Training spends enormous time on the whiz wheel and fuel-burn calculations, and treats the actual checkpoints as an afterthought. You draw the line, find a couple of towns near it, circle them, and move on. That’s backwards.

Your navigation is only ever as good as your checkpoints. You can compute a beautiful heading, correct perfectly for wind, and it means nothing if you can’t look outside and confirm you’re where the math says you are.

A river running parallel to your course instantly reveals whether you’ve drifted left or right. A highway crossing your course at a right angle tells you exactly when you’ve reached a certain point.

The best feature of all is one that crosses your track, because crossing it is an unmistakable event with a built-in timestamp. You were on one side; now you’re on the other.

How Far Apart Should Checkpoints Be?

What Do I Do When a Checkpoint Isn’t There?

Picture it: you’re 20 minutes into a leg. Your first two checkpoints came right on time, right on course. Then you reach where your third checkpoint should be, and it’s just not there. You’re looking for a town at a highway junction, and all you see is farmland.

Here’s the trap: the temptation is to start turning - it must be over there - and chase the ground. That’s exactly how a small uncertainty becomes a big one. You start maneuvering on a guess and corrupt the one thing that was still reliable: your heading.

Don’t turn yet. Do this instead:

Fly the airplane and hold your heading. Note the time. Your first tool is the clock, not the yoke. If your first two checkpoints were dead on and you’ve been holding heading, odds are excellent you’re very close to on course, and the checkpoint is just hard to see, or you’re a minute early or late. Widen your scan. Students fixate straight down, but a landmark ahead and to the side is still a landmark. Look to the horizon. Where’s that distinctive backup lake relative to where it should be?
