A spin recovery in most training airplanes follows four steps, remembered by the acronym PARE: Power to idle, Ailerons neutral, Rudder full opposite, Elevator forward. But a spin is really two problems stacked together - a stalled wing and autorotation - and you have to break both, in the right order, or the airplane keeps spinning. The most important skill isn’t recovery at all; it’s prevention through coordinated flight, keeping the ball centered so the airplane is far harder to spin in the first place.

What Is a Spin, and Why Won’t It Just Stop?

A spin is not one problem. It’s two problems layered on top of each other, and fixing only one of them leaves the airplane still spinning.

The first problem is that the wing is stalled - both wings, actually, but one is stalled more deeply than the other. The second problem is autorotation, the airplane rotating around its own vertical axis.

The stall is what lets the spin start. The autorotation is what keeps it going. You have to break both, and you have to break them in the correct sequence, or you make the situation worse.

How Do You End Up in a Spin in the First Place?

Nobody plans to spin a trainer on a routine flight. It sneaks up on you during a normal approach.

Picture yourself on downwind, then base, then turning final. You’re a little high, or the wind pushed you wide, and you don’t want to overshoot the runway centerline. You were correctly taught not to bank steeply down low - so instead of adding bank, you press a little bottom rudder to tighten the turn. You skid it around.

Here’s the part you can’t see. That bottom rudder yaws the nose. The outside (high) wing speeds up and makes more lift, while the inside wing slows down. You also have back pressure in to hold the nose up, so you’re already flying slow, close to the stall.

The slower inside wing stalls first. When one wing stalls and the other is still flying, the airplane rolls hard toward the dead wing, the nose drops and swings, and now you’re spinning - down low, on the turn from base to final.

This is the classic killer, the base-to-final skid stall spin. It has taken good pilots who did almost everything right except for one uncoordinated moment at the worst possible altitude. That’s why coordinated flight - keeping the ball centered - is the single most important spin-prevention habit you have.

What Does PARE Stand For in Spin Recovery?

Once prevention has failed and you’re in the spin, PARE is the recovery flow that works for the vast majority of training airplanes - the Cessna 172, the Piper, and other types certified for it.

Always check your specific airplane’s flight manual, because the manufacturer’s procedure is the final word. But for a huge number of general aviation airplanes, the manufacturer’s procedure and PARE line up almost word for word. The order of the steps is not an accident - the order is the whole point.

P - Power to Idle

Bring the throttle all the way back to idle, first.

Engine power works against you in a spin. Propeller blast over the tail and gyroscopic effects from the spinning propeller can flatten the spin, speed it up, and make recovery harder. Pulling power to idle takes that energy out of the fight. Throttle back, then hands off the power.

A - Ailerons Neutral

Put the ailerons neutral and centered. This is the step your body will fight hardest.

When the airplane rolls into the spin, every instinct screams to pick that wing up with aileron. Do not. Adding aileron against the spin drops the aileron on the down-going wing, which increases that wing’s angle of attack, stalls it harder, and can worsen or flatten the spin. Let go of the fight and center the ailerons. This is the step that separates pilots who understand spins from those who just memorized four letters.

R - Rudder Full Opposite

Apply full rudder opposite the direction of the spin, and hold it.

The practical challenge is knowing which way you’re spinning when the ground is a blur and your inner ear is lying to you. Two reliable methods:

  • Look at the turn coordinator - the little airplane symbol deflects in the direction of the spin.
  • Look outside and step on the rudder that opposes the rotation. If the world is spinning left, push right rudder.

Use full deflection and hold it. This is the step that actually stops the rotation, so give it a moment to work.

E - Elevator Forward

After the opposite rudder is in, move the elevator briskly forward toward neutral to break the stall.

This isn’t a violent shove - it’s a positive, brisk forward movement that reduces the angle of attack and unstalls the wing. This step fixes the first problem: the stall.

The sequence is critical. Rudder first to stop the rotation, then elevator to break the stall. If you push the elevator forward before the rudder is in, you can actually accelerate the spin on the way down. Stop the spin, then unstall.

How Do You Recover From the Dive After the Spin Stops?

Once rotation stops and the wing is flying again, neutralize the rudder so you don’t yaw the other way. Now you’re in a steep, nose-low dive, pointed at the ground and gaining speed fast - and you are not done.

The spin recovery becomes a dive recovery, and this is where pilots break airplanes. Ease out of the dive smoothly, with steady back pressure, watching your airspeed.

If you haul back on the yoke at high speed, you can exceed the airplane’s structural limits or snap it into a secondary stall. Instead, level the wings, ease the nose up to the horizon, and add power back once you’re flying again. Smooth and deliberate - you didn’t survive the spin to bend the airplane in the pullout.

The full flow in one breath: Power idle. Ailerons neutral. Rudder full opposite, hold it. Elevator forward to break the stall. Rotation stops, neutralize the rudder, and ease out of the dive.

Do Private Pilots Have to Demonstrate a Spin?

No. If you’re training for your private certificate, you are not required to demonstrate a full spin.

The Airman Certification Standards for the private pilot require you to recognize and recover from an impending stall and a full stall, and to understand the aerodynamics of how a spin develops. The full, developed spin as a required maneuver lives at the flight instructor level. Many private pilots complete their entire training without ever seeing the ground come around the windshield.

There’s a real trade-off here. Spin training done badly - in the wrong airplane or with the wrong instructor - carries its own risks. But nothing removes the fear of a spin like doing a few with a good instructor in an airplane certified and rigged for it. The first one is terrifying; by the fourth you’re grinning, and you understand in your body what your brain only sort of believed before.

Should You Seek Out Spin Training Anyway?

Yes - find an instructor who teaches upset and spin training in a proper airplane, such as a Cessna Aerobat or a Decathlon, and do a session.

Not because you plan to spin your Cessna on the way to breakfast, but because the day the airplane surprises you, you want your hands to already know the answer.

And notice what the examiner is really testing, even at the private level: it isn’t spin recovery, it’s spin avoidance. Whether you keep the ball centered in a steep turn. Whether you recognize the buffet, the mush, and the sloppy controls before the wing lets go. Whether, when you’re distracted by traffic on final and getting slow, some part of you is still flying coordinated. Prevention is the exam. Recovery is the insurance policy.

The Scenario That Should Stick

You’re turning base to final and you overshoot the centerline a little. Every fiber of you wants to tighten the turn with rudder and hold the nose up with back pressure. That is the exact recipe for a skid stall spin.

Instead, do the boring, safe thing. Keep the turn coordinated, ball in the center. If you’re going to overshoot, overshoot - then go around. A go-around costs you five minutes and a little pride. The skid stall spin costs you everything, and it happens too low to recover anyway.

The recovery is four letters and a few hundred feet. The prevention is one habit, built one coordinated turn at a time, so it’s there when you’re not thinking about it.
