With no radio contact possible, he navigated by dead reckoning - using the angle of the Pacific sun to hold his heading and his knowledge of island geography to track his position over featureless water. Monocular dead reckoning. For roughly five hours.
At some point during the flight he spotted a group of Japanese aircraft heading toward Guadalcanal and tried to join them, hoping for an escort home. His radio was dead. He couldn’t make them understand. He fell away from the formation and continued alone.

Landing with One Eye: The Approach into Rabaul
With the loss of his right eye, Sakai had no binocular depth perception. Estimating altitude above the runway, reading the sink rate, timing the flare - all of it had to be accomplished using monocular cues: the size of objects on the runway surface, the parallax shift as the aircraft moved through the approach and round-out.
He came in too fast. He misjudged the flare. The Zero bounced hard off the runway, went back into the air, and settled again. It rolled to a stop.
Ground crews running toward the aircraft found Sakai slumped forward in the cockpit, barely conscious, his right eye destroyed, his uniform soaked with blood. They assumed he was dead. He was not.
He was rushed to surgery. Doctors removed bone and shell fragments from his skull and from the tissue around the destroyed eye. They told him he would never fly again.
