One by one the aircraft were crashed, scrapped, converted into oddball freighters, or left to rot. A couple even ended their days as a desert lodge. By the 1970s, only one complete, original Stratoliner remained in the entire world.

The Story of the Clipper Flying Cloud

The lone survivor was the very first aircraft Pan American ever took delivery of, named the Clipper Flying Cloud. After flying for Pan Am and serving in the war, she passed through a string of owners and eventually sat forgotten in the Arizona desert, her aluminum slowly weathering in the sun.

The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum took title to her, and in the 1990s an agreement was struck: Boeing itself would restore the Clipper Flying Cloud to flying condition and bring her home to Seattle, the city where she was born.

A crew of Boeing retirees - men who had spent careers building 707s and 747s - volunteered their evenings and weekends to nurse the ancient aircraft back to life. They stripped her to the bones and rebuilt every system: the four radial engines, the pressurization gear, miles of wiring and plumbing. The Elliott Bay Ditching of March 2002

On March 28, 2002, the restored Clipper Flying Cloud went up on a test flight out of Boeing Field with four crew aboard. On the return approach, a fuel management problem - accounts point to running tanks dry - caused the engines to quit. Over Elliott Bay, on final for the field, the aircraft ran out of power with nowhere to go but the water.

The pilot did exactly what a pilot is trained to do: he flew the airplane all the way down. He ditched gear up, wings level, and set the irreplaceable machine onto Elliott Bay so gently that all four crew climbed out alive. No one died and no one was seriously injured.

The airplane, however, sank - nose down with the tail in the air, saltwater flooding every corner. Saltwater is the single most corrosive threat an aircraft can face, seeping into every seam and rivet and never stopping.

How the Stratoliner Was Raised and Rebuilt Again

Most people would have written her off. This crew did not.

Within days, they brought out a crane barge and lifted the Clipper Flying Cloud off the bottom of the bay. Then they did the one thing that gave her a fighting chance: they flushed her with fresh water immediately, racing to wash the salt out before the chemistry could do its worst.

Then the same volunteers who had already given a decade to the aircraft started over. They tore her down a second time, corroded piece by corroded piece, and rebuilt the last Stratoliner in the world for the second time in two years. The second restoration took about a year. By the summer of 2003, the Clipper Flying Cloud was whole and airworthy again, and this time she was flown safely across the country to Washington and delivered to the Smithsonian.

Where to See the Last Stratoliner Today

The only Boeing 307 Stratoliner left on Earth is on permanent display at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles Airport in Virginia. Visitors can stand directly beneath her fat, graceful silver fuselage, still riding on those unmistakable B-17 wings.
