On September 3, 1951, Armstrong was running a low, fast attack on a heavily defended target in a valley - right where the ground fire lives. The North Koreans had strung steel anti-aircraft cables high across the narrow valleys, invisible until you were on top of them.

His Panther hit one. The cable sheared off several feet of the right wing. An airplane missing that much wing wants to roll over and quit, but Armstrong fought it, climbed out of the valley, and nursed the crippled jet toward friendly territory.

With the controls half gone, he made the call to leave it. He got himself over a survivable spot and ejected. He was 21 years old - and he lived to fly again.

That steadiness is the thread that runs through the whole story. He didn’t panic in the valley, under the canopy, or later a quarter-million miles from home. The calm was earned, one terrifying mission at a time.

Armstrong as an X-15 test pilot

After the war, Armstrong became a research pilot for the organization that would become NASA, flying at Edwards Air Force Base in the high desert during the golden age of test flying - the era Tom Wolfe later chronicled in The Right Stuff.

The crown jewel was the X-15, a black rocket plane with stubby wings. It didn’t take off from a runway. A B-52 carried it aloft to about 45,000 feet and dropped it, and the pilot lit the rocket motor - a shove that changes your definition of fast, climbing nearly straight up to where the sky turns black in daytime and you can see the curve of the Earth.

Armstrong flew the X-15 seven times. He took it above 207,000 feet - almost 40 miles straight up - and pushed it to nearly Mach 6, six times the speed of sound.

On one famous flight he was so high and fast that when he tried to turn back toward base, the air was too thin for the wings to bite. He ballooned back up, skipped across the top of the atmosphere like a stone across a pond, and sailed clear past Edwards before he could get down into thick enough air to turn around - calm the whole way.

Gemini 8: the first docking and a spinning spacecraft

By the time NASA went looking for men to fly to the moon, they weren’t after movie stars. They wanted pilots who could stay ice cold when the machine went wrong - because machines go wrong.

In March 1966, Armstrong commanded Gemini 8 with David Scott. Their job was to dock two vehicles nose to nose in orbit - the maneuver that makes a moon mission possible. They pulled it off: the first docking in the history of spaceflight.

Then a thruster stuck open. The whole stack began to roll, slow at first, then faster. Undocking made it worse, spinning the lighter spacecraft up to about one revolution per second - fast enough to blur a man’s vision and threaten blackout.

Armstrong shut down the entire main control system, switched to the re-entry control thrusters - the backup set meant only for coming home - and stopped the tumble by hand. He wrestled the spacecraft back to steady flight with his fingertips, the same way he’d wrestled the broken Panther out of that Korean valley fifteen years earlier.

Why the Apollo 11 moon landing was a flying achievement

The lunar landing on July 20, 1969 was neither automatic nor smooth. As the lunar module Eagle, carrying Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, descended, the computer began throwing program alarms - numbers nobody in the cockpit had memorized. For a few awful seconds, a wave-off was on the table before the ground called to press on.

Then Armstrong looked out the window and saw the computer flying them straight into a field of boulders - a crater rimmed with rocks the size of automobiles. No place to set down.

So he took over. He took manual control, tilted the lander forward to hold his speed, and flew across the surface of the moon hunting for a smooth spot while the fuel gauge fell. Houston called it out: 60 seconds, then 30 seconds of fuel before they’d have to abort or crash.

Armstrong kept flying, kicking up moon dust as he got low, and eased Eagle onto a patch of the Sea of Tranquility he picked with his own eyes. Contact light. Engine stop. “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.”

That last minute - alarms howling, boulders rising, fuel running dry - wasn’t when Armstrong learned to stay calm. He already knew. He learned it soloing an Aeronca at sixteen, in a Panther with half a wing gone, in a rocket plane at the edge of the atmosphere, and in a spacecraft tumbling in the dark. The moon was just the last runway - the hardest one, but the man who flew there was, first and always, an aviator.
