Slow Flight, the ACS Revision That Quietly Changed the Standard, and Why Students Keep Babysitting the Horn

The Airman Certification Standards (ACS), which replaced the Practical Test Standards starting in 2017, redefined slow flight in a way many instructors and students still haven’t fully absorbed. The maneuver is no longer about holding the stall warning horn at maximum volume. It’s about demonstrating that you understand the back side of the power curve and can maneuver safely within it.

What Did the ACS Actually Change About Slow Flight?

The old standard - taught for decades before the ACS - defined slow flight as minimum controllable airspeed, with the stall warning horn blaring continuously as proof you were in the right regime. It was uncomfortable by design. Flying with the horn screaming required precise pitch control and put you right on the edge of a stall.

The ACS task is called Maneuvering During Slow Flight. Its objective is to perform the maneuver at an airspeed where any further increase in angle of attack, increase in load factor, or reduction in power would result in a stall. That’s a different target. The horn may come on intermittently - or not at all - depending on your exact airspeed. What matters is whether you understand where you are in the envelope.

The revision was partly a safety decision. Drilling students to hold maximum stall horn volume created situations where one bad correction during a turn or configuration change could produce an actual stall. The new standard builds in a small but meaningful margin.

How Do You Set Up Slow Flight Correctly?

Start with clearing turns. Two 90-degree turns in opposite directions - or a single 180-degree turn if airspace is tight - clears traffic and shifts your focus from cruise flying to precision flying.

Then pull power back and extend flaps in stages. On most trainers, approach flaps are standard for this maneuver, though the ACS tasks you with performing it in various configurations, so practicing at different flap settings matters. Avoid dumping full flaps at once; the abrupt drag and pitch change can catch you off guard during setup.

As speed bleeds off, you’ll add more power than feels intuitive. That’s the back side of the power curve: the airplane is producing drag faster than it sheds speed, and maintaining altitude requires thrust rather than pitch. Power controls altitude. Pitch controls airspeed. That reversal is the core educational point of the maneuver.

For most private pilot applicants in a Cessna 172, target airspeed lands somewhere around 45–50 knots with flaps, depending on weight and configuration. The ACS tolerance is plus 10 knots, minus zero - you can be up to 10 knots fast, but you cannot drop below the target.

What Is the Examiner Actually Evaluating?

The examiner is not checking whether the stall warning horn is on or off. They’re evaluating whether you demonstrate understanding of the regime you’re operating in.

Expect questions during the maneuver itself. Why are you adding right rudder? Because propeller torque and P-factor at high angle of attack want to yaw the nose left. Why is your power this high? Because at this airspeed, on the back side of the power curve, more thrust is required just to hold altitude. That kind of verbal awareness is what separates a pilot who has memorized a procedure from one who understands the airplane.

The full tolerance picture: altitude within 100 feet, heading within 10 degrees, airspeed at or above target, coordinated flight, and proper configuration management throughout entry and recovery.

Your scan matters too. Eyes fixed on the airspeed indicator will cost you altitude or heading. Eyes outside give you pitch attitude and bank from the horizon; instruments confirm the numbers. Slow flight is a dual-scan exercise.

The Five Most Common Slow Flight Mistakes

1. Using pitch to fix altitude. In slow flight, pitch controls airspeed. A descent gets corrected with power, not back pressure. Pulling back to recover altitude just slows the airplane further and increases stall risk.

2. Forgetting the rudder. At high angles of attack and low airspeeds, torque and P-factor create significant yaw. Feet that aren’t actively working produce subtle coordination errors the examiner will see.

3. Flying too fast. The upper tolerance is 10 knots. Students who are nervous tend to pad their speed for comfort. Flying near the top of the tolerance isn’t wrong, but it should be deliberate - not a sign that you’re avoiding the actual slow flight regime.

4. Halfhearted clearing turns. A clearing turn is a real maneuver with intent. A lazy head swivel in each direction doesn’t qualify.

5. Going silent. The oral portion of the checkride doesn’t end when the engine starts. If an examiner asks what you’re doing and your answer is “just holding it here,” you’ve missed the evaluation.

How Do You Recover from Slow Flight Correctly?

Recovery sequence matters. Advance the throttle, establish a climb attitude, then retract flaps in stages as airspeed builds. This is the same sequence used after every landing - power, attitude, flaps in stages.

Retracting all flaps at once at slow speed creates a sudden loss of lift that demonstrates exactly the kind of control knowledge problem the ACS is designed to catch. The sequence should be automatic before your checkride.

How to Practice Before Your Checkride

Practice at multiple flap settings. No flaps is harder; full flaps changes both the stall speed and the drag picture. Get comfortable across a range of configurations, not just the one airspeed you’ve done twenty times.

Practice slow flight turns specifically. Thirty degrees of bank, coordinated, altitude within 100 feet. This is where students lose the most checkride points. The coordination demand in a banked turn at slow flight speeds is where foot skill becomes critical - and where an under-practiced student can quickly find themselves near an accelerated stall.

Drill the recovery until it requires no active thought. The checkride is not the moment to be thinking through the sequence.
