Learn the crab, the wing-low slip, and the aileron-into-the-wind rollout that separates confident crosswind pilots from calm-air landers.

A crosswind landing requires two tools working in sequence: the crab to track the centerline down final, and the wing-low slip to align the airplane straight for touchdown. You land on the upwind main wheel first with the fuselage aligned over the centerline, then progressively add aileron into the wind during the rollout to keep a gust from lifting the upwind wing. Master those three moments - wheel first, nose straight, aileron on the ground - and you’ve flown a crosswind landing to the standard your examiner is watching for.

Why Are Crosswind Landings So Hard?

It isn’t the strength of the wind. A crosswind is hard because it asks you to do two contradictory things at once: keep the airplane tracking straight down the centerline while also keeping the nose pointed straight down the runway.

In calm air, those are the same thing. In a crosswind, they are not - and your brain wants to pick one job and ignore the other.

Picture runway 27 with the wind 220 at 15, gusting 21. That’s a left crosswind blowing mostly across the nose. If you point the nose straight at the runway and do nothing, the moving air mass pushes the whole airplane sideways and you drift off the centerline. You didn’t fly off it. You got blown off it.

To fix that, you have two techniques, and the Airman Certification Standards (ACS) expect you to understand both, because each solves the problem in a different phase of the approach.

What Is the Crab, and Why Can’t You Land in It?

The crab is simple and efficient. You turn the whole airplane slightly into the wind so the nose points a little upwind of the centerline - just enough. The airplane now flies slightly sideways relative to the runway, but its actual ground track stays straight down the centerline.

Think of swimming across a river. You don’t aim at the dock; you aim upstream and the current carries you there. The nose points into the wind, and the ground track stays true.

The crab is comfortable. The airplane is coordinated, the ball is centered, and on a long final in a strong crosswind, it’s the relaxed, natural way to fly the approach.

But you cannot land in a crab. If you touch down with the nose cocked to the side, your wheels are pointed one way and moving another. The instant the rubber grabs pavement, the airplane swings hard to align the fuselage with its direction of travel. That’s a side load your landing gear was never designed to absorb - ugly at best, off the side of the runway at worst.

The crab gets you down final. It cannot be how you touch down.

How Do I Fly the Wing-Low Slip?

The wing-low method, or slip, is simply you manually splitting those two jobs apart and handling each with a different control:

  • Aileron controls your position over the runway.
  • Rudder controls where the nose is pointed.

That’s the whole secret. For the first time in your training, your hands and feet are doing two completely different jobs and are not moving together.

Here’s how to build it, using a left crosswind (wind from your left):

  1. Stop the drift with aileron. The wind is pushing you right, so lower the left wing - bank gently into the wind. That bank makes the airplane want to slide left, back toward the centerline, canceling the wind’s push. You’re holding your position with aileron, not turning.

  2. Hold the nose straight with rudder. Banking left alone would start a left turn and swing the nose off the runway. So you add right rudder - “top rudder,” opposite the bank. That holds the nose straight down the centerline even with the wing down.

Now the airplane is crossed up: left wing low, right rudder in, nose tracking straight, fuselage aligned with the runway. You hold that all the way down, through the flare, and onto the pavement.

Why Does the Slip Feel So Wrong?

Because it’s uncoordinated - and it’s supposed to be. The ball is out of center on purpose. You’ll feel a slight sideways slide in the seat, and every instinct your instructor drilled into you about centering the ball will scream that this is wrong.

It isn’t. In the slip, coordinated flight goes out the window because you are deliberately crossing the controls to make the airplane do two jobs at once. Let it feel weird. Weird is correct here.

How Much Bank and Rudder Do I Use?

Exactly as much as the wind demands - and the wind is never constant. The real skill the examiner is watching for is constant adjustment.

A gust hits from the left and you drift right, so you add a little more left aileron to hold position and feed in a little more right rudder to keep the nose straight. The gust dies and you take some of both back out. You work the airplane the entire way down with little corrections: aileron for where you are, rudder for where the nose points.

If you’re flying down final in a crosswind with your feet flat on the floor and your hands still, you’re not flying a crosswind. You’re just watching one happen to you.

