An AIRMET (Airman’s Meteorological Information) is a standing forecast warning about weather hazardous to light aircraft and less-experienced pilots, but not severe enough to qualify as a SIGMET. There are exactly three: AIRMET Sierra covers IFR conditions and mountain obscuration, AIRMET Tango covers turbulence and strong winds, and AIRMET Zulu covers icing and freezing levels. Learn all three and you have a complete checklist for the invisible hazards that can ruin a flight.

What Is an AIRMET?

Think of an AIRMET as a heads-up about weather that will ruin your day without ever making the evening news. It flags conditions dangerous to smaller airplanes - the Cessna 172 or Piper Cherokee flying a nice cross-country - that fall short of truly severe weather.

Its bigger, meaner cousin is the SIGMET (Significant Meteorological Information), reserved for severe conditions. But the AIRMET is the one you’ll encounter again and again in routine briefings.

There are three AIRMETs - Sierra, Tango, and Zulu - and each covers a different way the sky can hurt a light airplane. Below, we break down what each one is telling you and what to do about it.

What Does AIRMET Sierra Mean?

AIRMET Sierra covers two things: IFR (instrument flight) conditions and mountain obscuration. It’s the low-visibility, can’t-see-the-ground, can’t-see-the-ridge warning.

When Sierra is issued for IFR conditions, forecasters expect - over a broad area - ceilings below 1,000 feet, visibility below 3 miles, or both. For a VFR pilot, that is the wall. It’s the weather that keeps you on the ground, and the weather that VFR pilots fly into and don’t come out of.

Here’s the key insight: a Sierra for IFR conditions does not mean the whole area is socked in. It means conditions somewhere in that area, at some point in that window, are expected to drop below VFR minimums. It’s a heads-up, not a verdict.

Your job is to cross-check whether the part of the sky you care about - your route, altitude, and timeframe - will be the bad part. Confirm it against actual observations: the METARs, the destination forecast, and the Graphical Forecasts for Aviation (GFA) from the FAA. Sierra tells you where to look; the other products tell you how bad it really is.

The second half of Sierra, mountain obscuration, is the one that quietly kills people. It means peaks and ridges are hidden by cloud, fog, precipitation, or haze - even when valley visibility is a perfectly legal five or six miles. The terrain you have to fly over is wearing a hat of cloud.

Picture following a valley that keeps rising toward a pass while the clouds sit at a fixed altitude. The gap closes like a pair of scissors. That’s the “sucker hole” that talks a reasonable pilot into an unreasonable canyon.

How Do I Handle AIRMET Sierra on a Mountain Crossing?

Treat a Sierra for mountain obscuration as a hard prompt to have an out. Specifically:

  • Plan a higher route or a different pass.
  • Set a go/no-go time before you launch.
  • Identify a turnaround point so you can reverse course while you still have room to turn around.

An examiner isn’t looking for you to cancel every time Sierra is out. They want you to articulate what it means and how you’d manage it.

What Does AIRMET Tango Mean?

AIRMET Tango is for turbulence - specifically moderate turbulence over a wide area. It’s slightly broader than the name suggests, also covering sustained strong surface winds and low-level wind shear.

The word that trips up students is “moderate.” In an airliner, moderate turbulence is coffee sloshing in the cup. In your training airplane, it’s your head hitting the ceiling, your passenger reaching for the bag, and you fighting to hold altitude within standards. Turbulence is defined by what it does to the aircraft, and a light airplane is a much smaller target for the same bumps.

When Tango is out, ask two questions:

  1. Is it comfort, or is it control? A rough ride is miserable but survivable. Turbulence severe enough that you’re struggling to maintain control - or risk exceeding the airplane’s limits - is a different animal.
  2. What’s causing it? Tango from a fast-moving front behaves differently than Tango from afternoon desert heating or wind ripping across a mountain range. That last one - mechanical turbulence and mountain wave on the lee side of the ridges - can be genuinely violent close to the terrain.

How Do I Fly Safely When AIRMET Tango Is Active?

The practical takeaways with Tango are airspeed and timing:

  • Slow to maneuvering speed. This is the speed in your handbook that protects the airframe from an abrupt gust load.
  • Time your flight around the heating. Convective turbulence from daytime heating is often worst in the afternoon and calms by evening and early morning. Sometimes the whole answer is leaving at 7 a.m. instead of 2 p.m. - same trip, half the bruises.
  • Brief for low-level wind shear. Tango includes sudden changes in wind speed or direction close to the ground, which matter most on approach and departure when you’re slow and low. If non-convective wind shear is forecast, expect the airspeed to move on you, carry a little extra speed, and have a plan to go around.

