Slow flight is one of the most misunderstood maneuvers in primary training, and a 2017 change to the FAA Airman Certification Standards reset what it actually means. Under the current ACS, slow flight is performed at the onset of stall warning - not minimum controllable airspeed, and not through aerodynamic buffet. Every approach and landing you fly for the rest of your career is built on this skill.

What Did the FAA Change About Slow Flight?

The old Practical Test Standards defined slow flight in terms of minimum controllable airspeed. The goal was to get the airplane as slow as possible while maintaining controlled flight. Stall horn screaming, controls mushy, airplane wallowing - that was considered correct technique by many instructors and examiners of that era.

The ACS replaced the PTS and changed the definition deliberately. Slow flight is now flight at the airspeed where any further reduction in airspeed, or any increase in load factor, will produce a stall. The stall horn should be on. Buffet should not be present. If you’re buffeting, you’ve exceeded the standard.

Why Did the Standard Change?

Accident data drove the change. Loss-of-control accidents in the traffic pattern - stalls on base-to-final, stalls in the turn from final to the runway - kept occurring even when pilots had received standard training.

Safety researchers found a troubling pattern: pilots trained under the old standard had learned, through hundreds of repetitions, to tune out the stall horn. The horn came on during slow flight, stayed on, and nothing bad happened. The brain categorized it as ambient noise. When that same horn activated during a loaded base-to-final turn with airspeed bleeding off, the trained response simply wasn’t there.

The 2017 ACS change breaks that conditioning. At the onset of stall warning, the correct response is immediate and unambiguous. The horn is no longer background noise - it’s a precise signal you’ve practiced reading and managing.

How Do You Set Up the Maneuver?

Before slowing down, designate and commit to a specific altitude. Then complete two 90-degree clearing turns in opposite directions, or one 180-degree turn, scanning above, below, and to both sides. This is habit pattern - the examiner is watching for it.

Reduce power and raise the nose simultaneously to begin slowing while holding altitude. As you approach flap extension speed, introduce flaps incrementally. On a Cessna 172, the first notch goes in at or below 85 knots. Consult your aircraft’s POH and respect the white arc on the airspeed indicator.

Continue reducing airspeed and add power as needed to hold altitude. The nose will be noticeably high. Apply right rudder to counteract torque and P-factor, and stay coordinated throughout.

What Is the Target Airspeed?

When the stall horn begins to chirp, stop there. That sound is your target - not a warning that something went wrong. Stabilize at that airspeed, use power to hold altitude, and use control inputs to hold heading.

The ACS performance tolerances for slow flight are:

  • Altitude: ±100 feet
  • Heading: ±10 degrees
  • Airspeed: not more than 3 knots above the onset of stall warning speed
  • Bank angle in turns: not more than 30 degrees

These tolerances are tight, particularly altitude. The airplane wants to descend in slow flight. You may need significantly more power than you expect - on a 200-horsepower Piper Arrow with full flaps, you could need 70–80% power just to hold altitude.

What Are the Most Common Slow Flight Errors?

1. Flying into the buffet. This is the ghost of the old standard. Students wait for buffet as their cue and slow past the onset of stall warning before stabilizing. The horn is the maneuver. The buffet means you’ve gone further than the ACS requires.

2. Altitude loss. Slow flight requires substantially more power than cruise. Students are often surprised by the power required to hold altitude with full flaps at near-stall-warning airspeed.

3. Uncoordinated flight. Adverse yaw is amplified at slow speeds. Every aileron input increases drag on the lowered wing and wants to yaw the airplane in the wrong direction. The ball tells the truth - keep it centered with rudder. Students who have been loose with rudder throughout primary training get exposed here.

4. Rough control inputs. At slow flight speeds, pitch controls are sensitive and roll controls are sluggish. Aggressive bank corrections to fix a heading deviation can load the wing enough to cause a stall. All corrections are small and patient.

5. Skipping the clearing turns. The examiner is evaluating your habit patterns, not just your stick-and-rudder. Make clearing turns automatic on every entry.

How Does Slow Flight Connect to Every Landing You’ll Ever Make?

Slow flight isn’t a maneuver you park between checkrides. The entire back half of every traffic pattern - downwind to base, base to final, final to flare - is a version of slow flight. You are progressively reducing airspeed, introducing flaps, and managing power and pitch to control descent rate.

The pilot who genuinely understands slow flight flares better, because they know how the airplane feels right at the onset of stall warning. They fly more precise short-field approaches because they can hold a target speed without hunting for it. They’re more confident on a tight base-to-final because they know exactly where the edge is - and they know they’re not near it.

How Should You Prepare for the Checkride?

Pull the current ACS from faa.gov. Find Area of Operation Four, Task A: Slow Flight. Read the task description, objectives, and performance tolerances before you brief with your examiner. Know them well enough to recite the standard in the preflight briefing.

Then fly the maneuver. Fly it straight and level. Fly it in gentle turns. Fly it with different flap configurations and observe how the onset speed changes. Fly it in your specific airplane until the sound, the feel, and the required power setting are all familiar. The ACS can tell you the standard. Time in the airplane builds the skill.
