Steep turns on the private pilot checkride require holding a 45-degree bank through a full 360-degree turn in each direction while staying within ±100 feet of altitude, ±10 knots of airspeed, ±5 degrees of bank, and rolling out within ±10 degrees of your entry heading. But the maneuver isn’t really testing whether you can bank the airplane - it’s testing whether you can divide your attention, hold a sight picture, and make tiny corrections before the airplane gets away from you. Master that, and the numbers take care of themselves.

What Are the ACS Standards for Steep Turns?

Under the FAA’s Airman Certification Standards (ACS), the private pilot steep turn is flown at 45 degrees of bank. You roll into the turn, hold that bank all the way around 360 degrees back to your starting heading, and then typically roll directly into a turn the other direction and repeat.

The tolerances the examiner is watching are tighter than most students realize:

  • Altitude: ±100 feet
  • Airspeed: ±10 knots
  • Bank: ±5 degrees
  • Rollout heading: ±10 degrees

That altitude number is the one that trips people up. 100 feet in either direction sounds generous on the ground. In a 45-degree bank, it is not - because the airplane is trying to leave that altitude the entire time, and it’s trying hard.

Why Does the Airplane Want to Lose Altitude in a Steep Turn?

In straight-and-level flight, your wings make lift straight up, fighting gravity one-to-one. The moment you bank, that lift vector tilts. Part of it now pulls you around the turn - which is what you want - but that means less lift points upward to hold your altitude.

At 45 degrees of bank, you need roughly 1.41 times the lift required in level flight just to maintain altitude. That’s about a 40 percent increase in load factor, and your body feels it: you’ll weigh about half again what you normally do in the seat. For many students, this is the first time they really feel G, and it can be disorienting the first few times.

That extra lift has to come from somewhere. You have two levers: angle of attack and airspeed. In a steep turn, you add angle of attack by pulling back, and you add a touch of power to keep airspeed from bleeding off while you do it.

How Do I Set Up and Enter a Steep Turn?

Follow this sequence every time:

  1. Clear the area - out loud. Do two clearing turns, or at minimum a hard look left, right, and above, and say it: “Clear left, clear right.” The examiner is looking for exactly this. If you dive into a maneuver without clearing, you’ve told them how you fly when nobody’s grading you.
  2. Pick a reference. Line up with a road, section line, or distant landmark so you know the heading to return to. If you have a heading bug, use it. Note the heading - say it aloud if it helps: “Coming back to two seven zero.”
  3. Roll in smoothly. You’re not yanking it over. Roll to 45 degrees at a steady, deliberate rate.
  4. Lead your inputs. As the bank passes about 30 degrees, start adding back pressure and a touch of power - as you go, not after you reach 45 degrees. The airplane starts losing lift the instant you bank, so your correction has to start with the bank, not lag behind it.

Should I Look Inside or Outside During Steep Turns?

Outside. The single most common mistake in a steep turn isn’t too much or too little bank - it’s the eyes. Students stare at the attitude indicator, chase that little airplane on the glass, and the whole maneuver falls apart.

Learn the sight picture: the specific relationship between the cowling or glareshield and the horizon line at 45 degrees of bank. Memorize it. That picture is your altitude hold - not the altimeter. The altimeter tells you what already happened; the sight picture tells you what’s about to happen.

Glance inside only to cross-check bank, airspeed, and altitude - a quick scan, then right back outside. You fly the picture.

How Do I Hold Altitude in a Steep Turn?

Here’s the counterintuitive part: you manage altitude with bank as much as with pitch.

  • If you start to climb, resist the instinct to push. Instead, steepen the bank slightly - this tilts more lift into the turn and less upward, and the nose settles.
  • If you start to descend, shallow the bank a couple of degrees and add a hair of back pressure to bring the nose up.

The goal is small corrections: a degree or two of bank, an ounce of pressure. You’re making constant, tiny inputs - not big dramatic saves. If you find yourself making a big save, it’s because you missed three small corrections before it. And if your bank is wandering from 40 to 50 and back while you chase altitude, the examiner sees a sloppy maneuver.

A note on trim (one CFI’s opinion - instructors argue about this): in many training airplanes, a touch of nose-up trim as you roll in helps hold the back pressure; take it out as you roll out. Others fly it untrimmed and just hold pressure. Either works. What doesn’t work is fighting a heavy yoke for 360 degrees and expecting to make fine corrections with a tired arm.

How Do I Roll Out on the Correct Heading?

The airplane keeps turning while you roll the wings level, so you must start your rollout before the nose reaches your heading. A good rule of thumb is to lead your rollout by about half your bank angle - for 45 degrees of bank, lead by roughly 20 degrees.

So if you entered on 270, begin rolling out around 250. As you do, release the back pressure and pull off the power you added, settling right back to level flight - on altitude, on heading, on speed. Then roll through level and into the turn the other direction.

Most pilots have a good side and a bad side. You’ll turn beautifully one way and fight it the other, and the examiner knows it. Practice your bad side twice as much until it feels the same as the good one.

What Happens If I Bust Altitude During the Maneuver?

Picture it: your first turn to the left is gorgeous - right on altitude, bank locked at 45. You roll out on heading, roll into the right turn, and halfway around you glance in and you’re 120 feet high. You’ve busted the standard.

You fix it. You don’t freeze, you don’t apologize, you don’t announce that you blew it. Shallow the bank a touch, ease the nose down, get back to altitude, and finish the maneuver like a professional.

The examiner isn’t grading a single instant - they’re grading whether you noticed and whether you corrected. A pilot who drifts high and drives it right back is showing exactly the skill the maneuver exists to test: recognition and correction. What fails you isn’t the deviation - it’s failing to manage it. This is true across the entire checkride. Every deviation you catch and fix is you making your own case as a safe pilot.

Common Steep Turn Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Eyes inside. Get them out to the horizon.
  2. Rushing the roll-in. Snap into the bank too fast and you’re behind on back pressure and power - you’ll lose 50 feet before you settle. Roll in smoothly and lead your inputs.
  3. Forgetting the power. Hold altitude with pitch alone and airspeed bleeds off, setting you up for an accelerated stall. Add power as you add bank.
  4. Fixating and forgetting to clear. You’re pointing the airplane at every direction of the compass. Keep looking for traffic the whole way around - that’s the real reason we clear.
  5. Letting a bad first turn poison the second. If the left turn was ugly, reset and fly the right one like it’s the only one that counts. Mental momentum is real.
