What Are the Exceptions That Trip Pilots Up?
The basic rule is easy. The exceptions are where pilots actually get bitten.
1. It’s course, not heading. On a windy day these can be very different. If you’re pointed mostly north to hold your track against a big crosswind but your actual course over the ground is easterly, you go by the course - the line on the chart - not where the nose is pointed to fight the wind.
2. Direction picks odd or even; weather picks which one. Don’t select an altitude just because it gave you a nice tailwind or kept you under a cloud deck and then forget to make it legal for your direction. The direction decides odd or even. 3. The 3,000 feet is AGL, not MSL. Near a flat coast, 3,000 AGL and 3,000 MSL are nearly identical. But out west over high desert or mountains, the ground might already sit at 7,000 or 8,000 feet MSL - so you could be at 10,500 indicated and still be less than 3,000 feet above the terrain, meaning the rule isn’t technically required yet. Most pilots out west fly the correct cruising altitude anyway once at cruise, because it keeps them predictable.
4. The rule quits at 18,000 feet. At 18,000 and above you’re in Class Alpha airspace, everyone is IFR, and controllers assign altitudes. A different rule handles separation up there.
5. It’s a VFR rule. When you file IFR and ATC assigns you an altitude, you fly what you’re told - even if it doesn’t match east-odd, west-even. Center might have you eastbound at 8,000, and that’s fine, because they own the separation. The hemispheric rule is your fallback when nobody is assigning you an altitude.
How Do I Apply This on a Real Cross-Country?
Say you’re flying 140 miles due west, magnetic course 270°. You check the winds aloft and find a good push at 6,000 and an even better one at 8,000; the terrain, freezing level, and cloud bases all check out. West is even, so your menu is 4,500, 6,500, or 8,500. You take 8,500, ride the tailwind, and you’re legal and separated the whole way.
Here’s the part people forget: the trip home is a new decision. Same route reversed makes your magnetic course 090°, due east - and east is odd. Every altitude that was legal outbound is now wrong. You cannot come home at 8,500; you’d want 7,500 or 9,500.
