Slow flight is the maneuver that teaches you how an airplane feels and behaves at the edge of its normal flying envelope so you never stumble into an unintended stall. What Is Slow Flight and Why Does It Matter?

Most students misunderstand slow flight from day one. They treat it as a stall maneuver. It’s the opposite. Slow flight trains you to recognize and control the airplane right at the edge of the envelope so a stall never sneaks up on you.

Think about where you actually fly slow in the real world: short final, the base-to-final turn, a soft-field takeoff where you’re breaking ground as early as possible, and a go-around when you’ve just added full power at low airspeed with the nose rising. Every one of those is slow flight.

You’re not practicing this for fun at 3,000 feet over the practice area. You’re building a skill you’ll use 50 feet off the ground with your family in the back. That’s why the examiner cares.

What Changed in the 2016 ACS Slow Flight Standard?

For decades, slow flight was taught with the stall warning horn blaring continuously. The idea was to fly just above a stall, and the way you confirmed you were there was that the horn sounded the entire time.

In 2016, the FAA’s Airman Certification Standards (ACS) changed the target. The new standard asks you to fly at an airspeed where the stall warning does not activate - roughly 5 to 10 knots above the stall warning airspeed in most trainers. Instead of flying with the horn screaming, you fly just above it. Quiet and clean.

Why Should the Stall Horn Stay Quiet?

Flying around with the stall horn blaring teaches your brain the wrong lesson. Spend hours of training with that horn going off continuously while nothing bad ever happens, and your brain files the sound away as normal - background noise, wallpaper.

Then one day you’re heavy, on a hot day, turning base to final, and the horn goes off for real. If part of your brain says “that’s just slow flight, we do that all the time,” that’s exactly the moment that gets people killed.

The new standard keeps the stall warning meaningful. When you hear it, it means you’ve drifted too slow and need to act. The horn should be an alarm, not a lullaby.

How Do I Fly Slow Flight Step by Step?

Clear the area first. Do two clearing turns and look for traffic, because you’re about to be nose-high and slow with limited visibility over the cowling. Pick an altitude with room and a heading or a point on the horizon to hold.

Reduce power and configure as you slow. On a checkride, the examiner usually specifies a configuration - often landing configuration, meaning gear down if you fly a retractable and flaps as specified.

Trim, don’t muscle it. The most common mistake is holding the airplane in slow flight with brute force - arms locked, fighting the pitch. Instead, trim off the pressure until the airplane sits at your target airspeed with your hands relaxed. Slow flight done right feels almost calm. If you’re sweating and muscling the yoke, the examiner can see it.

Expect the airplane to feel different. Near your target airspeed just above the stall warning, the controls get mushy and slow to respond - there’s less air flowing over the surfaces. The nose is high and the sight picture is unfamiliar.

Remember: power controls altitude, pitch controls airspeed. You’ll be tempted to chase airspeed with pitch. Resist it. Add power to stop a descent; lower the nose slightly if you need speed.

How Important Is Rudder in Slow Flight?

Critical. At high angles of attack and low airspeed, the airplane wants to yaw, especially with power in - left-turning tendencies are strong here. Let the ball slide out of center while you’re this slow, and you’ve set up the exact recipe for a spin: uncoordinated, slow, high angle of attack.

Keep your feet alive and the ball centered with rudder. The examiner watches your feet as much as your hands and is looking for coordinated flight throughout.

What Are the Private Pilot ACS Slow Flight Tolerances?

On your private pilot checkride, these numbers are graded:

  • Altitude: ±100 feet
  • Heading: ±10 degrees
  • Airspeed: +10 knots, −0 knots (you may be a little fast, but never below the target)
  • Bank angle: ±10 degrees during turns

That airspeed tolerance trips people up, so say it again: +10 and −0. The FAA is telling you something - they’d rather you be a touch fast than one knot slow, because slow is the dangerous direction. If you’re going to miss, miss on the fast side.

The examiner wants to see that you can establish the configuration and airspeed smoothly, hold it, do it while dividing your attention (a turn or heading change while staying on altitude and coordinated), and - critically - recognize and correct any drift toward a stall.

How Do I Handle a Turn in Slow Flight Without Busting the Standard?

Picture the checkride: you’ve set up slow flight and it feels good. The examiner says, “Give me a turn to a heading of 270.” This is where students fall apart.

In a turn, some of your lift pulls you sideways instead of up, so you need more back pressure and a little more power to hold altitude. Students who forget this roll in, start to sink, pull to stop the sink, bleed off airspeed, trigger the stall horn, and bust the standard mid-ride.

Anticipate instead. As you roll into the turn, add a little power, add a little back pressure, and keep the ball centered with rudder. Keep breathing. The turn should be a non-event.

What Are the Most Common Slow Flight Mistakes?

Fixating on the airspeed indicator. Glue your eyes inside on one instrument and the heading and altitude drift without you noticing. Slow flight is a scan: look outside, check pitch against the horizon, glance in, come back out. The airplane tells you what it’s doing through feel and sight picture - trust it.

Muscling the yoke instead of trimming. Relaxed hands mean a trimmed airplane and a cleaner maneuver.

Rushing the recovery. Ending slow flight is graded too.

How Do I Recover From Slow Flight Correctly?

When the examiner says resume normal cruise, don’t shove the throttle in and yank the nose up. Add power smoothly to full or climb power, let the airplane accelerate, and retract flaps on schedule as speed builds - not all at once. Retrim as you speed up. Smooth and deliberate.

If you dump all the flaps at once while slow, you can lose the lift they were providing and settle - ugly at low altitude. Milk them up in stages.

Why Does Slow Flight Make You a Better Pilot?

Every landing you’ll ever make ends in slow flight. You come over the fence, reduce power, the nose rises in the flare, the airplane slows, the controls soften, and you manage airspeed and sink rate right down to the pavement.

The student who owns slow flight almost always has nicer landings, because they’ve learned to feel the airplane at the slow end and they’re not afraid of it. That fear is common - down there it feels like the airplane is on the edge of falling out of the sky. It isn’t. A well-flown airplane in slow flight is completely under control.

The maneuver teaches you the edges of the envelope in a safe place - up high, with an instructor - so that when you meet those edges down low and alone, they’re familiar instead of terrifying.

For your next flight, set up slow flight, trim it so your hands relax, fly it just above the stall warning with a quiet horn, and practice dividing your attention. Make turns, change headings, and feel how rudder demand shifts with power. Do that a few times and slow flight stops being the maneuver you barely passed and becomes the skill that quietly makes you safer on every approach.