What Does AIRMET Zulu Mean?

AIRMET Zulu covers icing and freezing levels. For pilots in airplanes not approved for flight into known icing - which is most of us - Zulu is arguably the most important of the three, because ice is the hazard where a light airplane has the fewest options.

Zulu tells you where structural icing is forecast and the altitude of the freezing level. Ice needs two ingredients: visible moisture (cloud or precipitation) and a temperature at or below freezing. No cloud, no ice, even in the cold. But cold cloud means ice building on the wings, prop, and antennas - changing the shape of your wing and adding weight at the same time. It doesn’t take much to matter.

How Do I Use the Freezing Level in an AIRMET Zulu?

Treat the freezing level as your escape plan drawn as an altitude. If ice is forecast in the clouds and the freezing level is at, say, 9,000 feet, then flying at 6,000 - below the freezing level and below the cloud bases - keeps you out of the ice.

If you’re above it and start picking up ice, descending into warmer air is your way out, as long as you have terrain clearance to descend into. Zulu turns icing from a vague fear into a number you can plan around: Where’s the freezing level, where are the clouds, and where’s my warm air?

Be honest with yourself. For an airplane with no ice protection, the correct response to a real Zulu along your route, in the clouds, is very often simply “not today.” That’s not weakness - it’s a pilot who understands that ice is one of the few things a light airplane cannot fight its way out of. There’s no shame in the airplane staying in the hangar. There’s a lot of shame, and worse, in trying to climb through an icing layer and finding it thicker than the airplane’s ability to climb.

How Do I Actually Use AIRMETs in a Weather Briefing?

AIRMETs are part of every standard briefing, whether you call Flight Service or pull them up yourself. The common mistake is treating them as either invisible or terrifying - skipping past the coded text, or canceling a flight without checking whether the AIRMET even touches your route.

The better habit is to ask four quick questions about any AIRMET:

  1. Location - Does it cover where I’m going?
  2. Time - Does it cover when I’m going?
  3. Altitude - Does it cover the altitudes I’ll be flying?
  4. Trend - Is it getting better or worse over my window?

An AIRMET Zulu for icing at 18,000 feet does not touch your VFR cross-country at 5,500. An AIRMET Sierra that expires two hours before you take off and isn’t being reissued is telling you the weather is improving.

You can watch whether a Sierra area is sliding toward your destination or away from it - far better than holding a text description of a polygon in your head. Then confirm against the METARs and terminal forecasts for the airports you actually care about.

A Real-World Example: Planning a 90-Mile Cross-Country

Say you’re planning a 90-mile cross-country to an airport with a great diner. The briefing shows:

  • AIRMET Sierra for IFR conditions along the first 30 miles, valid until 1500 Zulu.
  • AIRMET Tango for moderate turbulence below 8,000 feet, region-wide, all day.
  • No Zulu - freezing level up at 12,000 feet, well above anywhere you’re going.

Walk it through. Set the Zulu aside - the freezing level is way up high, no icing concern for a low VFR flight.

The Sierra covers your first 30 miles, but only until 1500 Zulu. When you check the METARs along that stretch, ceilings are already lifting through 3,000 and climbing. The trend is your friend - that Sierra is describing weather clearing out ahead of your departure. So you plan to depart a little after 1500 Zulu, recheck those METARs before you go, and keep a turnaround point in mind for the first leg in case the improvement stalls.

The Tango is the one that actually shapes your flight. To manage moderate turbulence below 8,000 all day from daytime heating, you: go early rather than late to beat the afternoon bumps; route to stay off the lee side of the ridge line where mechanical turbulence lives; slow to maneuvering speed if it gets rough; and brief your passenger honestly that it might be bumpy - here’s the bag, it’s normal, we’re not in danger, just uncomfortable.

That’s the whole game. You didn’t ignore the AIRMETs, and you didn’t let them scare you off a flyable day. You read each one, asked location, time, altitude, and trend, and built a flight around what they were actually telling you.

When AIRMETs Become SIGMETs

When weather crosses from hazardous into severe, the AIRMET gives way to the SIGMET - for severe turbulence, severe icing, and a special category called the Convective SIGMET for thunderstorms, embedded storms, and squall lines.

If you ever see a Convective SIGMET across your route, that is not a plan-around - it’s a full stop and rethink. Thunderstorms are in a class by themselves, and no light airplane belongs anywhere near one.
