Maneuvering during slow flight is one of the most commonly failed tasks on the private pilot checkride, and since 2016 the standard for flying it has fundamentally changed. Under the current Airman Certification Standards (ACS), you fly slow flight just above the speed where the stall warning activates - not with the horn blaring, as pilots were taught for decades. If the stall warning is sounding during slow flight today, you are doing it wrong.

What Changed in the 2016 ACS?

For decades, slow flight was taught at minimum controllable airspeed - power back, nose high, flaps in, slowed until the stall warning horn came on, and then held right there on the ragged edge. You’d make turns, climb, descend, and hold heading and altitude with the horn howling the entire time. That was the checkride standard under the old Practical Test Standards (PTS).

The problem was subtle but serious: we were spending hours deliberately teaching brand-new pilots to ignore the stall warning horn. The one piece of equipment whose entire job is to say “you are about to stop flying” was being treated as normal background noise.

Then those same pilots would fly a real traffic pattern - hot day, a little heavy, turning base to final - hear that horn, and their trained response was “that’s fine, that’s just slow flight.” Except now they were 300 feet off the ground and in a bank.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) kept documenting the same accident: loss of control, stall-spin in the pattern, current pilots flown into the ground. The FAA and the training community eventually asked whether the training itself had built that habit.

So when the FAA rolled out the ACS in 2016, replacing the PTS, they rewrote the slow flight task. It was essentially one line, but it flipped the maneuver on its head.

What Does the Current Slow Flight Standard Actually Require?

The current standard has you fly at a speed where any further increase in angle of attack, increase in load factor, or reduction in power would result in a stall warning. Read that carefully: a stall warning, not a stall.

In plain terms, you fly just above the speed where the horn comes on. If the horn is sounding, you are too slow. The examiner wants to see you find that speed, hold it, and maneuver there without setting off the warning.

The philosophy shifted from “live inside the stall warning” to “the stall warning is a line you respect and stay on the correct side of.” The value of knowing what the airplane feels like at the very edge still exists - but that now lives in the stalls task, where the whole point is to reach the warning and beyond, then recover. For slow flight, the message is precision, not bravado.

How Do I Fly Slow Flight to the Current Standard?

Step 1 - Clearing turns. Before you slow down, look for traffic. Two clearing turns, roughly 90 degrees each. Say it out loud: “clear left, clear right.” It costs nothing and tells the examiner you think about the aircraft around you.

Step 2 - Configuration. Bring the power back to roughly 1,500 to 1,700 RPM, depending on your airplane. As the airspeed bleeds into the white arc, add flaps in stages - 10 degrees, 20 degrees, full. The most common point-loser here: forgetting to trim. As the nose rises and speed decays, you’re holding heavy back pressure. Trim it off so the airplane helps you hold the attitude and your scan doesn’t fall apart.

Step 3 - Find the onset. Slow down until you hear the very first chirp of the stall warning, then gently add a touch of power and lower the nose a hair to make it stop. A useful technique: note the picture and airspeed at the chirp, then add about 100 RPM and settle there. That small cushion keeps you from tripping the horn when you load the wing in a turn.

Step 4 - Maneuver. Now hold that speed while the examiner asks for turns, climbs, descents, and heading changes. On the private pilot ACS, the tolerances are ±100 feet on altitude, ±10 degrees on heading, and ±10 knots on airspeed - and you may not bust the low side of that speed and set off the warning.

Why Does Power Control Altitude in Slow Flight?

This is the single most important lesson in low-speed flying: down here, power controls altitude and pitch controls airspeed.

In your first lessons, someone told you the yoke makes you go up and down and the throttle makes you go fast and slow. In cruise, that shortcut is fine. On the back side of the power curve, it will kill you. If you’re sinking and you pull back to climb, you don’t climb - you slow down, move closer to the stall, and sink faster.

So when you descend below altitude in slow flight, you add a little power and hold the nose attitude steady, and the airplane climbs back. Want to speed up? Lower the nose slightly and add power to hold altitude. Everything is smooth, everything is small. Slow flight is a maneuver of tiny, patient corrections.

A Real Checkride Scenario

Warm afternoon, a little bumpy. You’re in slow flight and the examiner says: standard rate turn to the left, roll out on a heading of north. As you add bank, you add load factor. The wing needs more lift, the airplane wants to sink and slow, and right on cue the horn chirps.

The pre-2016 response was to hold it there. The current standard treats that chirp as a bust waiting to happen. So you add a little power to arrest the sink, relax a hair of back pressure to keep the speed from decaying, and fly out of it. The horn goes quiet, you finish the turn.

That recovery - answering the warning with power and a relaxed nose instead of pulling harder - is exactly the muscle memory the standard is building. It’s the same input that saves your life turning base to final on a gusty day. We’re not teaching a maneuver; we’re teaching a reflex.

What Are the Most Common Slow Flight Mistakes?

1. Letting the horn sing. A blaring horn during slow flight today isn’t a demonstration of skill - it’s a demonstration that you didn’t read the current ACS. If your instructor trained before 2016, you may have caught this habit from them.

2. Fixating on the airspeed indicator. Students stare at the dial and forget the picture and the altitude. Slow flight is flown mostly by attitude, sound, and feel. Set the nose picture, hold it, and glance at the instruments to confirm - not the other way around.

3. Chasing altitude with pitch. Sink, pull, get slower, sink more. Break this habit in the practice area where it’s safe, so you never carry it into the pattern.

4. Cleaning up wrong. When told to resume cruise, add power first, let the airplane accelerate, then milk the flaps up in stages as speed builds. Dumping all the flaps at once at low speed produces a sink that drops everyone’s stomach.

5. Not knowing why. If the examiner asks why we practice slow flight and you say “because it’s on the test,” that’s a weak answer. The strong one: takeoff and landing are slow flight. Every approach you’ll ever fly is a slow flight maneuver. The practice area just gives you a couple thousand feet to learn it instead of 200.
