Most accidents aren’t caused by one dramatic failure - they happen when several small, survivable risks stack on top of one another until the pilot is airborne with no good way out. Running PAVE at the kitchen table, before the engine ever starts, drags all four of those quiet pressures into daylight so you can see the whole stack and take it apart while every option is still on the table.

What Does PAVE Stand For?

PAVE is a risk-management tool built by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and lives in the Airman Certification Standards (ACS) under risk management. Each letter represents a category of risk:

  • P - Pilot
  • A - Aircraft
  • V - enVironment
  • E - External pressures

Your examiner will ask about it on the checkride, but the real payoff is on the ordinary Friday nights when you’re deciding whether tomorrow’s flight is a good idea. PAVE doesn’t make the go or no-go decision for you - it simply makes the stack of risk visible so you can decide honestly.

To see how the four letters work together, follow one real scenario throughout: a newly certificated pilot with about 80 hours total who wanted to fly his family roughly 200 nautical miles to see the fall color - one fuel stop, back before dark. Nothing was obviously wrong, but something felt wrong, and he couldn’t name it. PAVE is how you name it.

P - How Do I Honestly Assess Myself as the Pilot?

This is the letter pilots skip. We inspect the fuel, oil, and tires and never spend one honest second inspecting ourselves.

The FAA gives you a second checklist to run on yourself here, and it spells IMSAFE:

  • I - Illness
  • M - Medication
  • S - Stress
  • A - Alcohol
  • F - Fatigue
  • E - Emotion

Run it slowly. Are you fighting a head cold that will keep your ears from clearing on descent? Did you take something last night - even over-the-counter - that’s still in your bloodstream? Did you have a fight this morning? When did you last actually sleep eight hours, not just lie in bed for eight?

For our example pilot, the P item was real. At 80 hours total, he’d flown only about four hours in the last 90 days, had never flown this route, and had never landed at the destination. He wasn’t unsafe - he was rusty and newer than the flight he was planning.

Currency and proficiency are two different things. The regulation requires three takeoffs and landings in the last 90 days to carry passengers, but meeting that minimum doesn’t mean you’re sharp. Only you can tell the difference, and only at the kitchen table.

A - Is the Aircraft Actually Up to This Specific Flight?

The question isn’t just “is it airworthy on paper.” It’s whether the machine is up to this mission.

How much fuel does it really carry with these seats full? What’s the useful load once you add four adults and a weekend of bags? Did you actually run the weight and balance, or eyeball it and figure it’s probably fine? Probably fine is not a number.

Think about equipment, too - the second radio, the working autopilot, the up-to-date database you’d want in demanding terrain or weather.

Our pilot was flying a Cessna 172, plenty of airplane for the trip. But with four people and full fuel, it would sit right at its maximum gross weight. On a cool morning at a sea-level field, that’s no problem. The destination, though, was up in the hills, and the afternoon was forecast to warm up - which is where the next letter takes over.

V - What’s in the enVironment Beyond the Weather?

The capital V sits in the middle of the word because that’s where it earns its keep. Environment is weather, but it’s much more: terrain, airport elevation, runway length, obstacles off the end, day versus night, and the density altitude that can turn a fully loaded 172 from a decent climber into something that barely staggers off the pavement.

Take the weather piece first, because that’s the one that kills people. Picture the classic trap: you’re a VFR-only pilot with no instrument rating, and a cloud layer is forecast to move in during the afternoon. The morning is severe clear, so you tell yourself you’ll get up early and beat it home.

Here’s the problem - you’ve now planned a flight whose entire safety depends on the weather cooperating with your schedule. You’ve handed the go or no-go decision to a weather system that has never heard of you.

For our pilot, the environment stacked up quietly: higher terrain at the destination, a warm afternoon driving density altitude up right as he’d try to depart at max gross, and an afternoon cloud layer arriving right as he’d head home in an airplane with no legal or safe way through it. Any one of those is manageable alone. The danger is how they lean on each other.

E - Why Are External Pressures the Most Dangerous Letter?

E - External pressures isn’t about the airplane or the sky at all. It’s everything pulling on you to go when you should stay: the family already in the car, the hotel already paid for, the Monday meeting you can’t miss, the wedding, the simple fact that you told everyone you’re a pilot now and driving would feel embarrassing.

The old nickname is get-there-itis. The FAA’s term is plan continuation bias, and it’s a stone-cold killer. It’s why a pilot who’d never take off into a thunderstorm from home will fly into one trying to get home. The pressure to complete the mission quietly rewrites what you’re willing to accept - and you won’t feel it happening. It doesn’t feel like poor judgment in the moment. It feels like determination.

Our pilot had external pressure written all over the trip and didn’t recognize it. His kids were excited. He’d promised them and talked about the flight for two weeks. His family thought of him as “the pilot” now. That unnamed itch that made him call? That was external pressure whispering in one ear while his gut whispered a warning in the other. He was smart enough to hear the second voice; many pilots only hear the first.

How Do I Put the Whole PAVE Stack Together?

This is what scenario-based decision making actually looks like - not one dramatic moment, but you, on the ground, looking at the whole stack while every option is still available.

  • Pilot: ~80 hours, low recent time, an unfamiliar route into an airport he’d never seen.
  • Aircraft: a capable Cessna 172, loaded right to its weight limit.
  • enVironment: higher terrain, a warming afternoon pushing up density altitude, and an afternoon cloud layer closing in as he’d want to return - in a VFR-only airplane.
  • External: a promised trip, excited kids, and an identity as the family pilot, all pushing toward yes.

Not one of those items is a no-go by itself. Pilots fly at max gross, into unfamiliar airports, and around afternoon weather every day. But stack all four on one flight flown by a rusty 80-hour pilot, and it’s not four small risks - it’s one big risk wearing a disguise.

PAVE’s beauty is that it doesn’t decide for you. It just makes the stack visible, out on the kitchen table, in daylight, with no engine running and nobody rushing you.

How Do You Take the Stack Apart Instead of Canceling?

Here’s the part worth remembering: our pilot didn’t cancel. He changed the flight until the stack came apart.

  1. He moved the trip to the next morning, when the forecast was clear all day - killing the environment problem and the external pressure to beat the weather home.
  2. He left two seats empty and sent one child up by car with grandma, putting the 172 well under gross and solving the density-altitude problem.
  3. He brought an instructor along in the right seat, handling the unfamiliar-airport and low-proficiency pilot item.

Four risks, four fixes - every one made on the ground, for free, with a coffee in hand. You are never more powerful than in the moment before you decide to go. On the ground you have every option; once you’re airborne and boxed in, your options shrink by the minute.

What Should I Actually Do Before My Next Flight?

Run PAVE out loud the night before, even for a lap around the pattern:

  • Pilot: Am I actually up for this?
  • Aircraft: Is the machine up for this - with real numbers?
  • enVironment: Are the sky, the terrain, and the field up for this?
  • External: Be brutally honest - what is pushing me to go, and would I still go if that push weren’t there?

That last question is the whole ballgame. Would I still make this flight if nobody was waiting on me? If the answer is no, you just found the real reason you were going - and that reason has never once kept an airplane in the air.

Examiners are testing exactly this. Hand a scenario, they don’t want a weather recital; they want to hear you sort the risks, see the stack, and talk through taking it apart. Running PAVE out loud shows them the one thing they’re really testing: judgment.
