If it drifts up, you’re landing short; if it slides down, you’re going long; if it stays parked, you have a stabilized approach. Master this single visual cue and landings stop being a mystery and become a repeatable skill.

What Is the Aiming Point on Final Approach?

When you descend toward the ground on a stable, straight path, there is exactly one point in front of you that does not move in your windscreen. Everything short of that point slides down and under you. Everything beyond it drifts up and away.

That one still spot just sits there, growing larger as you close in. The spot that doesn’t move is where you’re going. That’s not a metaphor - it’s geometry.

Glider pilots live and die by it. Every pilot who has ever put an airplane down without an engine has used it, whether or not they knew the name for it. On a normal day in the pattern, it’s the single best tool you have for flying a consistent approach.

Aiming Point vs. Touchdown Point: What’s the Difference?

Students constantly smash these two ideas together, and keeping them separate is where the whole technique starts to work.

The aiming point is where the airplane is pointed - that stationary spot. If you flew straight into the ground with no flare, that’s where the wheels would hit. Many runways have a painted marker for it: two large white rectangles a few hundred feet down from the threshold, called the aiming point marking, placed there for exactly this reason.

The touchdown point is where you actually put the wheels down after you round out, flare, and let the airplane settle. Because you bleed off that last bit of altitude in the flare - floating just above the surface while speed washes off - your touchdown point is always a little beyond your aiming point.

This is why aiming at the numbers backfires. A student aims at the threshold, does a normal flare, floats past the numbers, and lands long anyway - frustrated, because they were aiming right at their target. But you were never going to land where you aimed. You were going to land beyond it.

How Do I Know If I’m Landing Short or Long?

Once you’re configured and trimmed on final, find the spot on the runway that isn’t moving in your windscreen. Everything below it in your sight picture is sliding down. Find the point where the motion stops. Then read it:

  • If the stationary spot drifts up the windscreen (toward you and up), you’re landing short. Your path is sinking toward ground short of the runway. Add power or shallow the descent now, before it gets worse.
  • If the spot slides down the windscreen (away and down), you’re going long. You’re high and carrying deep into the runway. Reduce power, add drag, steepen it up.
  • If the spot sits rock solid - not climbing, not falling - that’s a stabilized approach. Hold that picture and fly it all the way to the roundout.

Here’s the part worth internalizing: when your instructor calls “you’re low” or “add a little power,” they aren’t psychic. They’re watching that spot move in the windscreen. The moment you learn to see it yourself, you stop needing someone in the right seat to call it - and that’s a huge step toward flying solo with confidence.

How Does the Aiming Point Help in an Engine-Out Landing?

This same skill might save your life. When the engine quits, you’re a glider whether you signed up for it or not. You have best glide speed, a field picked out, and one job: make the field. The tool that tells you whether you’ll make it is the exact same aiming point picture.

Pick your spot in the field and watch it in the windscreen:

  • Creeping up toward you? You’ll land short - you won’t make it. Pick something closer, right now, don’t wait.
  • Sliding down and away? You’ll overshoot - you have energy to spare. Add a slip, S-turn, or extend to bleed it off.
  • Sitting still? You’ll make your spot. Leave it alone and fly the airplane.

That’s not a different skill from landing at your home field - it’s the same skill. Which is exactly why every normal landing you fly is a rehearsal for the one where it counts. The pilots who make the field when the engine quits are almost always the ones who understood the aiming point on thousands of ordinary approaches first.

What Are the Common Mistakes With the Aiming Point?

Fixation. A student finds the aiming point, locks on, and stares a hole through it - then botches the flare because their eyes never transitioned. The aiming point is a final approach tool. As you cross the threshold and start the roundout, your eyes need to come up and down the runway toward the far end so you can judge height for the flare. Chasing it. A new pilot sees the spot drift, panics, and yanks in a big correction - overshoots the other way, yanks again, and pogo-sticks down final in a pilot-induced oscillation. A red-over-white on the PAPI and a stable spot in the windscreen agreeing with each other is an approach you can trust. The aiming point is one input. Cross-check it.

Putting It All Together: Aim, Hold, Then Look Up and Land

Carry this one picture into the cockpit:

  1. Turn final. Get configured, trimmed, and speed nailed.
  2. Find the spot that isn’t moving. Slide it to where you want it - a few hundred feet down the runway, off the aiming point marking - knowing your wheels will kiss down a bit beyond it after the flare.
  3. Hold that spot still with small corrections all the way down.
  4. As the runway rises to meet you, bring your eyes up off the spot and down the runway, round out, and let her settle onto the touchdown point you planned.

Aim. Hold. Then look up and land.

This is hard, and it takes reps - landings where you float, landings where you drop it in, landings your instructor talks you through the whole way down. That’s normal. Nobody arrives at a good landing sight picture in their fifth hour. But this one concept, more than almost anything else, turns landings from a mystery into a skill that pays you back for the rest of your flying life.
