Eight years before Lindbergh, John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown crossed the Atlantic non-stop in an open-cockpit biplane - and most people have never heard their names.
On June 15, 1919, John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown completed the first non-stop transatlantic flight, crossing 1,900 miles of open ocean from Newfoundland to Ireland in 16 hours and 27 minutes. They flew an open-cockpit Vickers Vimy biplane with no functioning radio, survived a near-fatal spiral dive in the dark, and landed nose-first in an Irish bog. Charles Lindbergh’s celebrated crossing came eight years later.
The Prize That Started It All
The London Daily Mail first offered £10,000 - roughly half a million pounds in today’s terms - for the first non-stop transatlantic crossing by aeroplane in 1913. The war intervened. When the armistice was signed in November 1918, the prize returned, and a generation of pilots who had learned to fly for survival suddenly had somewhere to point that skill.
Several teams converged on Newfoundland in the spring of 1919. Harry Hawker and Kenneth Mackenzie-Grieve attempted it first in May, flying a Sopwith aircraft. Their engine overheated over the mid-Atlantic. They ditched, were recovered by a Danish steamer, and the world believed them dead for seven days before news of their survival arrived. John Alcock was 26 years old at the time of the crossing. A Royal Naval Air Service veteran, he had been flying since 1912 - an extraordinary amount of experience for the era. He was shot down over Turkey in 1917 during a bombing mission and spent two years as a prisoner of war. He was the instinctive pilot of the pair: stick-and-rudder, fast-reacting, built for the unexpected.
Arthur Whitten Brown was 32. A Royal Flying Corps observer and navigator, he had also been captured during the war and walked with a permanent limp from his wounds. Where Alcock flew by instinct, Brown worked by method. A natural mathematician, he could run spherical trigonometry with frozen hands in a bouncing cockpit and still arrive at an answer worth trusting.
The Aircraft: A Bomber Turned Record-Setter
The Vickers Vimy was designed as a strategic bomber - intended, if the war had continued, to strike Berlin. It never flew that mission. Instead it became the aircraft that opened the Atlantic.
Its specifications were unambiguous about what it was: a 68-foot wingspan, two open cockpits, and two Rolls-Royce Eagle engines producing approximately 360 horsepower each. Heavy, honest, and aerodynamically straightforward. The bomb bay was stripped out and replaced with fuel tanks. Fully loaded for the transatlantic attempt, the aircraft weighed close to 13,000 pounds carrying 865 gallons of petrol.
Finding a usable runway in Newfoundland in 1919 required six weeks of work. Alcock and Brown’s team graded rough ground near Lester’s Field outside St. John’s, filling soft spots with gravel and flattening uneven patches. Six weeks of preparation for sixteen hours of flying.
The Crossing: What the Night Actually Looked Like
They departed on the afternoon of June 14, 1919, Alcock in the left seat, Brown beside him. They had sandwiches, coffee in flasks, electrically heated flying suits, a sextant, celestial tables, and charts. They also had a radio.
Within the first hour, the radio failed. A wind-driven vane powering the transmitter was damaged in the slipstream. From that point forward they were silent. No one could hear them. If they went into the ocean, the world would know what they were attempting - not what had happened.
The first hours were clear enough for Brown to shoot the sun with the sextant and work out their position. When darkness came, he switched to stars. The bubble sextant had to be held level while measuring star altitude in turbulence, with barely enough cockpit light to read the tables.
Sometime around 2:00 a.m., they flew into cloud.
The Spiral Dive
Any pilot current on instruments already knows what comes next when you describe an open cockpit, no reliable attitude reference, and solid cloud at night. Spatial disorientation. The inner ear reports wings level while the aircraft turns. The body cannot distinguish gravity from centrifugal force in a sustained bank.
The Vimy entered an uncontrolled spiral dive. Alcock could not see the wings or the horizon. The airspeed was building. The altimeter was unwinding. They punched out the bottom of the cloud still turning and diving, with the surface of the North Atlantic immediately below them.
