On the night of May 16–17, 1943, the Royal Air Force’s No. 617 Squadron attacked the great masonry dams of Germany’s Ruhr valley in Operation Chastise, using a revolutionary skipping weapon designed by engineer Barnes Wallis. Nineteen Lancaster bombers flew at treetop height to drop backspinning cylindrical bombs that bounced across the reservoirs, over the German torpedo nets, and sank against the dam walls before detonating. Two major dams - the Möhne and the Eder - were breached, but the raid cost eight aircraft and 53 lives, and the damage was repaired within months.

What Was Operation Chastise?

Operation Chastise was a precision bombing raid aimed at the reservoirs that powered German heavy industry. The Ruhr valley ran on water - water for the foundries, for hydroelectric power, and for the canals that moved coal and steel. The large reservoirs behind the region’s masonry dams were, in effect, the beating heart of the German war economy.

Barnes Wallis reasoned that breaching those dams would do more than cause damage. It would cut off the water supply, flood the valleys, wash out rail lines and power stations, and set the entire industrial region back on its heels.

The men who flew the raid earned a nickname that followed them for the rest of their lives: the Dambusters.

Why Couldn’t an Ordinary Bomb Break a Dam?

A dam wall of that scale was almost impossible to destroy with conventional bombing. The walls were enormous and curved to drive the water’s force down into bedrock. A bomb dropped from altitude would miss, strike the top, or merely chip the face.

The Germans also understood the value of their dams. They strung heavy steel torpedo nets across the water in front of each wall, hanging deep to stop any underwater weapon. A torpedo would simply tangle in the netting and explode harmlessly, well short of the dam.

How Did the Bouncing Bomb Work?

Barnes Wallis’s key insight was that water does not compress. A charge detonated directly against the dam’s upstream face, underwater, would channel the full force of the blast into the wall instead of dissipating it in every direction. At the right size and depth, it could crack the masonry and let the weight of the reservoir finish the breach.

The problem was getting a bomb to sit flush against the wall, at the correct depth, with a steel net in the way. Wallis’s answer was to make it skip. Experimenting in his own garden with marbles, a tub of water, and an elastic slingshot, he found that a spinning object launched at the right speed and height would bounce across water - and ride straight over a submerged net.

The resulting weapon was codenamed Upkeep: a steel cylinder packed with explosive, weighing roughly 9,000 pounds. Before release, a belt drive in the bomber’s belly spun it backward to about 500 revolutions per minute.

That backspin was the genius of the design. Dropped correctly, the cylinder skipped up the reservoir, hopped the torpedo nets, and - on losing its energy at the wall - used its backspin to grab the masonry and crawl downward, hugging the upstream face. A hydrostatic (pressure) fuze then fired it at a depth of about 30 feet. The water did the rest.

How Did the Crews Hit the Target at Night?

Wallis’s numbers were brutally exact. To make the skip work, crews had to release the weapon at precisely 232 miles per hour, flying exactly 60 feet above the water - at night, over black, mirror-flat surfaces that offered no depth perception, in a heavy Lancaster never designed to be flown that low.

Two pieces of low-tech ingenuity made it possible:

  • The spotlight height gauge. Two lamps were mounted on the Lancaster’s belly, one forward and one aft, angled so their beams converged into a single point on the water only when the aircraft was exactly 60 feet up. When the two pools of light merged into a figure eight beneath the wing, the crew was on height.
  • The plywood range sight. On the Möhne and other dams, two towers stood a known distance apart on top of the wall. Crews built a handheld sight - a piece of plywood with a peep hole and two nails. When the nails lined up with the towers, the bomb aimer pressed the button.

To prepare, 617 Squadron was formed in secret in March 1943 at Scampton in Lincolnshire, drawing experienced crews from Bomber Command. Their commander, Guy Gibson, was just 24 years old and had already flown roughly 170 operations. For weeks the crews weren’t even told the target - they simply drilled low flying over the reservoirs of England and Wales until aircraft came home carrying tree branches and the smell of scorched paint.

What Happened on the Night of the Raid?

Nineteen Lancasters took off from Scampton in three waves and flew low the entire route - down on the deck across the North Sea and over the occupied Netherlands, hedgehopping under the radar and weaving around known flak batteries.

It went wrong almost immediately. One aircraft struck the sea and tore off its weapon; another hit power lines; others were caught by flak crossing the coast. Men died before they ever reached a dam.

The main force, led by Gibson, made for the Möhne, the largest and most important target. Gibson attacked first. His Upkeep skipped true and threw up a tower of white water a thousand feet high - but the dam held. It took repeated runs, with Gibson flying alongside later attackers to draw German fire onto himself and off the man making the drop. On one of those runs, a bomber was hit, caught fire, and crashed beyond the dam with its entire crew lost.

On the fourth run, the wall finally moved. A breach opened in the center of the Möhne dam, and millions of tons of water burst into the valley, sweeping away power stations, bridges, and roads for miles.

Gibson then led the aircraft that still carried weapons to the Eder dam, hidden in a valley so steep and twisting the Germans had left it undefended. The approach forced crews to dive over a hilltop castle, level off at 60 feet, release, and firewall the throttles to climb clear of the mountain at the far end. After several failed passes, the Eder breached too, sending a second flood down a second valley.

Was Operation Chastise Worth the Cost?

The human cost was staggering. Of the 19 Lancasters that set out, eight did not return. 53 of the 133 men who flew were killed - nearly half - and three more were captured. Few raids in the war carried a casualty rate like it.

The strategic results were more mixed than the legend suggests. The floods were real and dramatic, killing well over 1,000 people on the ground - a cruel number of them foreign prisoners and forced laborers held in valley camps. The Germans were shocked, but they rebuilt the Möhne dam by the autumn of 1943, pulling thousands of workers off the Atlantic Wall fortifications to do it. The dams were flowing again within months.

So the raid did not win the war. What it did prove was that a handful of aircraft, flown with extraordinary skill, could hit a target everyone said was impossible. It lifted British morale at a low moment and forced Germany to divert labor and defenses to protect its dams for the rest of the war.

Guy Gibson received the Victoria Cross for the raid. He was killed on another operation in 1944, still only 26 years old. Barnes Wallis, by many accounts, was haunted by the losses - the quiet engineer who had dreamed up the weapon with a slingshot and marbles reportedly wept when he learned how many men had not come home, saying that had he known the cost, he never would have begun.

Beneath every clever trick - the bouncing bomb, the converging spotlights, the plywood sight - was a young crewman holding a four-engine bomber 60 feet above black water while gunners fired up at him, doing it because the man ahead of him had, and the man behind him was watching.
