A steep turn is one of the first maneuvers on the private pilot checkride, requiring you to hold a 45-degree bank through at least 360 degrees of heading change while staying within tolerance on altitude, airspeed, and bank angle. The maneuver is hard because banking tilts your lift vector sideways, reducing the vertical lift that holds you up - so you must add real back pressure as you roll in, not after the altimeter starts dropping. Examiners aren’t looking for a frozen-perfect turn; they want a pilot who notices small deviations and corrects them smoothly and early.

What Does the ACS Require for Steep Turns?

The FAA’s Airman Certification Standards (ACS) for private pilot applicants asks you to establish a bank of approximately 45 degrees and hold the turn through at least 360 degrees of heading change.

Those are two different skills, and only one of them passes.

Why Are Steep Turns So Hard?

Once you understand the aerodynamics, the technique gets much simpler.

In straight-and-level flight, the lift from your wings points straight up, balancing gravity, which pulls straight down. But the moment you bank, that lift vector tilts with the airplane. Part of your lift now pulls sideways into the turn - which is what actually turns the airplane. That’s good.

The problem: the vertical component of lift just got smaller because you tilted the whole vector over. Gravity did not get smaller. It’s still pulling straight down at full strength.

So at 45 degrees of bank, if you do nothing, the airplane descends. Not because you made a mistake - because physics. You have less vertical lift holding up the same amount of airplane.

How Much Back Pressure Do Steep Turns Need?

The fix is back pressure. You pull to increase total lift, so that even after the vector tilts over, enough vertical component remains to hold your altitude.

At 45 degrees of bank, that’s a real pull - not a gentle nudge. In a Cessna 172 or Piper Cherokee, you may be pulling hard enough that you’d want to trim it off if the turn lasted longer. Students under-pull far more often than they over-pull, and that is the number one reason the altimeter slides down in a steep turn.

The key insight: the back pressure is part of the roll-in, not a reaction to it. Add it as you bank, not after you’ve already lost 50 feet and noticed. If you wait until the altimeter moves, you’re always behind the airplane. Roll in and add pressure at the same time - lead it.

How Do I Fly a Steep Turn Step by Step?

1. Clear the area. Do two clearing turns, or at minimum a solid look left, right, and ahead. A steep turn is fast and aggressive, and diving in without checking for traffic shows poor judgment on a maneuver meant to demonstrate good judgment. The examiner is watching for this.

2. Pick a reference. Find a landmark on the horizon or note your heading on the heading indicator. That’s your entry heading - the one you’ll roll out on 360 degrees later. Outside references (the sun, a distant mountain, a road) catch your rollout point faster than the instrument does.

3. Set entry airspeed. In most trainers, that’s around maneuvering speed - slow enough to be safe, fast enough to have energy. Check your airplane’s specific numbers.

4. Roll in smoothly. Coordinate aileron and rudder together. As the bank passes about 30 degrees, start feeding in back pressure. Keep rolling to 45. Trim if your instructor teaches it that way, though many examiners are happy to see you simply hold it.

5. Keep your eyes outside. This is the whole game.

Where Should I Look During a Steep Turn?

Outside, on the horizon. You’re watching the relationship between your glareshield, cowling, and the horizon line. That sight picture tells you pitch and bank at a glance.

Come inside only for a quick scan of the altimeter and airspeed - maybe once every few seconds - then get your eyes right back outside. Pilots who fail steep turns are almost always staring at the attitude indicator, chasing the little airplane, always a half-second behind. The real horizon updates instantly; the instrument lags your eyeballs.

How Do I Correct Altitude in a Steep Turn?

This is where the maneuver is won or lost.

If you’re low: The instinct is to pull back. But in a 45-degree bank, you’re not pulling toward the sky - you’re pulling toward the inside of the turn, because your lift is tilted. Pulling harder mostly tightens the turn and increases load factor while you keep descending and the g’s build.