Alcock recovered level flight with approximately 50 feet of clearance over the water.
He climbed back into the cloud and they continued east.
Brown on the Nacelle: Six Times in the Dark
The icing began shortly after. Ice was building on the air intake scoops of the Rolls-Royce engines, choking airflow and causing the engines to surge. Losing one engine over the mid-Atlantic in 1919 was serious. Losing both was something else entirely.
Brown climbed out of the cockpit.
He went out into the slipstream - at altitude, in freezing air, at close to 100 miles per hour - worked his way along the exterior of the fuselage to the engine nacelles, and chipped the ice from the intake scoops with a knife. Then he climbed back in.
He did this six times before dawn.
On one of those trips he lost his footing. He grabbed a fuel gauge pipe protruding through the wing surface, held on, found his balance, and continued. At some point in the night a cockpit instrument cracked from the cold. Brown leaned over to read it in the dark and felt something warm on his hand. Blood - the cracked glass had opened his palm. He wrapped it with part of his scarf and went back to the navigation tables.
Ireland and the Bog
Dawn arrived around 4:00 a.m. at that latitude in June. After roughly 15 hours of cloud, spatial disorientation, icing, and a near-fatal dive, they had fuel remaining and a course that, if Brown’s calculations were correct, pointed directly at Ireland.
The coast of County Galway appeared out of the morning haze.
Alcock spotted what looked like a flat, open green field near Clifden and set up an approach. From altitude, it appeared ideal. What neither man knew until the wheels touched was that it was Derrigimlagh Bog.
The wheels sank immediately into the peat. The tail came up, the nose went down, and the Vimy buried its nose in the bog and stopped, balanced on its bent propeller tips with the tail in the air. Alcock and Brown climbed out. Brown had bruised ribs. That was the worst of it.
Sixteen hours and twenty-seven minutes. 1,900 miles. Non-stop. The first crossing of the North Atlantic by aeroplane.
The Aftermath
The news traveled by telegraph within hours. Winston Churchill, then Secretary of State for Air, presented the £10,000 Daily Mail prize in person. King George V knighted both men within weeks - Sir John Alcock and Sir Arthur Whitten Brown.
The Vickers Vimy went on to anchor further long-distance records. That same year, Ross and Keith Smith flew one from England to Australia. In 1920, Pierre Van Ryneveld and Quintin Brand flew one from England to South Africa. The bomber built to end a war it never fought in became the aircraft that demonstrated what aviation could connect.
On December 18, 1919 - six months after the Atlantic crossing - John Alcock was delivering a Vickers Viking amphibious aircraft to the Paris Aero Show. He flew into fog over Normandy, lost control, and died. He was 27 years old.
Brown attended the funeral. He never flew again. He moved into engineering, married, and lived quietly in Wales. He died in October 1948, having outlived his partner by nearly 29 years.
Why This Flight Matters More Than It Gets Credit For
Lindbergh’s 1927 crossing - New York to Paris, 33.5 hours, solo - is one of the most celebrated events in aviation history. The Spirit of St. Louis hangs in the Smithsonian. None of that recognition is misplaced. What Lindbergh did was extraordinary.
But Alcock and Brown crossed the same ocean eight years earlier, in an open cockpit, with a radio that failed in the first hour, no usable attitude reference in cloud, an aircraft with no autopilot, engines that iced in the dark, and a navigator who went out on the fuselage six times with a knife to keep them running. Lindbergh flew an enclosed cockpit with a Wright Whirlwind engine specifically chosen for its resistance to icing - and flew it across eight years of improved aircraft design.
What Alcock and Brown did in June 1919 was at the absolute outer edge of what was technically possible. The margin between completing that crossing and disappearing into the North Atlantic was, on at least one occasion, 50 feet.
There is a white stone cairn at Derrigimlagh Bog today, visible from a bog road outside Clifden, with a clear view of the Atlantic on a calm day. It is not a heavily visited monument.
