A steep turn on the private pilot checkride is a level, 360-degree turn at a 45-degree bank, flown within 5 degrees of bank, 100 feet of altitude, 10 knots of airspeed, and rolled out within 10 degrees of your entry heading. Most students lose altitude at the steepest part of the turn because banking tilts lift sideways and the nose drops - the fix is to add smooth, progressive back pressure and, when you get low and overbanked, to shallow the bank before you pull. Get that order right and the maneuver stops fighting you.

What Does the ACS Actually Require for Steep Turns?

Here are the real numbers straight from the FAA’s Airman Certification Standards for the private pilot certificate, not the campfire version:

  • Bank angle: 45 degrees, held within ±5 degrees
  • Altitude: held within ±100 feet
  • Airspeed: held within ±10 knots
  • Rollout: on your entry heading within ±10 degrees

That’s the entire task, in either direction. It sounds simple when you read it out loud. The reason it isn’t comes down to two things that change the moment you roll past about 30 degrees of bank.

Why Do I Lose Altitude in a Steep Turn?

When you’re straight and level, your wings lift straight up and hold the airplane against gravity. When you bank, that lift tilts with the wings. Part of it now pulls you sideways - that’s what turns the airplane - which means less of your lift is pointing up. The steeper the bank, the more of it points sideways instead of up.

At 45 degrees of bank, you’ve given away a large share of the lift that was holding you in the sky. Do nothing and the nose drops and you descend. That altitude loss isn’t bad luck. It’s geometry.

To get the vertical lift back, you pull - add back pressure to increase the angle of attack, so the wings make more total lift and the “up” part again supports your weight. Because you’re pulling harder, you feel heavier. That’s load factor: at 45 degrees of bank in level flight, you and the airplane effectively weigh about 1.4 times normal. A 2,000-pound trainer becomes an effective 2,800-pound airplane. That’s why your body sinks into the seat.

The back pressure is not a set-and-forget input. Feed it in progressively as you roll in, and release it progressively as you roll out. Students who treat the yoke like a light switch balloon in the middle and dive out the bottom. Smooth in, smooth out.

What Is Overbanking Tendency and How Do I Fix It?

Once you’re established in the turn, the airplane wants to keep rolling into an even steeper bank on its own. The outside wing travels through the air faster than the inside wing because it’s on the outside of the circle and has farther to go. More speed means more lift on that outside wing, which rolls you deeper into the turn. Left alone, a 45-degree bank drifts toward 50, then 60.

The fix is to hold a touch of opposite aileron. In a left steep turn, you carry a little right aileron. It feels backwards - you’re turning left but holding right stick - but the bank is already set. The aileron’s only job now is to hold the bank exactly where you put it, not to keep turning.

How Do I Fly a Steep Turn Step by Step?

Here’s a flow you can actually fly:

  1. Pick a prominent reference on the horizon - a road, tower, or mountain you can find again after 360 degrees. Note your heading.
  2. Do a clearing turn. Always clear the area before a maneuver. The examiner is watching whether you do.
  3. Set entry altitude and airspeed - most trainers, around maneuvering speed or a little below, roughly 90 to 100 knots (check your handbook).
  4. Roll in smoothly and coordinated, aileron and rudder together.
  5. As the bank passes 30 degrees, start adding back pressure. Settle it right on 45 degrees.
  6. Add a little power - the increased angle of attack means more drag, so airspeed bleeds off without it. Think 100 to 150 RPM, or about an inch of manifold pressure. Small.
  7. Hold the touch of opposite aileron to keep the bank pinned.
  8. Lead the rollout, and mirror the entry coming out (below).

Where Should My Eyes Be During a Steep Turn?

Outside - about 90 percent outside, 10 percent inside for a quick scan. If your eyes are locked on the attitude indicator, you’ll fail this maneuver. A steep turn is too dynamic to fly off the instruments as a VFR student; by the time the altimeter tells you you’re low, you’ve been low for three seconds.

Fly the sight picture. Watch where the top of your glare shield or cowling sits against the horizon. In a stable 45-degree turn, that relationship is fixed. When the nose starts to drop below that picture, catch it with a little back pressure before the altimeter ever moves. When the nose rises above it, you’re ballooning - ease off. You fly the sight picture and confirm with a glance at the panel, not the other way around.

I’m Low and Overbanked - Why Doesn’t Pulling Fix It?

This is where most checkrides are won or lost. You’re 90 degrees into a left steep turn, you glance in, and you’re down 80 feet with the bank crept to 52 degrees. Instinct says pull harder to climb. So you pull - and the airplane just turns faster, the nose keeps sliding down, and the airspeed winds up.

Here’s why: when you’re overbanked, your lift is tilted far to the side, so pulling mostly just tightens the turn instead of raising the nose. The correct fix is to shallow the bank first - roll back to 45 degrees, or a hair less for a second - so some lift points back up where it belongs. Then the back pressure you’re already holding does its job and the nose comes up. Bank first, then the pull works.

The examiner isn’t just watching whether you bust 100 feet. They’re watching how you recognize and correct. Catching a deviation early and making a smooth, correct input looks far more competent than getting lucky and staying pinned with no idea why. Recognize, correct, smooth.

What Are the Most Common Steep Turn Mistakes?

  • Losing the reference point. Pick something tall and obvious, and lead the rollout - begin rolling out roughly 20 degrees of heading before your reference, because it takes time to come out of 45 degrees of bank.
  • Forgetting to remove power and back pressure on rollout. You added both going in; take them back out coming out, or you’ll shoot up through your entry altitude. Rollout is a mirror image of the entry.
  • Getting uncoordinated. Keep the ball centered with rudder. At a high bank angle with the airplane loaded up, an uncoordinated stall is the dangerous one. Coordination here is a safety item, not a style point.
  • Tension. The airplane doesn’t respond to a death grip - it responds to smooth, small, continuous pressures. Loosen your hand and breathe.

Why Steep Turns Matter Beyond the Checkride

The steep turn teaches skills you’ll use for your whole flying life: feeling load factor in your body, understanding that lift is finite and must be managed, and dividing your attention - mostly outside, quick scan inside. Those skills show up the day you make a tight turn back toward an airport, maneuver away from traffic, or have to reverse course in tight terrain.
