Alvin Melvin Johnston was born January 2, 1914, in Emporia, Kansas. The cowboy hat, bolo tie, and unhurried swagger came with the man regardless of geography.

He grew up absorbed by airplanes, learned to fly young, and paid for lessons the way young men always did in those years - sweeping hangars, fueling aircraft, staying close to the machines. During the war he went to work at Bell Aircraft in Buffalo, test-flying the P-39 Airacobra and the P-63 King Cobra, aircraft with reputations for punishing overconfident pilots. Johnston understood them.

Boeing hired him in 1948 at age 34. By 1955 he was the company’s chief of flight test, and by virtually every account from those who flew alongside him, one of the finest stick-and-rudder pilots alive.
