch down.
How Does the Wing-Low Slip Work?
The second tool is the sideslip, specifically the wing-low method. Don’t confuse it with the forward slip used to lose altitude - same family of controls, different purpose.
Here’s the part that matters: you use two different controls to do two different jobs at the same time, and they do not talk to each other.
- Aileron controls your position over the centerline.
- Rudder controls where the nose is pointed.
Say it in your head: aileron for position, rudder for alignment.
Same scenario, wind from the left. You roll in a little left aileron, into the wind. The airplane banks gently, and that bank stops the drift, holding you over the centerline. But the nose now wants to turn left with the bank, and you don’t want that - so you push in right rudder to keep the nose pointed straight down the runway.

Now you’re flying down final with the upwind wing low, the nose straight, and the airplane tracking dead center. If a gust pushes you right, add a little more aileron into it. If it eases and you slide upwind, take a little out. You’re constantly adjusting aileron to stay on centerline and rudder to keep the nose straight. It’s a living, breathing thing - not a position you set and freeze.
How Do I Fly a Complete Crosswind Approach?
Here’s the whole approach, start to finish, so you can feel the rhythm.
- Roll out on final in the crab. Say the wind is from the left at 15 knots, gusting 20. Nose cocked left, tracking straight, ball centered. Use this stable time to nail your aim point and airspeed while the crab does the easy work.
- Transition in the roundout. This is the moment students rush. Somewhere in the flare, smoothly swap crab for slip: lower the upwind wing with aileron while feeding in rudder to straighten the nose down the runway. Crab out, slip in. The airplane goes from flying sideways-but-level to straight-but-banked.
- Hold it off and keep flying. In a strong crosswind, don’t touch down on all three wheels at once, and never touch down flat. Let the upwind main wheel - the one on the side the wind’s coming from - kiss the pavement first.
- Settle in sequence: upwind main, then downwind main, then the nosewheel as the elevator loses authority.
Why the upwind wheel first? Because that wing is already low - it’s where the airplane naturally wants to settle when you’re holding the slip. Fighting that to force a level touchdown is exactly how you end up drifting at the worst possible second.
Why the Landing Isn’t Over at Touchdown
This is the part almost nobody talks about, and it wrecks more airplanes than the landing itself: you are not done when the wheels are down.
Every instinct says relax. Don’t. The wind is still blowing, and now you’re slow - which means your controls are getting mushy right as the wind’s relative influence is growing. As you slow on the rollout, keep rolling in more and more aileron into the wind. By taxi speed, the yoke or stick should be deflected full aileron into the wind.
Memorize the old saying: “Climb into the wind, dive away from it.”
- With a headwind component, turn the ailerons up into the wind, like you’re climbing into it.
- With a tailwind component, turn them away, like diving away from it - and use elevator to keep the wind from getting under the tail.
This is how you stop a gust from picking up a wing and flipping you while you’re just trying to reach the ramp. The landing is over when you’ve shut down at the tiedown.
What Are the Most Common Crosswind Mistakes?
- Kicking the crab out too early. Sitting in a slip for all of final burns your attention fighting the airplane. Stay in the crab until the flare and let it be easy as long as possible.
- Trying to fly level and land flat in a strong wind. You drift, touch down with side load, and skip sideways. Let the upwind wing stay low and the upwind wheel touch first. Trust it.
- Relaxing the controls after touchdown. Keep flying the airplane on the ground.
- Not knowing your numbers. Every airplane has a demonstrated crosswind component in the POH - often around 15 knots for a Cessna 172. It’s not a legal limit or a structural wall; it’s the strongest crosswind a test pilot demonstrated during certification. But if you’re low-time and the crosswind is well past that number, the wind is telling you something. There’s no shame in choosing a different runway, diverting, or waiting for the wind to lie down.
What Does the Examiner Look For on the Checkride?
The Airman Certification Standards spell out exactly what the examiner wants:
- A stabilized approach at the right airspeed, usually no more than the recommended speed plus or minus 5 knots.
- A touchdown at proper pitch attitude, beyond and within a set distance of a specified point.
- No drift, with the airplane’s longitudinal axis aligned with the centerline - that’s the crab and slip described in plain regulatory language.
- Crosswind correction and directional control maintained throughout the rollout - that’s the aileron you keep feeding in. The examiner is watching your hands after you land.
What’s the Best Way to Practice Crosswind Landings?
The best drill is low approaches on a steady (not howling) crosswind day. Don’t do full landings at first.
Come down final in the crab, transition to the slip in the flare, and fly the length of the runway about five to ten feet off the pavement - holding the upwind wheel down toward the centerline, nose straight, wing low. Then add power and go around. Repeat.
This takes the hard part, the touchdown, off the table and gives you the whole runway to feel the aileron and rudder working against each other. You’ll feel the airplane settle onto that low wheel and learn exactly how much rudder keeps the nose straight. Ten of those teach you more than fifty rushed full-stops.