What’s the One Thing Applicants Forget on Rollout?

Aileron into the wind. This trips up more applicants than any other single item.

You held the slip, touched down on the upwind main first, then the other main, then the nose. You’re rolling out and every fiber of your being wants to relax and let go. Do not let go of the controls.

You’ve slowed from flying speed to rolling on the ground, but the wind hasn’t stopped. That 15 gusting 21 is still hammering you from the left - except now you’re a slow, light airplane with almost no aerodynamic authority left. A gust can pick up the upwind wing and start to flip you. That’s a wingtip strike, and it happens on the rollout, after the hard part is supposedly over, to pilots who mentally clocked out at touchdown.

So keep flying the airplane as you slow. Progressively add more aileron into the wind until, at taxi speed, the yoke is turned hard over into the wind - full deflection - holding that upwind wing down.

There’s an old rule for taxiing in wind: “Climb into the wind, dive away from it.” When the wind is ahead of you, aileron into it and yoke back, like you’re climbing. When it’s behind you, aileron away and yoke forward. But on the crosswind rollout, keep it simple: turn into the wind and hold it there.

How Do I Transition From Crab to Slip?

Many students crab beautifully down final and then forget to transition in the flare - touching down sideways, lurching, and taxiing back convinced they have no talent. They have plenty of talent. They just skipped the transition.

You don’t have to hold a full slip for a mile. A cleaner path for many students:

  1. Crab down final, relaxed and coordinated, all the way to short final.
  2. In the last hundred feet or so, before the flare, smoothly transition: take out the crab with rudder to straighten the nose down the runway, and at the same time lower the upwind wing with aileron to stop the drift.

You kick it straight and lower the wing in one smooth, blended motion. Crab down final, slip to land. For a lot of students, that’s easier than holding a full slip the whole way.

When Is the Crosswind Too Strong to Land?

Every airplane has a maximum demonstrated crosswind component, listed in the pilot’s operating handbook (POH). Be precise about what that number means: it is not a legal limit. It’s the strongest crosswind a test pilot demonstrated during certification - a demonstration, not a regulation. But it’s an excellent clue about the airplane’s capability, and about yours.

The airplane will also tell you directly. If you’re in the slip with your foot on the floor - out of rudder - and the nose still won’t come straight, the crosswind is too strong for this configuration right now.

That’s not failure; that’s information. Go around. Try less flaps for a little more speed and rudder authority, or find a runway pointed more into the wind. Making that call isn’t weakness - it’s command. The wing-low slip has an advantage here: it gives you an early, honest answer to the question “Do I have enough rudder?”

What Does the Examiner Want on the Checkride?

On the private pilot checkride, the crosswind landing is a required ACS task with specific standards. The examiner wants you to:

  • Touch down on the upwind main wheel first, at the proper pitch attitude, within a specified distance of a point on the runway.
  • Keep the longitudinal axis aligned with and over the centerline - nose straight, tracking true.
  • Maintain crosswind correction and directional control throughout the rollout.

Read that last part again. Throughout the rollout. The ACS specifically calls out the thing everybody forgets - the examiner is watching your ailerons on the ground.

Boiled down, it’s three things: upwind wheel first, fuselage straight at touchdown, and aileron coming in progressively as you slow. Nail those and you’ve flown a crosswind landing to standard.

How Can I Practice Crosswind Landings?

Go find a crosswind on purpose. On a breezy day with your instructor, when the wind is off the runway a little, don’t avoid it - that’s the day to practice.

Fly the approach and talk it out loud: “Aileron for my position. Rudder for my nose.” Naming the job with the control keeps your hands and feet from defaulting back to moving together.

Then try a drill that’s pure gold: ask your instructor to let you fly the length of the runway in a slip, ten or twenty feet up, holding the airplane straight down the centerline without landing. Wing low, top rudder, nose straight, tracking the line. You’re not trying to land - you’re teaching your feet and hands to disagree in a controlled way. That single exercise will do more for your crosswind landings than a hundred greasers in calm air.

The wind is not your enemy. Once you understand it, the crosswind is just a problem with a known solution - and that solution lives in your hands and your feet.