The real fix when you’re low is to reduce the bank slightly - shallow out to maybe 40 degrees for a moment. That stands the lift vector back up, restores vertical lift, and the airplane climbs back toward altitude. Then roll back to 45. You’re trading a little bank for a little altitude, temporarily, then giving it back.

If you’re high: Steepen the bank a touch, or relax a hair of back pressure. Same logic in reverse.

The mental model: pitch and back pressure are your rough altitude control, but bank angle is your fine altitude trim. Low, shallow slightly. High, steepen slightly. Small inputs, constant adjustments - not big dramatic saves. If you’re making a big save, you already let it get away from you.

What Is the Overbanking Tendency?

Once you pass about 30 degrees of bank, the airplane wants to keep rolling steeper on its own.

Here’s why: in a turn, the outside wing travels a bigger circle than the inside wing, so it moves through the air faster. More speed means more lift on that outside wing, and that extra lift keeps trying to roll you steeper.

So in a steep turn, you often hold a little opposite (top) aileron to keep the bank from creeping past 45. It feels wrong - you’re turning left while holding a bit of right aileron - but it’s correct. Managing the overbanking tendency is part of the maneuver.

What About Rudder in a Steep Turn?

In a properly flown steep turn, you’re roughly coordinated and the ball stays near center.

The classic mistake is stepping on the bottom (inside) rudder to try to hold the nose up. Don’t. That skids the airplane, it’s uncoordinated, and in a steep turn with a high angle of attack, a skid is exactly the setup you don’t want. Hold your altitude with bank and pitch, not rudder. The examiner will notice a skidding steep turn - and so will your airplane if you push it far enough.

How Do I Roll Out on the Right Heading?

Pilots often nail the whole turn and then blow the heading, because rolling out of 45 degrees of bank takes a second or two.

Lead the rollout. A common rule of thumb: lead by about half your bank angle. For 45 degrees of bank, start rolling wings level about 20 degrees before your target heading.

As you roll out, release the back pressure smoothly - you no longer need the extra lift once the wings come level. Forget to release it and you’ll balloon up, climbing through your altitude at the very end. Roll out, ease off, and arrive back at your entry heading, entry altitude, and entry airspeed like nothing happened.

Do I Have to Do Steep Turns in Both Directions?

Yes. On the private checkride, you’ll typically do a steep turn in both directions. The examiner may have you roll directly from a left turn into a right turn, or reset and go the other way.

Almost everybody has a good side and a bad side. For most right-handed pilots, left turns feel natural and right turns feel awkward, because the sight picture differs and your hand is doing something less familiar. Find your bad side and fly it twice as much. The examiner doesn’t care which way is comfortable.

A Real Checkride Scenario

The examiner says, “Show me a steep turn to the left.” You’ve done your clearing turns. You roll in - 45 degrees, back pressure in, ball centered.

About 180 degrees around, you catch the altimeter reading 80 feet low. The panicked student pulls hard, skids the rudder, and busts it worse. But you know better: you shallow the bank a few degrees, feel the nose come up toward the horizon, gain your altitude back over a second or two, and smoothly roll back to 45. You lead your rollout by 20 degrees, ease off the pressure, and you’re back on heading, dead on altitude.

You never got close to the tolerance. That’s not luck - that’s understanding what the airplane is doing and correcting early. That’s exactly the pilot the examiner wants to sign off.

The Mindset That Passes

The steep turn is not a test of whether you can hold everything frozen for 360 degrees. Nobody does that. It’s a test of whether you can feel the airplane drifting and nudge it back before it becomes a problem. Small corrections, made early, made smoothly.

That’s the whole game for instrument flying, for landings, and for nearly everything else you’ll do in an airplane. The steep turn is just where an examiner can see it clearly.

Go practice at altitude - give yourself at least 1,500 feet above the ground, more is better - clear the area every single time, and fly a dozen in a row, left and right. Watch how much smoother the fourth one is than the first. Then keep going.
