Instead, Louise Thaden and Blanche Noyes flew a stock Staggerwing to outright victory, becoming the first women to win the Bendix. They beat the field in an airplane a businessman could have flown to a meeting the next morning. The win put Beechcraft on the map and proved the elegant biplane could genuinely fly.

The Staggerwing Goes to War - and Reaches the End of the Line

When World War II arrived, the military pressed the Staggerwing into service as a fast utility transport, designating it the UC-43 Traveler. It hauled officers and priority cargo around the world, and the British flew it as well. The elegant civilian speedster traded leather and mohair for olive drab.

But the war also ended the Staggerwing’s era. During the conflict, Beech developed the Model 18 “Twin Beech” - an all-metal, twin-engine, modern design. After the war, the future belonged to aluminum, twin engines, and tricycle gear. The fabric-covered biplane, however gorgeous, was yesterday’s airplane. The last Staggerwing left Wichita in 1948.

Why Are Staggerwings Still Flying Today?
