What Were the Dambusters Trying to Do?
By 1943, RAF Bomber Command had spent years hammering German industry with slow, costly results. The heart of that industry was the Ruhr Valley - steel, coal, and factories running around the clock. All of it depended on water, held back by large masonry dams up in the hills.
Barnes Wallis, a quiet and stubborn engineer, believed that cracking those dams would flood the valley, wreck the factories, and cut off the water and hydroelectric power the German war machine relied on. The problem was that you cannot simply bomb a dam.
A dam is a wall of stone and concrete roughly 130 feet thick at its base. A bomb striking the top does little. A bomb landing in the water nearby only makes a splash, because water absorbs the blast. How Did the Bouncing Bomb Work?
The Germans knew the dams mattered, so they strung heavy torpedo nets across the water in front of them. A torpedo would snag on the nets and detonate short. Wallis needed a way over those nets.

What if a bomb could skip across the surface of the lake, clear the torpedo nets, strike the face of the dam, and then roll straight down the wall to the correct depth before exploding? Why Was It So Hard to Fly?

And it had to release the weapon at exactly the right distance from the dam. Get any one of those wrong, at night, over water, under fire, and the attempt was wasted.
Flying at 60 feet is demanding even in daylight over a runway with a radar altimeter. These crews did it at night, over glassy black water, using 1943 instruments. Over smooth water in the dark, a pilot cannot judge height - there is no texture or shadow to reference, and aircrew have flown perfectly good aircraft straight into calm water because their eyes told them they were higher than they were.
The solution was not electronics but ingenuity. Crews mounted two spotlights under each aircraft, one in the nose and one in the belly, angled so their beams met in a single spot on the water at exactly 60 feet. Too high, and the pilot saw two separate pools of light; too low, and they crossed. When the two circles slid together into a figure eight, the aircraft was dead on altitude, and the navigator called out corrections from the blister.
For range to the dam, the fix was even simpler: a small handheld Y-shaped plywood triangle with a nail at each tip. Who Flew the Raid?
The RAF stood up a brand-new unit, No. 617 Squadron, and picked its crews from the best in Bomber Command. To lead it, they chose Guy Gibson, just 24 years old, who had already flown roughly 170 operations in both bombers and night fighters - a hard, driven young man with far more mileage than his years.
The crews trained for weeks without knowing their target, flying low again and again across the lakes and reservoirs of England until 60-foot flight became muscle memory. Most learned what they were attacking only at the final briefing.

Some made four or five attempts just to line up. The Eder broke as well. A third target, the Sorpe Dam, was of earthen construction and took a pounding but held.
What Did It Cost, and Did It Matter?
A good history tells the whole ledger. Of the 19 Lancasters that set out, 8 did not return, and 53 of the young airmen were killed - out of 133 who flew. On the ground, the floods killed well over 1,000 people, many of them not German but prisoners and forced laborers held in a camp below the Möhne.
Strategically, the raid did not win the war. The Germans were resourceful and had the Möhne patched and pumping water again by the autumn of 1943. The dams did not stay down.
Yet the Dambusters are remembered more than eighty years on because the raid demonstrated what a determined mind and a brave crew can accomplish when they refuse to accept that something is impossible - a quiet engineer flicking marbles across a tub, a gunsight cut from plywood, two spotlights merged into one to fly at 60 feet in the dark.
