Positioning your flight controls correctly while taxiing in wind comes down to one rule: climb into a headwind, dive away from a tailwind. For any wind coming from ahead of you, turn the yoke toward the wind and hold it back; for any wind from behind you, turn the yoke away from the wind and push it forward. This keeps gusts from getting under your wings or tail and tipping a light airplane.

Why Do Flight Control Positions Matter While Taxiing?

Your airplane doesn’t stop being an airplane just because you’re on the pavement. The wings are still wings, air is still moving over them, and a strong enough wind - especially a gust - can generate real lift and real force on your control surfaces while you’re taxiing.

Left unmanaged, a strong quartering gust can lift a wing, push a tail around, or in a bad case tip a light airplane up onto a wingtip. It happens most often to tailwheel airplanes and to high-wing trainers with a lot of side area, but no airplane is completely immune.

The good news: your ailerons and elevator - the same controls you use to fly - can keep the wind from getting under your wings and tail on the ground. You just have to point them the right way.

What Is the Climb-Into-It, Dive-Away-From-It Rule?

Say it out loud in the airplane until it’s automatic: climb into the wind, dive away from the wind.

Break the wind into two categories based on where it’s coming from relative to your nose. If it’s coming from ahead of the wingtip line, that’s a headwind component (a quartering headwind). If it’s coming from aft of the wingtip line, that’s a tailwind component (a quartering tailwind).

For wind coming from ahead of you, turn the yoke toward the wind - aileron up into the wind. That’s “climbing.” If the wind is off your left front, turn the wheel fully left so the left aileron rises. The raised aileron on the upwind wing keeps the wind from getting under that wing and lifting it. Keep the yoke neutral to slightly aft to hold weight where you want it.

For wind coming from behind you, turn the yoke away from the wind and push it forward. That’s “diving.” If the wind is off your left rear, turn the wheel right and push forward. A quartering tailwind is the dangerous one - it can get under the wing and the horizontal tail from behind and try to lift the tail and shove it around. Turning the aileron down on the upwind side and pushing the elevator forward presents the surfaces so the wind pushes them down, pinning the airplane to the ground.

How Do I Remember the Rule Without Picturing a Diagram?

The four-quadrant clock-face diagram in your training handbook is great for studying at the kitchen table, but it’s useless when you’re steering with your feet, watching for traffic, and listening to the tower. You won’t picture a diagram in the moment.

Instead, ask yourself two quick questions:

  1. Where is the wind coming from? If it’s trying to get under your upwind wing (it always is, a little), put the aileron up on that side - turn the wheel toward the wind. That handles every headwind case in one motion.
  2. Is the wind coming from behind me? If yes, protect the tail too: push the yoke forward, which flips your aileron to help hold things down and switches you to turning away from the wind.

If you remember nothing else: turn the wheel toward a wind ahead of you; push it forward and away for a wind behind you. The forward push for tailwinds is the part people forget, and it’s the most important, because the quartering tailwind is the one that bites.

How Do I Adjust Controls as I Taxi Through Turns?

Here’s a real scenario. You’ve landed at a towered field, cleared the runway, and the tower says taxi to parking. The wind is out of the west at 18, gusting to 26, and you’re taxiing generally eastbound to the ramp. With the wind from the west and you heading east, that wind is coming from directly behind you - a straight tailwind. That’s a dive-away situation: yoke forward.

But as you make turns through the taxiways, the wind shifts from behind you to beside you to in front of you depending on which way you’re pointed. This is not set-it-and-forget-it. Your control inputs have to change continuously, turn by turn.

On a windy day, your hand should work the yoke the entire taxi - rolling into the wind, rolling back out, pushing forward when you swing your tail into it. One hand flies the airplane on the ground the same as it flies in the air. You never stop flying; you’re just doing it at three knots.

What Are the Most Common Mistakes?

Mistake #1: Neutral controls the whole taxi. This is the pilot who learned the rule for the oral exam and then let it evaporate. Roughly 95% of the time nothing happens, which is exactly why it’s dangerous - it trains you to believe it doesn’t matter. Then one day a strong gust hits at the wrong angle and a wing comes up.

Mistake #2: Getting the tailwind backward. Many pilots nail the headwind case but freeze or turn the wrong way when the wind is behind them. Remember: quartering tailwind means turn away from where the wind is coming from and push forward. When in doubt, default to protecting the tail - push the yoke forward, because forward elevator holds the tail down, and the tail is the thing most likely to get lifted in a tailwind.

Does This Change for High-Wing, Low-Wing, and Tailwheel Airplanes?

The principle is identical across airplanes, but the stakes differ.

  • High-wing trainers (Cessna 172, 152) have a lot of wing area up high catching the wind, so aileron positioning is doing real work - this matters more for you.
  • Low-wing airplanes (Piper Cherokee, Warrior) have wings that are lower and a little less exposed, but don’t let that fool you into thinking you’re off the hook.
  • Tailwheel airplanes (Cub, Citabria, Champ) turn this from a nice-to-have into survival. All that side area and a light tail means they’ll weathervane and tip if you get lazy with the stick. Every good tailwheel instructor drills this until it’s reflex.

How Does This Connect to Takeoff and Landing?

This same thinking extends right into your takeoff roll and landing rollout. On a crosswind takeoff, you begin with full aileron into the wind, then gradually remove it as the ailerons become more effective, so you’re neutral about the time you rotate.

On landing, you reverse it: as you slow after touchdown, feed the aileron back in toward the wind - more and more - so by taxi speed you’re at full deflection into the wind again. It’s one continuous story: full deflection when slow, less as you speed up, back to full as you slow down. The taxi is just the bookends of the takeoff and the landing.

What Does the Checkride Examiner Look For?

The private pilot Airman Certification Standards (ACS) list “positioning the flight controls correctly for the existing wind conditions” as a skill element in the ground operations and the takeoff and landing tasks. The examiner is watching for it.

The moment you begin to taxi in any breeze, the examiner is watching your hands. Full aileron into the wind and the yoke moving appropriately as you turn tells them you understand the airplane is still an airplane on the ground. Dead-neutral controls in a 15-knot wind is the first thing they’ll write down. It’s a small thing that reveals a big thing about how you think.

Your Homework for the Next Windy Day

Before you release the brakes, check the windsock or pull the wind from ATIS. Say out loud where the wind is coming from, and set your controls for it right there at the run-up area.

Then, as you taxi, make it a game to reposition through every turn. Narrate it if you have to: “Wind’s behind me now - yoke forward. Wind’s off my left nose now, turning left - yoke coming back.” Do that for three or four windy flights and it stops being a thought and becomes a reflex in your hands. Reflex, not recall - that’s the goal.
