The FAA’s annual AirVenture NOTAM, which runs 32 pages this year, defines a VFR arrival that begins at the town of Ripon, Wisconsin, and funnels every arriving aircraft up a set of railroad tracks to a point called Fisk. For roughly a week each summer, this stretch becomes the busiest airspace on the planet, and it rewards pilots who can fly numbers precisely and follow instructions exactly.

How does the Fisk arrival into Oshkosh actually work?

You start by finding Ripon. From there, you follow the railroad tracks northeast - literally track the rails - all the way to Fisk.

You monitor the frequency and listen. When a controller sees your airplane and wants you, they’ll say something like, “Cessna on the tracks, high wing, rock your wings.”

Your answer is to rock your wings - waggle the ailerons left, right, left. That tells the controller: yes, that’s me, I hear you, I understand. No radio call. Just rock your wings.

If you get overwhelmed, lose the airplane ahead of you, or blow through your altitude, there’s an answer in the NOTAM: break it off.

Fly clear of the arrival, climb out of the flow, and regroup - divert to Fond du Lac and try again if you need to. There’s no shame in breaking off. The shame is in pressing on after you’ve lost the picture. A good pilot knows the difference.

How should I prepare before launch?
