For the private pilot ACS, in slow flight you’re expected to maintain:

  • Airspeed: +10 / −0 knots
  • Bank angle: ±10 degrees in turns

Read that airspeed tolerance again: plus ten, minus zero. It’s not symmetrical. You’re allowed to be a little fast, but not a single knot slow - because slow, in this maneuver, means into the stall. The FAA built the buffer into the number. Respect it.

What Are the Most Common Slow Flight Mistakes?

Mistake one: the feet fall asleep. Going slow with added power stacks up left-turning tendency. The nose yaws left, and if your feet aren’t alive on the rudder, the ball slides out and you’re one aggressive aileron input from a wing dropping. Coordinated slow flight is right-rudder slow flight. Mistake three: flying the old maneuver by accident. Pilots taught by old-school instructors slow until the horn blares and just leave it there. On today’s checkride, that’s a deviation. The pilot who busts it rolls in thinking about the heading, forgets the extra back pressure, drops the nose, and loses eighty feet. Startled, they yank back, load the wing, and the horn screams. More startled, they add aileron to fix the bank - now the airplane is uncoordinated and slow with a wing dropping, and the examiner is reaching for the controls. The whole chain took about four seconds.

The pilot who passes hears the instruction and pauses half a beat. How Does Slow Flight Apply to Real Flying?

Every landing you’ve ever made ended in slow flight. That flare - holding the airplane off the runway as the nose comes up and airspeed bleeds away - is flight at minimum controllable airspeed with the ground three feet under your wheels.

The go-around, when you firewall the throttle in a dirty airplane and fly it slow and coordinated while you clean up and climb, is slow flight with terrain around. The soft-field takeoff, lifting off before the airplane is really ready and holding it in ground effect, is slow flight too.

The examiner isn’t checking whether you can perform a stunt. They’re checking whether you’ll survive a botched landing.
