What Is the Aim Point on Final?

Your aim point is the single spot in your windscreen that stays motionless during a stabilized descent. It isn’t rising, it isn’t falling - it just sits in the glass and grows larger as you close on it.

Here’s the physics, kept plain. When you descend toward the runway, every object out ahead of you moves in your field of view. The near end of the runway slides down and disappears under the nose quickly. The far end, and the trees past the field, creep upward. Somewhere in between, one point holds perfectly still.

That still point is where your flight path is taking you. If nothing changes, that is the piece of earth your airplane will arrive at.

This isn’t folklore. Glider pilots rely on it, test pilots use it, and it’s the same principle a naval aviator uses coming aboard the carrier. It works exactly the same way in a Cessna 172, a Piper Cherokee, or whatever you trained in.

How Do I Find My Aim Point on Approach?

On final, find the point that isn’t moving. Then ask one question: Is that point where I actually want to touch down?

Everything you need is already in the windscreen. You just have to train your eye to read relative motion - to see what rises, what falls, and what holds still.

Once you find the still point, you have a single, clear job: keep it nailed to the spot you chose. Instead of reacting to the whole picture at once, you fly one point. The approach gets quiet and the airplane settles.

How Does the Aim Point Tell Me I’m Landing Short or Long?

The motionless spot tells you the truth about your flight path before the numbers ever do. It fails in exactly two ways.

You’re low and dragging it in. The point holding still is short of the runway - out in the approach lights, in the field before the threshold, or on top of a fence you’d rather not discuss. Every object beyond it, including the runway you want, is drifting up and away in the windscreen. When the runway numbers are rising in your view, you are sinking below the path and you will land short. The fix: add power, arrest the sink, and walk the aim point up to where it belongs.

You’re high and hot. The frozen point is way down the runway, past the thousand-foot markers, halfway to the far end. Everything near you - the threshold, the numbers, the first third of the pavement - is sliding down and vanishing under the nose. When the near end of the runway is dropping away beneath you, you are high and going long. Forcing it down onto the numbers now will either drive it into the ground or leave you floating half the runway trying to bleed off energy.

The mental shift is this: you stop flying the runway, and you start flying a point.

Is My Aim Point the Same as My Touchdown Point?

No. Your aim point and your touchdown point are two different spots, and the difference between them is the flare.

Your aim point is where the flight path would carry the wheels if you flew straight into the ground with no round out. Your touchdown point is a little beyond that, because in the last few feet you break the descent, raise the nose, hold it off, and the airplane floats forward before the mains settle.

So if you aim right at the numbers, you’ll typically touch down a couple hundred feet past them. Good pilots account for this. They aim at a spot short of where they actually want the wheels, knowing the flare will carry them the rest of the way.

How Do I Use the Aim Point on a Short Field?

On a long runway with room to spare, the gap between aim point and touchdown point is academic. On a short field, it’s everything.

Picture 2,200 feet of grass in the backcountry with trees on the approach end. Now the difference between aiming at the threshold and aiming 300 feet down the runway is the difference between stopping with room to spare and a very bad conversation with the far tree line.

On a short field, pick your aim point deliberately and protect it with power and pitch. Do not let it drift deep. If that spot starts sliding down under the nose, you’re going long - and on a short field, going long is how people get hurt.

What Does the ACS Say About the Aim Point?

Pull up the Airman Certification Standards (ACS) for the private pilot, normal approach and landing task. The examiner wants you to maintain a stabilized approach and a specified airspeed, and to touch down at a specified point. In the current standard, that’s within 400 feet beyond a point you selected. That’s not much runway.

Think about what the examiner is actually grading. It isn’t whether you can smash a greaser. It’s whether you can put the airplane where you said you’d put it - on speed, under control, every time.

The aim point is the single best tool you have to do that. When your aim point stays fixed on your chosen spot the whole way down final, you are flying the stabilized approach the ACS asks for. You’re demonstrating command of your flight path, not luck.

A Scenario to Fly in Your Head

You’re on a two-mile final, VFR, calm day, coming into a 3,000-foot runway. You’re a touch high with a little extra speed. You look out and find the point that isn’t moving - it’s sitting about a third of the way down the runway. The numbers and threshold are drifting down and sliding under your nose.

That tells you you’re going long. Left alone, the airplane wants to touch down about where that frozen point sits, then float even further in the flare - maybe two-thirds of the way down before the wheels chirp. That’s tight.

So you fix it. Small power reduction. Let the nose stay where it is - don’t dive - and watch the aim point walk backward up the runway toward the numbers. When it settles onto the spot you want, stabilize there: pitch for your speed, power to hold the point. Now you know, not hope, where you’re going to land.

And the honest part: if the aim point won’t come back where you want it - if you’re still high and fast and running out of runway in the windscreen - that is not a landing to salvage. That’s a go-around. Full power, pitch up, fly away, come back and do it again. The best pilots go around more often than the worst ones, not less.

Two Ways to Practice the Aim Point

A tip you don’t practice is just trivia. Try these on a calm day.

First, just observe. Out on final, before you’re low, consciously choose the piece of pavement you want. Then find the still point in the windscreen and compare the two. Is the still point on your spot, short of it, or beyond it? You don’t have to correct anything the first few times - just train your eye to see what rises, what falls, and what holds.

Then start using it. Make small corrections to walk the frozen point onto your chosen spot and keep it there. Power moves the aim point. Pitch flies the airspeed. Keep those two separated in your mind and the approach gets simple.

Where Should I Look During the Flare?

Once the aim point is locked, change your eyes for the last phase. As you cross the threshold and begin the round out, shift your gaze down to the far end of the runway - not the pavement rushing up in front of you, but the far end.

That long view is what lets you judge your height for the flare, and it’s why landings smooth out the moment you stop staring at the ground. Remember the two jobs for two phases: aim point on final, long eyes in the flare.
