Note the word: personal minimums, not legal minimums. The regulations give you legal VFR weather minimums - in much airspace that’s 3 miles visibility and specific cloud clearances. Those are floors set for the entire national airspace system. They are not a recommendation for you, tonight, in your airplane, with your currency.

Build a personal minimums sheet and write it down. As a low-time VFR pilot, you might decide you won’t launch cross-country if any of these is true along your route:

  • Visibility is forecast below 6 miles
  • It will be night over unlit terrain
  • The forecast trend at your destination is worsening
